Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988
“Just Got Paid” is a 1988 single by Bahamian R&B singer–songwriter Johnny Kemp (August 2, 1959 – April 16, 2015).
The song started as an instrumental track by Teddy Riley for which Keith Sweat wrote lyrics. Sweat ultimately passed on the song that was originally written for his 1987 debut Make It Last Forever. Kemp recorded a demo of the new song, intending for it to be used by another singer; his “scratch vocal” ended up on the final release.
The song hit No. 1 on the U.S. R&B and Dance charts and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Just Got Paid” received a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Song at the 31st Grammy Awards in 1989. It lost out to Anita Baker’s “Giving You the Best That I Got”.

Hi all, loving Pauls fantastic rips, he’s done some pretty rare stuff over the years that can’t be found anywhere else, like Boy Meets Girl’s first single from April 1985. Sorry if I’ve missed something, hoping it is not to do with my asperger’s. I’ve read the FAQ and have contacted Paul a few times, but have never heard back. There is about half a dozen very, very rare mostly Australian 7 inches I would love him to rip. Aside from offering the funds for either purchasing the records, or paying to get the records sent off, we’ve never been able to… Read more »
Hi, Mark Chris
I try to answer emails but to be honest, I get a lot of them so I do miss some from time to time. Please send me another email with Aussie on the subject. Thanks
Yes! Very familiar with this one… and I can see it being in need of a new transfer. Terrific grooves to this, Johnny Kemp (R.I.P.) came along at just the right time. Thank you Paul for another great week! Have a great weekend, you too Jeff, Song and Dance, Fred, Martika and anyone else I left out!
You’re very welcome, Retro Hound 🙂
Thank you for the restoration on this one, I’m guessing Teddy Riley tracks are a lot of work to de-click!
But despite being an 80s teen, I don’t think I ever heard this one before. So I checked the Billboard chart for August 13, 1988, and there it was at #10.
At the time, I knew all the other songs in the top 20 but this one. Maybe they just didn’t play it in Northern California? Weird. Anyway – thanks again!
You’re welcome 🙂
Oh my gosh. I had forgotten about this song! What a gem – thank you Paul for sharing it. LOVE it. Have a wonderful weekend!
You’re welcome, MusicMan3. Have a great weekend 🙂
Thanks for the great post, Paul! This was the jam back in the day! The Dub is/was always great and I was always amazed that Teddy didn’t do more with the club/extended version. Heck, if people want a (better?) remix of this (using only the tracks from this release) I’ll make one! Just let me know in the comments. Have a great weekend everyone and thanks again, Paul!
You’re welcome. Had a feeling you would show up for this one, Fred. I hope you have a great weekend 🙂
Hey Fred, thanks for the offer. As I love to edit or recreate remixes myself I´d appreciate if you gifted us with one of yours. 🙂
Have a great weekend.

Oh My Gosh, Fred!!
Love seeing you pop up here!! To me, you are phenomenal with your “”phono-graphic” memory and your knowledge of great mixes!! PLEASE!! Do a mix!! I and the rest would flip for it!
Have a great day and weekend!! And show up more…PLEASE!!
Jeff
Not familiar with it, but I love that those were his “scratch vocal”?!? Some people just ooze talent! He sounds like the perfect mix between Michael Jackson and Terence Trent D’Arby!
I agree with your observation, Martika. I hope you enjoy this one. Have a nice weekend 🙂
Great song, Paul. I love it. I have that one in a horribly ugly uk sleeve. Another great one of his few singles is “Birthday Suit” which maybe we will find here one day… 😉
Have a great weekend. You too, dear Jeff, and everyone around.
At least you got a picture sleeve the US did not. I don’t think I have “Birthday Suit” but I will check 🙂 Have a nic e weekend.
If I knew this info I forgot! Thanks! Explains so much about this track for me! I was big into funk and r&b at this time and lived all the duo producers from Jam & Lewis, LA & Babyface, and Teddy Riley & Gene Griffin. Of course, Teddy left Gene in the dust …
Saw Keith Sweat on that tour !
Thanks! Great start to the weekend & a mini-vaca!
You’re welcome, ING. I hope you have a great weekend 🙂
Such a cool song to start the weekend!!!! Paul, it’s been a fun week here at Burning The Ground, especially for you bringing “Tough Guys Don’t Dance” single to light. So awesome!!
Have a great, well-deserved weekend, Paul!! And weekend well-wishes to you, Song And Dance, Retro Hound (thanks for suggesting the After The Fire single to Paul!!), Fred, ING, Daniel, Martika and all the rest!! Party hard folks!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff. Have a great weekend 🙂
Thanks Jeff, have a great weekend. Something tells me you’ll be grooving to The Hood…
You are so right, Retro Hound!!
Have a terrific weekend!!
Jeff
