“Pearl in the Shell” is the fourth and final single released by musician Howard Jones from the album Human’s Lib. Released in May 1984, the song reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart. It features a saxophone solo by Davey Payne of Ian Dury’s band The Blockheads.

Unlike Jones’ previous singles, the 12″ single edition did not feature an extended mix of the main track, though a nearly 9 minute remixed version did appear on the US 12″ promo which has never appeared on CD. A 6 minute mix did appear on the 12″ album.

A rare one indeed. Even the rare CD version is long out of print. Speaking of vinyl only rarities, I also love the “new version” of New Song that featured on the Things Can Only get Better 12″ which has a clean intro compared to the version on the 12″ album. I saw Howard Jones once play in a club, His parents ran the merchandise stand. It was good show, and a small crowd, it was just him with his sequencers, and then the sequencer broke and about 45 minutes later after being unable to fix it, he continued the… Read more »

Thanks for the heads up on that one. I was really considering buying that compilation for that one track, but could not tell if it was the typical fade in version. Cool!!!

Wonderful story Joey. This is another reason I love Paul’s site so much because we get these very interesting anecdotes, opinions and expressions of love and devotion. I have such a renewed interest in Mr. Jones because of all this information and I am grateful to Paul and the great community here on BTG. Have a fantastic day Joey and thanks for this cool story.

Hey, Paul….

Just FYI………for the past 3 weeks or so I’ve been able to download without entering a password. There are no saved passwords in my browser (I’ve checked each time), and my browser cache automatically clears when I close it.

Not sure if you’ve stopped password-protecting or if there’s some strange WordPress fluke going on. (I use them for my site and sometimes weird stuff happens).

Cheers,
Jeff

I love this mix – it’s great!

At the time it was just an exclusive USA remix and was very rare indeed.

I’m glad Howard included this in his remasters projects as that was the time time I had ever heard this mix.

Thanks for the awesome new rip from the lovely sounding vinyl!

Love the posts as always, but I believe that this 12′ version appeared on Howard’s 3CD reissue (Action Replay + 12+ Album + Specially Selected Remixes) from 2011.
