Electric Light Orchestra – Getting To The Point (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986

I found “Getting To The Point” to be very fitting for the world that we find ourselves in today.

“Getting to the Point” is a song by the rock group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) from their 1986 album Balance of Power. Released in the UK as the last single from the album in July 1986, it was the last original release from the band for 15 years.

Due to a strike on Epic’s distribution department at the time of its release, the single did not make much of an impression on the singles chart. It peaked at number 95 in the UK. There was no release in the rest of Europe.

The B-Side of this single is the 1986 Balance of Power album-track “Secret Lives”. It was meant to be a separate single outtake as labelled on the Balance of Power album cover (Dutch pressings with JET or EPIC Label Catno. 26467).

There was also a UK 12 inch Epic 3 track version with the “ELO Megamix” on the B-side. The mix featured the songs from A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, Time and Balance of Power. It was mixed by Paul Dakeyne for DMC.

hi paul, i love some of the early ELO, so i don’t know this song. i heard the megamix before, and it is pretty good. i still have to get this single someday. i stopped following them after the late 70’s. But occasionally I would hear something from them. Its good they are still going even now, and also touring. I wonder what their new stuff sounds like. Unfortunately most bands don’t release singles, or remixes. There is a real cool techno version, called ‘shine’ by loverfreaks, that redid ‘shine a little love’, thats really good, that i like. So… Read more »

Thank you Paul:) I don’t respond as often as I should, but I’ve been following your blog since about 2008. If I recall correctly, ELO’s Getting To The Point was included on your original blog wayyyy back in…the late 00s? (I could be misremembering tho!) Anyway – thank you for so many years of rare and classic songs in such pristine quality. Like a lot of music collectors, I have several CD options for the major 80s hits. But for so many of the real classics, like Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me or OMD’s So In Love,… Read more »

Fabulous choice, Paul. You always know how to hit the right tone. This song really moves me.

As for the megamix: Paul Dakeyne is one of the all-time greats imho. I had never heard the megamix and I loooooove it. 🙂

Have a great weekend, Paulito and Jeff and everyone around in our safe haven here at BTG.

PS: political comment deleted by myself. I don´t want anyone to think that Paul censors comments in case anyone read the first version.

G’day Paul, thanks so much for posting this one! The ELO Megamix is a track for which I’ve been hoping to find a decent copy for a long time.

Wow, what a rarity!! I wasn’t even aware of it… Thank you Paul! You’re right, very appropriate (unfortunately) for current events. Thanks for a great week of posts! I think I speak for all of us when I say how much we all appreciate your efforts!

Mega-Chills! Mega-Thanks!! Gee Paul, you are amazing sharing this with us!! Not too familiar with the A-Side, but I am looking forward to hearing it, especially since you said that it’s relevant to what’s happening in the world today. I’m jazzed about the B-Side Mega-mix because of Paul Dakeyne of whom I think is phenomenal when it comes to making master medleys!! After a wonderful week of cool music, this is just icing on the cake!! MANY THANKS and PRAISE!!

Have a terrific weekend Paul, Song And Dance and all of you in Cyber-space!!

Jeff

What a wonderful song. I completely agree: the song fits perfectly with the world of today, sadly. Didn’t know about the megamix, it’s awesome. Thank you so much for this great post. Have a nice weekend 🙂

Ha, that’s a nice one Paul. Excellent single which I think not many will know (I’m a longtime fan of ELO), but this DMC megamix on the B-side is totally new to me. So thank you for this post!
