Go-Go’s – We Got The Beat (UK 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980

This is the original 1980 Stiff recording produced by Paul L. Wexler.

“We Got the Beat” is a song recorded by the American rock band the Go-Go’s. Written by the group’s lead guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey, and considered to be their signature song, the band recorded the song in 1980 and it was released in May as a single in the UK on Stiff Records. The song’s single release brought the Go-Go’s underground credibility in the UK. The song climbed to No. 35 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart due to the popularity of the song in clubs as an import. It is considered a new wave classic hit.

The Go-Go’s re-recorded the song for their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, released in July 1981. “We Got the Beat” was released as the album’s second single in January 1982 on I.R.S. records produced by Richard Gottehrer & Rob Freeman becoming the hit version most are familiar with.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I used to like the Go-Go’s. More to the point, I had a private love affair with Belinda Carlisle. It was so private, she wasn’t even aware of it!
Thanks for sharing this release.

Hey Paul! Thanks for this one.

I think your rips for a while now have had the channels swapped. Check your left/right connections at the cartridge and all interconnects. I am comparing to my own copies of the same records and it seems you have had swapped channels for several months or more.

For Germans it might be of interest, that the re-recording of this song had been the first main theme from the Music-Show “Formel Eins”. That had been the most succesful and popular one during the 80s on German TV.

Love this post Paul! I love the Go-Go’s but I’d never heard these versions before. Speaking of ultra rare new wave, would you happen to have this double 12″ single by Blondie? https://www.discogs.com/Blondie-Union-City-Blue/release/220644 I’ve never seen (even a bad rip of) the last three mixes in years of searching.

You need VV 58474 (US) or 12CITYDJ1 (UK). Both can be picked up cheaply on Discogs. So why don’t you buy a copy? If you speak to Paul he may be willing to rip it and post it as a request as he has done in the past (one of the Bow Wow Wow posts was done this way for me). Obviously you need to check with him first as he may not wish to do this at present. If he is happy to assist a small donation would be needed. I bought the BWW 12″ myself off Discogs and… Read more »

Go good to have you back Paul. And good decision to just upload in 16bit. it’s funny how things go…I got into your blog when I found 80s indie/alternative things like this. But then you had 70s disco as well and being musically open minded I downloaded and listened to everything you put up, no cherrypicking. Now I find myself enjoying the ‘obscure 80s’ etc still but I actually miss it when you haven’t given us a 70s nugget for a while! But more Go-Go’s is all good. I like many over here probably knew Belinda and Jane via solo… Read more »
