BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” is a song written and performed by the British new wave music duo Eurythmics. The song is the title track of their album of the same name and was released as the fourth and final single from the album in early 1983. The song became their breakthrough hit, establishing the duo worldwide. Its music video helped to propel the song to number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was the first single released by Eurythmics in the US.
The original recording’s main instrumentation featured a sequenced analog synthesizer riff, which Stewart accidentally discovered in the studio when he played a bass track backwards. Apart from the synthesizer, the arrangement also uses a Movement Systems Drum Computer, a piano in the middle eight, and Lennox’s multitracked harmony vocals.
The b-side “I Could Give You a Mirror” is different from the one found on the album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).
This 12″ features the full length version of “Sweet Dreams…” Most of the LP’s and CD’s and 7″ singles have the shorter, 3:36 version.

Thank you a thousand times for this release. This is the best available version of alternate I Could Give You A Mirror. Shame it was not released in Boxed re-releases. I’m very grateful.
🙂 Thanks again!
Could this be THE NUMBER ONE Classic 80’s song of all time? I’m sure it’s right at the top of the list. Thanks Paul for posting. The singles are just as important and exciting as the remixes. Thrilled to see this. Possibly one of my favorite songs ever. Period. And I am obsessed with the video. Have you seen all the comments on this video on YouTube. So many younger people fascinated with it. And some of the comments are hilarious! Like people wondering what is up with the cows, LOL!!!!
The Safety Dance may give this a run for the money, but I wouldn’t place bets on it. 🙂
“MOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” Oh MY, how could I forget those cows!! Memoryboy, that was such a surreal scene. Almost like a Salvador Dali thing!! Hey, thanks for the comment the other day. Paul and his music really light me up and his fanbase is amazing as well. I can’t begin to express all the feelings I get by coming here everyday. It’s the best anti-depressant without the side-effects. Digital dopamine!!
Have a fantastic day memoryboy!!
Jeff
Paul, as always, you make our “sweet dreams” come true!! Everything about this song is perfect, and like the above commenters said, iconic. I have heard this song countless times and still I never tire of it. Heard the song first and then saw the video and was held under its spell. It’s haunting in every way. I love the scene where they’re in the boat and Dave is playing the cello. Great dream imagery. I loved Annie’s androgynous look too. She was like this powerful, almost like a school mistress/dominatrix commanding that we listen to what she says. And… Read more »
Great analogy Jeff. Have a great evening 🙂
Thank you for these Eurythmics 12inches. Great sound on your rips.
You’re welcome darym3 🙂
I really love this one! It was a highlight of the 80’s, if not the real sound of the 80’ss! The shorter version (3’36) is the actual album and single version… except in France ! We had the 12″ version on the “regular” 7inch! I played it so much, that I just couldn’t understand why it was not on many compilation in this form, as for me it was the “single version”… The B-Side is another highlight for me. This alternative version of ‘I could Give you’ is really better than the original album version. I’m really sad that this… Read more »
A great posting. I bought the 7″ in France a few years ago and was so happy finally to have the long version but, of course, this rips beats that hands down.
Thanks, Paul.
Jonathan
You’re welcome Jonathan 🙂
my 7″ has been played so many times (both sides !) that i’m also really happy to find it here in a good quality ! 😉
This song is a real interesting juxtaposition of cold electronics and soulful vocals. This along with Situation by Yazoo is the absolute epitome of pop from a new wave synth duo. Thank you again Paul. It’s a shame to hear about Robert Miles.
You’re welcome Joey 🙂
I have to TOTALLY agree with you there on the Situation/Sweet Dreams front. Absolute trendsetters.
What can we say? Marvellous, marvellous, marvellous record.
I have the French edition of the 12inch featuring “Baby’s Gone Blue” as a second b-side track.
Had hoped to find this here as a bonus 🙂
As always, your rip sounds fantastic, Paul. Thank you very much.
And as it is 9pm over here, sweet dreams to all of you 🙂
You’re welcome Song_and_Dance. Sweet dreams 🙂
Baby’s Gone Blue was on my copy of the UK 12″ too, I wonder why they removed it in the US?
It can be found on the remaster of the Sweet Dreams album.
Thanks for this rip, I too think this is the better version of I could Give You a Mirror.
Thanks Paul. This is one of the best synth pop tunes ever written. Definitely a new wave classic and features Annie’s most memorable vocals ever.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
Iconic 80s. Great one Paul! You did Chill In My Heart 7″ some time ago. Maybe time for the 12″ chill mix soon??
I will add it to my very long list Thomas 🙂
To say this is a milestone is an understatement. Beyond top 40, this is in the top five greatest synthpop tracks ever recorded. I could go on, but it’s unnecessary. This is a must have. Thanks Paul. 🙂
You’re welcome Goodguy 🙂
Off topic, I know Paul, but I hope you can make mention of the tragic loss of Robert Miles today. He will be missed 🙁
Very sad news he died of cancer. He had a string of dance hits in the US in the mid 90s “Children” was his most well known.
