Burning The Ground Exclusive
Originally released in 1988, “She Drives Me Crazy” marked the explosive return of British trio Fine Young Cannibals. Issued as the lead single from their second (and final) album The Raw & the Cooked (1989), the track became an instant classic—showcasing Roland Gift’s unmistakable falsetto and the band’s clever fusion of pop, soul, and funk.
Written by frontman Roland Gift and bassist David Steele, and co-produced by the band along with David Z (a longtime Prince collaborator), “She Drives Me Crazy” has one of the most iconic snare sounds of the era. The distinctive “pop” of the drum was no accident—David Z employed an inventive technique during the recording sessions at Prince’s famed Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis. The snare part was recorded separately, then played back through a speaker placed on top of the snare drum while a mic underneath captured the sound again—creating that sharp, tight punch that helped the track cut through on both radio and the dancefloor.
Chart-wise, the single became the band’s biggest hit. In the UK, it reached No. 5—making it their highest-charting release at home. But it was in the U.S. that the song really took off, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and staying there for a week in April 1989. It also topped charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, and Spain, cementing Fine Young Cannibals’ global success. Two different music videos were shot for the track—one by French choreographer/director Philippe Decouflé and another by Pedro Romhanyi.
Today on Burning the Ground, I’m featuring the U.S. 12″ single, which includes three rare remixes by Justin Strauss: a club-friendly extended remix a Dub, and a tight edit version—none of which have been released digitally or appeared on commercial CD (except for a scarce promo) which included the Justin Strauss Remix. Strauss’s approach adds extra rhythmic space and re-sequencing, extending the groove while preserving the quirky charm of the original.
If, like me, you spent countless nights in record stores or at clubs chasing down mixes you knew weren’t on your regular 12″, this one’s for you. A peak pop moment, reimagined with the dancefloor in mind.

I am currently on a Justin Strauss vibe at the moment, so these remixes are a delight to see and hear.
Justin Strauss did some great remixes around this time and one of my favourites was by Tracie Spencer – This House from 1990. I have a Promo CD Maxi of that which included all the Strauss mixes.
Thanks again, Paul 🙂
Hey John,
Sounds like you’re on the perfect wavelength—Justin Strauss was on fire during that era! I’m right there with you—his work always had such a cool, sophisticated edge. Tracie Spencer – This House is a fantastic pick! Those mixes are top-tier, and that promo CD maxi is a real gem to have in the collection.
Glad you’re enjoying these—more Strauss gems to come 🙂
Thanks for the kind words, as always!
Cheers,
Paul
Hi John
another pretty balearic Justin Strauss remix around this time you need to listen to:

@Paul: I would welcome a rip of it anytime 😉
Paul you are really hitting the sweet spot (and did I mention you are the best)!! You really have your finger on the pulse of what us vinyl aficionados are looking for. (Now don’t let your head get so big it doesn’t fit through the door, Lol :)). I’m still reeling from yesterday’s post, this is like a whole other cake to sink into. I’m so looking forward to it. Regarding the snare drum part, yes it was so distinctive, part of this song’s appeal and part of the defining sounds of the 80s. Music was so bright, inventive and… Read more »
Hey Raymond, You always know how to make a guy smile—thank you! I’ll try to keep the ego in check… but with compliments like that, it’s getting harder to squeeze through the doorway, LOL 🙂 I totally agree—the ‘80s had this incredible spark, a boldness in production and creativity that felt limitless at the time. That snare in She Drives Me Crazy really is a perfect example—so punchy and unique, it grabs you instantly. And yes, as the ‘90s moved on, things definitely got more polished but lost a bit of that wild, inventive edge. I’m so glad these posts… Read more »
She drives me crazy is a song that still delivers, and you delivered rips of 2 different maxis of the tune, with lots of different mixes, ‘voor elk wat wils’ as they say in dutch, something for everyone.
Thanks for all your efforts and sharing these twelvers Paul!
peace,
dj
Hey Don Juliam,
Thank you so much for the kind words! Totally agree—She Drives Me Crazy still hits just as hard today as it did back in ’88. That snare alone is timeless! I’m glad you enjoyed the different versions—love the Dutch saying ‘voor elk wat wils’… that’s exactly what I was going for with these two maxis. There’s something special about hearing how each mix brings a new flavor to a classic.
Appreciate you taking the time to comment—and for being part of the Burning the Ground community!
Peace,
Paul
A timeless classic, no doubt. I haven´t yet listened to all the remixes you gifted us with but as always with your fantastic posts, there will be one or more versions that are new to me. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon the multitracks out there and created my own stripped-down remix that I just listened to yesterday morning. 🙂 I´m so looking forward to experiencing your posts. Thank you again, Paul.
Thanks so much for the kind words! She Drives Me Crazy truly is one of those timeless tracks that never loses its edge. I love hearing that you’ve played around with the multitracks and created your own stripped-down remix—how cool is that? There’s something special about revisiting your own mix after some time and hearing it with fresh ears.
I’m really glad to be able to share these different versions with fellow music lovers like you. Hope one or two of them surprise you in the best way.
Appreciate you being here!
Cheers,
Paul
You’re so great, Paul, in giving the people what they want!! You’re so generous in doing so. I just hope you didn’t go crazy in trying to locate this record from your storage! I’m looking forward to hearing these mixes, especially since they contain wonderful Chep Nunez edits!! I gobble-up these cut and paste percussions like a Pac Man character!! Thanks for “feeding” my ears with these aural bits and pieces!!
Much praise and gratitude for everything you do, Paul!!!
Jeff
Hey Jeff,
Your message seriously made my day—thank you! I had to laugh at the thought of me going crazy digging through storage… you’re not too far off! But totally worth it when it means sharing something like this with fellow fans who really get it. And yes—those Chep Nunez edits are absolute gold! Nobody sliced up percussion like he did. I love that Pac-Man visual… perfect way to describe the way his mixes hit the ears!
Always appreciate your enthusiasm and kind words. It means a lot.
Big thanks,
Paul
Also Greg ski royal he also good at edits too
Jeff also Greg ski royal cut up edits too on the other version as well
Thanks so much! As an Edit Head, I love hearing about these things!! Edits make music productions more exciting! These guys play their cuts and splices like a drum kit!
I appreciate you letting me know!😃
Thank you VERY much, Paul!! This is a great 12″ and Justin really shines here! My favorite memory of these mixes is the 3:29-3:42 segment on the dub (the same instrumentation is done near the end of the non-dub)…something about the stuttering, echo, and lower key of “I” is just so memorable to this day and even back in the day it was a great way to introduce the mix/song. I swear it sounds identical to another remix back in the day (I’m thinking a Janet Jackson song) but I wanted to write you here first with all my thanks… Read more »
Hey Fred, Thank you so much for such a great message! I love that you called out that 3:29–3:42 moment in the dub—that part is pure magic. Justin really knew how to tease out the groove and give it that stuttered, echo-drenched drama. I know exactly what you mean about the drop in pitch on “I”… it gives the mix such a haunting, hypnotic vibe. And now you’ve got me wondering about that Janet remix too—it definitely feels like something from that era of clever edit wizardry. Really appreciate you taking the time to write—and so glad this one brought… Read more »

Stay tuned—more to come!
Paul
Hi DJPaulT, your work is mint. I cant believe this is a vinyl. Thats quality.
Hey Gustavo,
Thanks so much! That means a lot to hear. I really try to get the best possible sound out of these records—vinyl can still shine when it’s cleaned, cared for, and transferred properly. Glad it came through for you!
Appreciate you stopping by and listening!
Cheers,
DJPaulT
Love these Justin Strauss mixes! Thank you Paul for restoring and posting them.
Hey Brad,
So glad you’re enjoying the Justin Strauss mixes—they really are something special! He had such a great ear for detail and rhythm. Always a pleasure to restore and share these gems with fellow fans like you. Thanks for listening and for the kind words!
All the best,
Paul
Yes, seeking out rare versions is quite a hobby. Because an anniversary edition of OMD’s Crush was announced with a couple remixes of So In Love from back then, it reminded me of my disappointment when I bought the import 12” and the a-side was the album version. Sometimes the search led to exciting things like the various Depeche versions in different territories, and sometimes not. This is another gem you’ve posted! Thx ☺️
Hey ING,
I totally hear you—chasing down rare versions can be a rollercoaster! That So In Love import 12″ situation sounds all too familiar… expecting a remix and getting the album version instead? Been there! But you’re right—sometimes the search turns up gold, like all those regional Depeche Mode variations (France, Germany, Japan… each one with its own twist). I’m glad this post hit the mark for you—always great to connect with a fellow version hunter!
Thanks for sharing the memory and for being here
Paul
C’mon, you’re kidding me!
Yesterday’s dream came true today!
A VERY VERY BIG THANK YOU!!!!!
Kind regards from Vienna, Austria
Christian
Hey Christian,
No kidding at all—dreams do come true around here! 🙂
Your excitement made my day—seriously! I’m so glad this one hit the sweet spot for you. Always happy to share the music we love with people who really appreciate it.
Sending kind regards right back to you in beautiful Vienna!
Cheers,
Paul
Well, this one was THOROUGHLY covered, thanks!!
My pleasure, Raymond 🙂
