First of all, thank you very much for the work you put into both “Alright” 12″ maxi discs. Since I’ve owned these discs ever since, but haven’t gotten around to digitizing them, I’m very grateful. The following versions weren’t released on CD: Alright (A Cappella) 3:28 Alright (Hip House Dub) 6:36 This one was even released exclusively on the US 12″ you posted: Alright (12″ R&B Edit) 7:18 Alright (12″ House Edit) 7:12 The others, however, were only released on rare promo CDs or in Japan. In total, there are about 30 versions, most of which were released in 1990.… Read more »

Awesome double feature, Paul. Not only is Alright one of my favourite songs by Ms Jackson, the R&B edit is one of my favourite remixes of any JJ song. What a way to send us off into Easter weekend.
Happy Easter everybody! 🙂

I’d like to add folks that the Ultimix mix of Alright is awesome. They implemented multiple mixes as well as some nice samples, stutter effects, and good breaks. Check it out if you’ve never heard it.

Ah! That was my first guess! Thanks for letting me know! Can’t wait to listen and compare!
The marketing for this seems like it was just geared toward collectors! Why so many variations??? The manufacturing alone makes no sense! 😆

The reason for so many variations is that the Label(s) want to reach as wide an audience as possible with mega artists like JJ so the Labels can make as much money as possible. In this case, they create mixes WITHOUT rapping so it appeals more to the CHR radio stations which gear their music more to the “older” crowd of say over 40 as well as their station likely refuses to play ANY kind of rap music/music with raps. Lots and lots and lots of mainstream radio artists songs that have raps have the rap portions removed so CHR… Read more »

Oh no, I totally know/ get that. I just don’t get why they just didn’t have one promo CD with all the choices together for whatever format to choose from. And the acapellas not on CD is an odd choice. Maybe the vinyl might be more complicated time wise, 80 minute max vs 23 per side or whatever, but manufacturing a single promo CD vs many variants seems simpler. For instance, in my collection I have a promo CD for Escapade, it has 4 different 7” remix edits, 2 12” remixes and 2 dubs. All one one CD. Then I… Read more »

I think the reasons vary: 1)Manufacturing 100-1000 copies of a single cd for these Labels is like $0.25 to $1.00 so it costs so little in the grand scheme of things to make various Promo cds and distribute them in any haphazard way they wish. 2)Likely the mixes don’t all get produced exactly at once by the remixer. It could simply be a week or 2 later. Especially the ones where/if the Label later asks for a rap to be removed. When I was in a record pool, it was quite often I would get a 12″ promo and then… Read more »

Makes sense. In always thought it was funny how many promos went straight home from the record store with whoever was the “biggest fan.” I actually had the A& M rep bribing me the Janet stuff, CDs, posters, etc. I even have Randy (Jackson) & The Gypsy’s promos! That went nowhere but was actually pretty good!

And there are many other differences even though they have the same time and very similar mix names.
