I originally posted this 12″ on June 25, 2013 which was George’s birthday. I would have never guessed that three years later we would be mourning his death and celebrating his music. I was never happy with my original transfer so I am happy to be able to give this single a brand new 2017 remaster.
“Killer/Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” is a 1993 single by British pop singer George Michael. The “P.M. Dawn Remix” was the version released as a single to promote the EP “Five Live” recorded at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, held on 20 April 1992, at Wembley Stadium. “Killer” was originally a song by British acid house producer Adamski. Written by Adamski and Seal. “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” is a psychedelic soul song, written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong as a single for Motown act The Undisputed Truth in 1971 and later that year The Temptations. Both songs were blended into a mash-up by George Michael becoming “Killer/Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone”.
George Michael’s version peaked at #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 24, 1993 after spending seven weeks on the survey.

That is terrible news about Attrell Stephen Cordes Jr, I never knew this – such a great talent.
Most people forget that the PM Dawn track Looking Through Patient Eyes is based on a sample of George Michael’s Father Figure.
I hope if people don’t know it, they check out this track.
Attrell Stephen Cordes, Jr. also known by the stage name Prince Be of P.M. Dawn passed away in June 2016, sadly missing from many tributes to key artists in pop culture that passed last year. Another fantastic post Paul, the other day BBC4 (UK) showed all of Wham’s TOTP appearances, it was a nice tribute to their earlier records, love watching old recordings of artists, your site brings back great memories of growing up and listening their music.

Didn’t know of all these remixes. Thanks Paul for posting. With the death of GM , Sony will probably embark on a massive reissue campaign of all his work since Wham (i hope). I’m sure George would want his back catalogue overhauled and was looking forward to the upcoming Freedom documentary.
Do bear in mind Sony didn’t release all of George’s material. Also the vast majority of material is licensed to labels as George owns the masters. Also all publishing rights go through George’s publishing company. So there won’t be a mad rush to release old or unreleased material. George’s estate will make all final decisions. We will only know who will run this once details of his final Will are known. Also George was fiercely protective about the quality of his work that was released so I am sure his estate will bear this in mind. Since Prince passed numerous… Read more »
