Foreigner – Say You Will (Germany 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“Say You Will” is a song by British-American rock band Foreigner. It was the first single released from the album Inside Information (1987), and was co-written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones . The single reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became their fourth #1 hit on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, holding the top spot for four weeks, starting on December 19, 1987.

“Say You Will” was one of Foreigner’s last two Top 10 chart hits in the United States, followed by the 1988 release of the single “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” (which reached #5 on the Hot 100 chart). The song also became the band’s third-highest charting hit in Germany, where it reached #22, faring even better in Switzerland, the Netherlands, and particularly Norway, where it reached #4. The video clip for this song, directed by David Fincher, peaked at #2 in MTV’s Top Ten chart in December 1987.

Allmusic noted that the single was a “good example” of the band’s “balancing act” as “the guitar-heavy style of their early work gave way to slick arrangements that pushed electronics to the fore…temper(ing) its rock guitar edge…and Lou Gramm’s quasi-operatic vocals…by thick layers of chiming synthesizers and an array of electronic textures.”

It’s always bothered me how the engineer cut off some of Lou Gramm’s vocal in the Say You Will remix to preserve a loop (around 3:19 of the track). Unprofessional.

Thanks for the up, nonetheless. This is a great treasure trove of otherwise forgotten singles.

I am so glad that this minute corner of the net exists. There is no need for me to pile on the praise that really should come from the hordes of 80s and 90s producers and mixers of these limited vinyl releases. Copyright restrictions aside, you sir, should be credited for all your efforts from the people that really mattered in the industry when these wonders were a breath of fresh air. P.S. Could you please amend the Software Used portion of your posts… Click Removeal: Manual should read Click Removal: Manual Thank you (and please accept my humble apologies… Read more »

Bolt,

I couldn’t have said it better than what you did. I so wish the people involved with the music that Paul showcases would acknowledge what Paul does. Because of what he does, it makes one aware of other releases these people are involved in. Paul does so much for all of us, especially giving tribute to the people responsible for putting out these great 12-inch mixes in the first place.

Have a nice weekend Bolt!

Jeff

Thanks for replying to my comment Paul and thanks also to you Jeff. What else can I say? Well, many of the digital releases by Paul available from this oasis were in my possession back in the day as either 7 inch or 12 inch vinyl and just catching glimpses of those thumbnails on Paul’s posts brings back many, many wonderful memories of my teenage/young adult years (I’ll leave it up to you to figure out how wonderful it is for me to be able to click a silly little button, wait a few seconds and revisit my youth once… Read more »
