Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988
Gay Icon Elton John made sure to send a message to people who were cast out like him. He reassured people who were not fitting in that they would eventually find their place. Over the years he has been working for AIDS prevention. He also established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, which has raised more than $400 million. As well as an annual high-profile Oscar party which also raises money for AIDS prevention.
“Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (Part Two)” is a song by English musician Elton John and songwriter Bernie Taupin from the album Reg Strikes Back. It was released as a 12″ single in 1988 only in the United States.
Although not a particularly popular song, some critics judged it as a “most intriguing” song or the “brightest moment” of the album. John said: “That’s probably my favorite track on the album. It just has a great New York feel”. He played both versions of the song sequentially in concerts from the release of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (Part Two)” in 1988 through to 1993.
The song is about New York City and is a continuation of the song “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” from the 1972 album Honky Château. Although the song follows the same meaning of its predecessor, it has a very different tempo and instrumental arrangement and is in many ways a more complex song, with a variety of key changes and unusual chords throughout the song. A brief homage to the Beatles’ song “Drive My Car” can be heard during the trumpet solo, where Elton and the backup singers interject “beep beep, beep beep, yeah!”.

Thank you so much for Elton! Happy pride month!
Wow! Thanks for posting this Paul! I didn’t realize we needed a part 2 after the great Honky Château LP cut I used to play on the air back in the day. This is quite a surprise to turn that song into a dance track. Can’t wait to hear these mixes later. I’ll have to pick up the Reg CD for my EJ collection as well.
I was not aware of these Shep remixes, but remember the album version. Looking forward to hearing these later.
I love the sleeve cover art too.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Whoa! Soooo cool. I’ve been an Elton fan forever, and of course know the original version, but had no idea about this. Thanks a ton Paul!
Wow, what a surprise, I don’t think I ever heard this before! EJ in the 70’s, this album came on the heels of Madman and Tumbleweed, he could do no wrong at that point. My fav song from Chateau was always Mona Lisas and Madhatters, it just seemed so “mature and elegant” despite obvious hits, Rocket Man and Honky Cat, thanks!
Thank u DJ Paul. Love Shep Pettibone! Stay safe!
You’re welcome, Gilbert 🙂
Wow Paul!!! I hope you feel the breeze by your feet, because that would be from me bowing down… How can I thank you enough? One of my favorite 12 inches from Sir Elton (and I’m not just saying that). Three great remixes by Shep Pettibone plus the previous single, A Word In Spanish, what’s there not to love! And is there any artist who can even come close to Elton John’s career? Like you mentioned, a pioneering gay icon and he’s done more for AIDS prevention & awareness than practically anyone else. This will blow my previous version of… Read more »
You’re welcome, Retro Hound. I love this 12″ so much the entire “Reg Strikes Back” LP is a gem. “A Word In Spanish” is a real beauty as well. I hope you enjoy it 🙂
I completely agree! Reg Strikes Back is unique in Elton’s catalog, in that it’s a lot of dance/pop. Chris Thomas was coming off of producing INXS’ Kick album and must have brought over some of that energy. I think the album is a lot better than even Elton gives it credit! And Sleeping With The Past is even better IMHO.
We can always count on you, DjPaulT, for giving us, your loyal followers, great tracks and remixes! This is particularly interesting for me because I never knew of this track, nor its remix!! And the remix is by our beloved, Shep Pettibone!! Can’t wait to bask in its sounds later on. This is very cool of you, Paul! I’m hoping Retro Hound will love it too, since he requested something by Sir Elton for Pride Month!! I love how you answer a lot of our requests for things. You are truly a great person, Paul!! We love you lots!!!
Jeff
I hope you love it Jeff! I have no doubt you will 🙂
I hope you enjoy it too, Jeff 🙂
