Go-Go’s – Our Lips Are Sealed (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981

Side 1

REQUEST

“Our Lips Are Sealed” is a song written by The Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin and The Specials and Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall.

It was first recorded by The Go-Go’s as the opening track on their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat and served as their debut American single in June 1981. The single eventually reached top 5 in Australia and Canada, and top 20 in the United States. Although originally written and performed with three verses, it is an abbreviated version of the song that appears on Beauty and the Beat.

In 1983, Hall’s band, Fun Boy Three, released their version of “Our Lips Are Sealed”. Issued as a single, the track became top ten hit in the UK, and remains the best known version of “Lips” in that country — the Go-Go’s version, while a hit elsewhere, only made #47 UK.

In 2000, Rolling Stone named “Our Lips Are Sealed” one of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs of all time.

This special US 12″ promo contains the album track “Tonite” as well as the US #2 hit “We Got The Beat” which was the follow up single to “Our Lips Are Sealed”.

Although there are no remixes for this release it is still lovely to hear these tracks in their original vinyl format especially in 24 bit.

Hey Paul, you will be pleased to know there was an eighties remix of Our Lips Are Sealed in the form of a Hot Tracks remix which was called the ‘Lips Mix’ by Glenn Cattanach (who was responsible for many of the HT remixes). Some kind soul has posted a very good fan-edit of the original video and synched it with the Lips Mix: https://vimeo.com/75266548 Glenn Cattanach also did a ‘This Is The Go-Go’s (Medley)’ Hot Tracks ‘Megamix’ which features Our Lips Are Sealed, We Got The Beat, Head Over Heels and Vacation – it can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boLIuWthxvI… Read more »

The piano is still there, it’s just not as prominent.

These bass-emphasizing masterings blow away the ‘Best of’ CD remasters. Also I didn’t realize there were different versions of “We Got The Beat”. This one doesn’t have the piano!

Fantastic rip, Paul. Thanks!

This evokes memories of summer parties, dancing with the girls, faces aglow with smiles…

Thanks for helping me feel young again even if only for a brief moment.

Actually Fatboy Slim remixed OLAS in 2005, I believe in conjunction with a retail store promotion or something {banal}. haha….. I’m sure if you search in the right places online you can find it to hear. It’s unusual, but I give Slim props for not doing a by-the-numbers “house” remix or some other generica. Cheers!

Great post.

Just in case you haven’t heard them, a fan-remixer named Evo-XR did quite good remixes of “We Got the Beat” and “Head Over Heels” a few years ago. He used a partial multi-track as his source (probably de-encrypted from Garage Band or Guitar Hero).

I have to agree with you Paul and Stefano about the I.R.S. label. It’s a way-cool design. So sorry it folded. They had a great discography too and introduced me to Torch Song. But asides from that, I love the Go-Go’s” and their records. Thanks for a great week as always with the postings. You’ve made me smile so much, that my cheeks are starting to hurt.

Have a fantastic weekend Paul!

Jeff

Great to hear these tracks after all these years. And what a marvelous silver label A&M/IRS designed for this promo. This label alone let’s you want to play this record.
