RIP Helen Maxine Reddy (25 October 1941 – 29 September 2020)

Helen Reddy was an Australian-born singer and actress. She is often referred to as the “Queen of 70s Pop”. In the 1970s, she enjoyed international success, especially in the United States, where she placed fifteen singles in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Six of those 15 songs made the Top 10 and three of those songs reached No. 1, including her signature hit “I Am Woman.” She also placed 25 singles on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts. Fifteen of those singles made the Top 10 and 8 of those reached No. 1. She was the first artist to ever win the coveted American Music Award for “Favorite Pop/Rock Female” artist. She was also the first Australian to win a Grammy Award and to have three #1 hits in the same year.

In 1979 Helen Reddy released the disco hit “Make Love to Me” from her album “Reddy”. This was her only song to make it on to Billboard’s R&B chart where it peaked at No. 59. A year earlier in 1978, Kelly Marie had a pop hit in Australia with this tune where it peaked at No. 5.

After “meticulously” A/B listening I sadly have to say that the older rip sounds better. Thank you for the try and sorry Paul, but I can not lie.

I re-discovered Helen Reddy a couple years ago. I was a fan before “I Am Woman.” Her first 2 albums are overlooked gems (check out her bluesy Come On John.) Later in the 70’s, I was into disco and left Helen and a lot of my favorite artists behind. The 80’s were not kind to her music but some great songs can be cherry picked from her 80’s albums. Seek out her album of re-recordings of some of her hits, especially the jazzy version of Angie Baby. RIP as they say.

Thanks for this Paul.

I can’t recall ever hearing this in a club unless I was spinning. I played it frequently and had two copies for “mixing.” (I will admit it was for my pleasure and not played during peak time)

Helen was rather attractive in her day. I’m not too familiar with this track, I would have been 7 when it came out.. But the late 70’s were the dawn of a new age for extended mixes. This disco mix is interesting as there appear to be a few disco mixes from this time. For a select few artists not known for disco.

I was sad to hear of Ms. Reddy’s passing. Thanks for this tribute to her. It says so much about you as a person and music lover Paul. Helen Reddy was so huge in the 1970’s. I always loved her “Delta Dawn” record. Perhaps she’s in that mansion in the sky.

Have a nice weekend Paul.
