BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
R E Q U E S T
“Julia” is a song performed by British pop duo Eurythmics. It was written by group members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart for their album 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother), which served as the soundtrack to the film 1984, an adaptation of the political novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. The song was produced by Stewart and was the second and final single released from the album.
The song is a ballad with very sparse electronic instrumentation and an almost a cappella performance by Lennox. Her vocals are accentuated by vocoder effects in the background. The title and lyrics of the song are based upon the novel’s heroine and love interest, Julia. The cover artwork for the single is a still image from the film, featuring English actress Suzanna Hamilton as Julia.
Midway through the song, an instrumental line based on J. S. Bach’s “Fugue #2 in C Minor” from The Well Tempered Clavier, Book 1, can be heard. Breaking a string of six consecutive Top 10 hits, “Julia” peaked at number 44 on the UK singles chart.
The version of “Julia” found on the soundtrack differs from the one being played during the end-credits of the film – which is more string based with less synthetic arrangements. This is also the case for many of the other songs on the soundtrack versus their version used in the film.

the extended version of Ministry of love is a masterpiece
Such a haunting, beautiful yet forlorn, sounding track. Thanks for sharing your 12″ track.
Any chance for a re-up? The link goes to a blank screen. Thanks!!!
Never mind. I got it to work. Thanks anyway!
Thanks Paul. I haven’t heard this song before so I am looking forward to listening to it.
Thanks for this Paul. You only ever hear about Sexcrimes in reference to this soundtrack.
I will reiterate one of the comments though, that the timing of the extended mix and the album mix of Julia seem to be roughly the same. I wonder if a 7″ edit was ever released. The extended mix of Ministry of Love is a great find though.
Thanks again.
Thank you very much, dear DjPaul!
this song is one my favorite.
I have the vinyl but I can’t play because my player is broken!
So your website is the best for me
Salutations fron France
Best regards
One of my favorite Eurythmics songs! I usually download regular flacs, but this time I decided to try the 24bit files– they sound great! When I get a bigger hard drive, I may switch to hi-res music “full time”!
Hi Doug. In my opinion 24bit is the way to go 🙂
Thank you!
Thanks for this! I have a version of Ministry of Love that’s 7:53 but not this one! Can’t wait to hear it.
Mike what can you tell us about your 7.53 version ?? vinyl ? cd ? compilation ? promo ? Im sure its quite better than 5.13 version !??
thanks for posting this one! annie is my all time favorite musician, and this is indeed quite rare. i agree that virgin will probably never re-release this gem of an album, i remember hearing that eurythmics were sued over this album, and it stalled their career for a bit. i don’t think they retain rights to this album in the u.s.
You’re welcome Feanor. It’s so odd to me that a recording artist doesn’t own rights to their own work. This happens quite often and that is why things don’t get released due to the labels being greedy.
This is Annie at her most ethereal mode. Thanks Paul.
Totally agree Omar!
Just got back from vacation and am catching up. 🙂 LOVE THIS!
Good to see you Conner. I have been wondering where you have been. Hope to hear from you 🙂
this is quite a haunting album … its hard to believe that this extended version of ministry of love was actually called an extended version .. 1:25 seconds of chants and various voices and shrieks and then right into the album version but edited at the end. The final ‘ministry of love’ and boom the songs ends is sorely missing here and would have been the perfect ending.
I stand corrected ..Room 101 has the ending I was speaking of ..
Thanks Paul I needed a good quality rip of Ministry Of Love (Extended Mix).
This soundtrack to me is just awesome (I wish Virgin would remaster it!)
Its somewhat of a departure for Eurythmics, however I think it still fits neatly into their catalogue.
Hope you had a nice mini-vacation.
I was sweating moving furniture around re-arranging the house.
Oh Well! It cant always be diamonds & champagne, LOL!
I love moving the furniture around once in a while 🙂 Makes you feel you are in a different place. With CD’s going away I doubt that this will ever be remastered.
Hi!
Please post the Grace Jones single “I´m not perfect”, do you have it?
The Extended Version of Julia actually is the album version. More of interest is the extended version of Ministry of Love
Yes “Ministry Of Love” is what makes this 12″ rare.
Thank you dear Paul! I love the Eurythmics and you know that 😉
I hope that your weekend was perfect! 🙂
I had a great weekend. Thank you Spring 🙂
Thanks , i never heard before the 12 version!
Very welcome Drake 🙂
Wow!! I didn’t even know there’s a Extended Mix to Julia!!! I have always love this track, music video too. Simple but stunningly beautiful
Thank You big time!!! I can’t wait to listen to it, for the first time.
You’re welcome Victor enjoy!
Turns out Extended Mix of Julia is actually album version. Since I lost my soundtrack CD long time ago, this is still very good to have. Thanks!!
Wow. This is so rare. I always forget this single ever happened and never heard the 12″. Lovely to be reminded of Eurythmics’ brilliance once more!!
Hope you enjoy it SpookyElectric 🙂
