Fleetwood Mac – Big Love (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

Re-Rip Remastered

I originally posted this 12″ in March of 2010 on the old Blogger site. Since originally ripping the single I have purchased newer equipment and improved some of my ripping technique. I decided that since I am doing a Fleetwood Mac series that I would revisit this 12″ and update the rip. This 12″ is also being offered in 24bit lossless for the first time. Enjoy!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

“Big Love” is a song by Fleetwood Mac, that appeared on their 1987 album Tango in the Night. The song was the first single to be released from the album, reaching number five on the U.S. charts, and number nine in the UK. The single was also a hit on the American dance charts, where the song peaked at number seven.

A 12-inch version featured an extended dance mix, with added vocals by Stevie Nicks. While the 12-inch version included “You & I, Part II” from the Tango in the Night album, the 7-inch version included an non-album track, “You & I, Part I”. A limited edition 12-inch picture disc was released in the UK, as well as a double 7-inch pack, which contained the “Big Love” single, and an exclusive 7-inch featuring “The Chain” as an A-side.

“Big Love” was written by Lindsey Buckingham, and was originally going to be part of his third solo album which he began working on in 1985, but the project became a Fleetwood Mac album instead. The song epitomised the stylised production techniques used on the album, with its provocative “oh – ahh” male/female vocal exchange. Though many assumed the female “ahh” to be Stevie Nicks, it was actually Lindsey Buckingham performing both, created by way of his voice being sampled and altered in the studio to mimic that of a woman. The sample was aired several times on Late Night with David Letterman, where Letterman told viewers they were hearing the sounds of CPR.

Since Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac in 1987 (shortly after Tango in the Night was released), the band never performed “Big Love” live until his return in 1997. It was in 1993, on his first solo tour, that Buckingham performed a stripped down guitar-only version of the song. In 1997, he performed it in the same style on Fleetwood Mac’s live album and video The Dance, as well as also appearing on the second volume of Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown film soundtrack. Buckingham continues to perform the song on Fleetwood Mac and solo tours.

Special note about this single: First pressings of this 12″ had the label missprinted to show that it portrayed having “You and I (Part 1)I”, as the B-side. This is incorrect, the single actually contains the album track “You and I (Part 2)”. Later editions had this corrected on the label. This problem also exists of the Canadian edition of the single. *As a bonus track I have included “Big Love (Remix Edit)” taken from the US 12″ promo Warner Bros. PRO-A-2723.

Interestingly I have the picture disc of this in my now rarely played 12″ Collection.
It was never my favourite track but back the late 80’s I used to wander the record fairs and pick these things up.. I seem to think this was out of one of the 4 for £1 bins but its been quite a few sleeps so might be wrong.

I don’t even like the non PG version of Fleetwood Mac that much but an Arthur Baker remix? I’ll give it a go! Thanks Paul.

Paul, do you have You and I (Part 1) somewhere else so you can share it?

Many thanks for the Fleetwood mac flood, they produced some really nice 12-inch singles in that period.

I have a rip of it, Alessandro, but it’s a bit crackly, to say the least! Still very listenable, though.

Well, I just YouTubed Part 1. I feel like they missed an opportunity by not bookending the album with that—it could’ve been a dreamy, somewhat abstract intro and would’ve better connected Lindsay’s funkier, edgier songs to Stevie and Christine’s poppier compositions.

Thanks Paul for this one!
And now time for really dating myself… 🙂
I remember when the “Tango” album was originally out… that tape practically lived in my Walkman while I hiked from class to class around my college campus…

I do actually like the Tango remixes, even though I must say Arthur did a better job with this two than Jellybean. Jellybean’s mixes here are more *straightforward/lazy and *atmospheric/sparse. *delete where neccesary As mentioned yesterday, the AB Big Love remixes are my favourite. Added a new dimension to an already musky and sweaty song. Don’t know about now, but this remix still get spun on the islands of Ibiza well into the start of the ’00s! There were rumours then that label mate Madonna provided the “ahhs” when the single was first released. Great publicity and promotion stunt by… Read more »

Never knew there was an error on the German pressing of “Everywhere”. I have UK12in. It’s been a long while since I last played it. Jellybean tended to be hit and miss at that last stage of his career. His remix of James Ingram & Micahel McDonald “Ya Mo B There”, however, was fantastic! Don’t think you’ve done that one yet, have you Paul? In my opinion, the ‘Tango In The Night’ album versions eclipsed the 12in mixes – a shame as there some really great remixers around at that time that could’ve done a much better job than Jellybean… Read more »

Thanks Paul for this track to let me cross Hump Day here in Asia with better ease. A climatic sexual urgency that is very, very hard to ignore in this classic piece! ~ Chwee (Sg)

The European mainland edition (German pressed) contains the Jellybean remix. But beware: Warner Germany made a mistake during the mastering, because the remix runs too slow. I’d pitch my turntable somewhat 20% faster. The German 12 inch pressings from Warner (and Teldec) used to be quality pressings. They always used a high quality vinyl, no flaws or additional surface noises and with an exceptional low static energy. If possible they’d make the run out groove as long as possible, keeping the music grooves mostly in the beginning or halfway the record, assuring optimal sound quality. Clean pressings with the hole… Read more »

The European mainland 12 inch (German pressed) that I have contains (apart from a fab cover) the Arthur Baker extended remix on the A-side and You and I, part 1 on the B-side. A must have for both sides back in 1987.

I cannot believe that Warner is doing soooooo long to release a decent 25th anniversary reissue of ‘Tango in the Night’ on 2 CD’s. The first with the album and all the bonus tracks and the second with all the remixes.

Wow… this is a great post for me because, in my opinion, Lindsey Buckingham is one of the best rock guitarists out there. Thank you yet again.
