I had to Google General Public. Aha, now I remember them 🙂
Thanks again, PaulT!

The Shorter Version is perplexing to me. It’s not the 3:34 Single Version; it’s also not the album version (which was the Single Version according to time stamps on Discogs). And at around 1:50 it keeps repeating the “Don’t cry hopeless without love and affection” bit. Yet it apparently wasn’t a remixed version. Was it the “original” single version before they realized that repeated middle bit was unnecessary?

I find it funny that by coincidence this is one of the tunes I have been listening with some frequency lately. Thank you very much for the post. One suggestion: Swans Way – Soul Train.

hi paul, well, i won’t write a book this time. but i will say that out of the two general public singles i have, this is one of them. i remember hearing them on the radio, back when bands that did ska, or sounded like ub40, or haircut 100 were around. they made a small impact on me at the time, and i remember enjoying the light hearted take on romance they made. i got some play on the radio here, but not much more, and i didn’t really much from them again. thanks for a great track, and have… Read more »

Their version of I’ll Take You There was huge in 1994. At least on the East Coast. The remixes weren’t that great in my opinion. The 7″ and Extended 7″ are the only ones I would play. The other mixes just butchered the song.

I do remember hearing “Never You Done That” here on the west coast. I am not sure if it was on the radio or at a DJ friends house. To Gather together and listen/mix vinyl…Those were the days. Sigh.
Thanks Paul!

Thanks Paul, this is fantastic. Dave Wakeling and the late Ranking Roger. I loved The Beat and this an exceptionally good song by General Public, even if it inexplicably wasn’t a decent sized hit.

One of my fave Synth-pop song! Difficult to find the longer version on any CD compilation (there was a US compilation which include the longer version). Thanks DJ Paul

Another great quintessential 80’s track! You’re filling my secret list of classic 12″ from that era nicely 🙂 Not sure you take requests. If you do I’ve got a few great tracks I haven’t seen you mention on these forums. Thanks for being a ray of 24bit sunshine in a otherwise dreary COVID Seattle. Cheers, Paul!

You’ve already done 3 of my Top 10 (actually 11) most desirable 12″ singles. ALREADY DONE BY THE AMAZING DJPAULT When In Rome – The Promise Times Two – Strange But True Boxcar – Freemason (You Broke The Promise) REMAINING WISHES Figures On A Beach – In Camera Obscura. Very little known FoaB song – probably the best song they ever made – and no one knows about it! Adam Ant – Room At the Top. The extended mix is a whole lotta fun! Soft Cell – Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go. Aside from New Order’s Blue Monday, it doesn’t get more… Read more »

Thanks for the great rip, Paul! Such a great song. Compared to the Longer Version, the Shorter Version’s stereo imaging is really off…almost sounds mono. My 3:31 edit from a compilation also sounds terrible (imaging wise) compared to the Longer Version. It’s too bad Jellybean did such a good job! 🙂

For those who want to hear what I’m hearing, put on a good set of headphones and listen to the first 40 seconds of each track.

Thanks again! Have a great weekend!

Fred! Yes, please do a remix edit! That would be so great to improve upon the subpar single version.

OMG! That’s such a fun, short version – I seriously love it! And with so much better range. Fred – I marvel at the skills you brought to this little ditty – and the amazing care Paul puts into the quality of these releases. Seriously made my week! One problem: What do I call this new version – The Mr. Fred Monster Mix 7-inch Edit? 🙂

Thanks and I really hope others enjoy it! I have been remixing (and re-editing) music for 30+ years. In this case I created a classic “remix edit” which is just an edited version of the full remix. I named it Fred’s Remix Edit. I am MORE than willing to make other edits on any of Paul’s posts…just let me know. The current download site only stores it for 7 days so grab it now, folks and spread the love!

Love it!!! Oh Paul, this is quite the treat for a Friday and the start of the weekend. I was just surprised that it didn’t do better than it did, but who cares, as long as it means something to someone, right? Jellybean did a nice mix on this one.

Have a great weekend Paul and to the BTG Gang!!!

Jeff

Bonus Beats: Please check out their “So Hot, Your Cool” 12-inch. Arthur Baker did a phenomenal remix with edits too!
