Falco – Jeanny (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

Jeanny is a song recorded by Austrian musician Falco, released in December 1985 as the third single from his third studio album Falco 3 (1985). It was written and composed by Falco and Rob and Ferdi Bolland, who also produced the song.

It was the third song released as a single out of the album in 1986. Controversial due to its lyrics, it nonetheless became a number one hit in numerous European countries.

In 2008 the song re-entered the Austrian Single Charts.

The song is about a relationship between a man and a woman named Jeanny.

At the time when it reached number one, critics said that the song glorifies rape. German TV and radio personality Thomas Gottschalk made various negative remarks and called the song “rubbish”. An outcry in German language markets caused the song to be banned by some radio broadcasters or played with a preceding warning by others.

Falco argued that it is about the musings of a stalker.

The part of the “news flash” in the track is spoken by German newsreader Wilhelm Wieben.

Several feminist associations called for a boycott of the song. Some TV and radio stations in West Germany agreed and didn’t play the song “for ethical reasons”, while others just played it on their charts shows. In East Germany the song was not on air and playing it in dance clubs was prohibited.

There were also demands to prohibit the song in West Germany, but officials denied the application in April 1986. This angered news presenter Dieter Kronzucker, who presented the daily news magazine heute-journal for the West German public TV station ZDF: his two teenage daughters, along with their cousin, had been kidnapped and briefly held captive in Tuscany several years earlier; this formed the basis of his anger about the song’s release, which he discussed on heute-journal. Following this, further radio stations followed the boycott. In the German federal state of Hesse the song was aired accompanied by a warning. In the popular music show Formel Eins cutscenes were aired, but only whilst the song was at the top of the charts.

Hi,

German federal state is called Hessen, not Hesse.

Anyway, many many thanks for your first class recordings. Thumbs up!

I can remember and read it once again that the Dutch brothers Bolland & Bolland produced these 12 inch. Immediately I remembered their 1984 hit in Germany “Imagination”, which ran very often in our discotheques in my area! Expected throughout Europe. A title that sounds also funky & soulful between genre Pop and RnB/Soul/Funk. Paul, it would be nice if you could release this title in future. According to my research on http://www.discogs.com, there are the following versions that would be interesting for ripping: BOLLAND – Imagination (Extended Version) 5:50 [A&M Records ‎– AMS 12.9811] BOLLAND – Imagination 5:50 [TELDEC… Read more »

Hi, Thank you Paul for this classic. Much appreciated. However, when listening to 24bit Flac I’m hearing how to say ups and downs quite noticable especially in silences when the song starts right afterwards. For ex. at the beginning og this track I can hear it, it appears like something tried to compress it, did it but failed to do it ‘well’, in a linear fashion. Especially at 4->6 sec and 12->18secs, 50->52secs. 2:08, etc It may be my computer/sound card but I doubt it since all my archives are in FLAC and I noticed this kind of ‘compression issue?’… Read more »

I allllllllmost didn’t grab this because the Rock Me Amadeus is the American Edit which is theoretically the same as Paul’s post: http://burningtheground.net/2014/03/falco-rock-me-amadeus-us-7/ But nope…that older post is 3:12 while this Jeanny flip side mix is 5:55. Same mix names, but obviously quite different mixes. This 5:55 is what I have been looking for quite some time. The Salieri Mix is my favorite of Rock Me Amadeus but I found that is (as well as all the other RMA mixes) is way off on sound quality. I’m not sure what Falco was thinking in that all the RMA versions just… Read more »

Thanks for the tip! No, I have not…but seeing that it is a digital download only, I don’t bother with them (even if they were free). If they were to provide lossless files, sure…but not those MP3 files. I’m a bit snob. 🙂

you can find the ‘salieri version’ of “rock me amadeus” on these falco CDs: – the american CD of “falco 3” from 1986 – the japanese CD of “falco 3” from 1986 – “the hit-singles” from 1998 – “so80s falco” from 2012 and an numerous various artists compilation CD as well. by the way: i always disliked the ‘salieri version’ cause it gets rid of falco’s lyrics and furthermore is a bit without structur, less a song than a collection of gimmicky elements. so i created my own version which combines all these elements but also adds the falco lyrics.… Read more »

Nice edit! I will have to dig for those mixes and re-create your mix unless you have the WAV (or other lossless) you would be willing to share.

In the USA, I believe there were custom radio-station mixes because your mix sounds just like the ones I heard back in the day. In fact, there were probably 5-6 other mixes that I heard that were radio friendly and stayed close to the radio edit.

The 2 mixes you used for your youtube mix were the 2 mixes I most often heard.

As a teenager back in 1985 I just loved that song and all the controversy about it in the nearby Germany didn’t interest me much. Thanks Paul for all the information about this classic.

Thank you Paul for adding this into your Falco vinyl rips. My good friend Michaela introduced me to Falco a long time ago with the original “Der Kommissar” before After The Fire’s version raced up the charts. I became an instant fan and collected certain Falco twelves before his American break-out, “Rock Me Amadeus” took over radio waves. Michaela told me about Jeanny and it was cool that she translated the song for my non-German ears. It was quite the chilling song, but I like songs like this. It doesn’t make me a ghoul or someone sinister because I do.… Read more »

thank you, paul!
this is one of the last mixes by falco that were not available in digital quality.
the english language extended version (8:25 minutes) had it’s CD debut some years ago, but not this 12″/7″ 5:25 minute version.
