BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1979
DISCO FRIDAY!
France Joli (née France Joly) is a Canadian singer, born January 26 1963, who is best known for the disco classic “Come to Me.”
“Come to Me” is a #1 disco hit from 1979 performed by France Joli, who had recorded it at the age of fifteen with producer, Tony Green, who composed the song and briefly sings on it. The track also features the famed Philadelphia session vocalists, The Sweethearts of Sigma Sound. Introduced on the album France Joli, which was released in the US on 17 April 1979 on Prelude, “Come to Me” received a major boost on 7 July when Joli performed it as a last minute replacement for Donna Summer at a concert held on Fire Island, whose estimated audience numbered 5000. “Come to Me” began a three week reign atop the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play on 22 September 1979 and the France Joli album rose to #26. On the Billboard Hot 100, “Come to Me” peaked only at #15, a decent showing for a new artist, but also a symptom of the increasing disenchantment of Top 40 radio stations with disco music. The single also peaked at #36 R&B and #47 Adult Contemporary.

This comes as quite a surprise but a pleasant one nonetheless. Thank you Dj PaulT! 🙂
Paul – thanks so very much for this Tony Green production.
You’re welcome Lollipop!
Thanks for this, Paul! A great favourite here, too! Never heared this version, though. I only knew the looooong album version. It’s a “Disco Monday” for me, since I missed last week’s T.G.I.F tribute, but a pretty nice way to start my working week! I hope you keep the “Disco Friday” posts coming. I’ll definitively be an addict! Have a nice week!
Hi George E. I am happy to see another fan of this song. I am planning to make Disco Friday a regular part of BTG.
I also came across another 12″ (Scandinavian promo) on Discogs http://www.discogs.com/France-Joli-Come-To-Me/release/579953
Remixed by Peter Dahl. Never knew this even existed. Would love to hear how this is!
I Love this song! I have Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess) and RuPaul singing it – the only version I knew until you posted this!!! Love Love Love it!!!Thank you for this slice of disco heaven x
Hi Wolfie I have never heard the Lucy Lawless & RuPaul version sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out. This is one of my favorite disco songs.
I love your Disco Friday feature, Paul!
Both nostalgic and fitting!
This is a classic I love from ’79, as with Poussez’s Never Gonna Say Goodbye and Carrie Lucas’ ’77 great I Gotta Keep Dancin’ and even better ’80 remix in Keep Smilin’!
You’ve got me in a Disco frenzy now!
And to think this young lady got her start by being a last minute replacement for Donna Summer at a Fire Island concert. She certainly was in the right place at the right time 🙂
Thanks Paul for this interesting post!
There was a early 2000s club remixes version of this single I remember!
lots of hard hitting dance mixes
You’re welcome Kumi 🙂
Thanks for this one. I always thought this was one of the prettiest songs of the “true” disco period.
You’re welcome VanceMan. I totally agree 🙂
Wao, this one does take me back! Thanks a lot for sharing Paul!
