Eurythmics – Julia (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

R E Q U E S T

“Julia” is a song performed by British pop duo Eurythmics. It was written by group members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart for their album 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother), which served as the soundtrack to the film 1984, an adaptation of the political novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. The song was produced by Stewart and was the second and final single released from the album.

The song is a ballad with very sparse electronic instrumentation and an almost a cappella performance by Lennox. Her vocals are accentuated by vocoder effects in the background. The title and lyrics of the song are based upon the novel’s heroine and love interest, Julia. The cover artwork for the single is a still image from the film, featuring English actress Suzanna Hamilton as Julia.

Midway through the song, an instrumental line based on J. S. Bach’s “Fugue #2 in C Minor” from The Well Tempered Clavier, Book 1, can be heard. Breaking a string of six consecutive Top 10 hits, “Julia” peaked at number 44 on the UK singles chart.

The version of “Julia” found on the soundtrack differs from the one being played during the end-credits of the film – which is more string based with less synthetic arrangements. This is also the case for many of the other songs on the soundtrack versus their version used in the film.

Such a haunting, beautiful yet forlorn, sounding track. Thanks for sharing your 12″ track.

Thanks for this Paul. You only ever hear about Sexcrimes in reference to this soundtrack.

I will reiterate one of the comments though, that the timing of the extended mix and the album mix of Julia seem to be roughly the same. I wonder if a 7″ edit was ever released. The extended mix of Ministry of Love is a great find though.

Thanks again.

One of my favorite Eurythmics songs! I usually download regular flacs, but this time I decided to try the 24bit files– they sound great! When I get a bigger hard drive, I may switch to hi-res music “full time”!

thanks for posting this one! annie is my all time favorite musician, and this is indeed quite rare. i agree that virgin will probably never re-release this gem of an album, i remember hearing that eurythmics were sued over this album, and it stalled their career for a bit. i don’t think they retain rights to this album in the u.s.

this is quite a haunting album … its hard to believe that this extended version of ministry of love was actually called an extended version .. 1:25 seconds of chants and various voices and shrieks and then right into the album version but edited at the end. The final ‘ministry of love’ and boom the songs ends is sorely missing here and would have been the perfect ending.

Thanks Paul I needed a good quality rip of Ministry Of Love (Extended Mix).
This soundtrack to me is just awesome (I wish Virgin would remaster it!)
Its somewhat of a departure for Eurythmics, however I think it still fits neatly into their catalogue.
Hope you had a nice mini-vacation.
I was sweating moving furniture around re-arranging the house.
Oh Well! It cant always be diamonds & champagne, LOL!
