Jody Watley With Eric B. & Rakim – Friends (“Unity” Remix) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

Jody Watley’s “Friends” was the first crossover hit to introduce and pair the custom and specialized 16 bar verse with a rapper and singer. The formula became such a popular and successful formula in music that The Grammy’s added the “Rap/Sung” Category in 2002.

This 12″ contains remixes by C.J Mackintosh & Dave Dorrell. These mixes are exclusive to this 12″ and did not appear on any other 12″ releas. Released as the second single from the album Larger Than Life “Friends” peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Great to see these vinyl-only UK remixes. The Unity mix kills the standard US mixes and has some well placed “Friends” samples. I can remember hearing this on one of the syndicated radio mixshows at the time and spent 2 months hunting down the import. Shame it was never released on CD but great to have it cleaned up here! Also makes me remember the Macintosh/Dorrell import mixes of Janet Jackson’s Escapade and Alright.

I should be ecstatic for this ‘post’
Unfortunatly
I somehow got ‘blocked’ on JW’s youtube channel
my only crime [i can think of] was to say
it was ‘nice’ to see her ‘Jody’ singles ‘Listed’
with all her other releases on ‘Discogs’
I mean i still remember the 2 BBC Radio 1 Dj’s
who to get the truth ala Shalamar was to get it
”Straight from the Horses’ mouth”
‘A very attractive filly @ least” was there
Ad-lib which only dug a deeper hole
I never said anything like that LOL
