Duran Duran – Union Of The Snake (Japan 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Union of the Snake” is the ninth single by the English new wave band Duran Duran, released on 17 October 1983.

“Union of the Snake” was the lead single from the band’s third album Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983), and preceded its release by one month. It was originally titled, “The Union at Stake”, when the band was interviewed on The Oxford Road Show in March 1983 before their first performance of “Is there something I should know?” on U.K. television. It became one of Duran Duran’s most popular singles, hitting number one on the US Cash Box and peaking at number three on both the US Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks at the end of 1983. Further chart movement was prevented by “Say Say Say” by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson and “Say It Isn’t So” by Daryl Hall and John Oates. It also reached number three on the UK Singles Chart.

After a songwriting session near Cannes in France, much of the band’s third album was recorded at George Martin’s AIR Studios on the Caribbean island of Montserrat with producer Alex Sadkin, then mixed at 301 Studios in Sydney. Mixing for “Union of the Snake” was done right up to the last minute before the tapes had to be turned over to EMI for pressing.

Lyricist Simon Le Bon (notoriously reticent about explaining his oblique lyrics) hinted in the Duran Duran lyric book The Book of Words that the borderline might be one between the conscious and subconscious minds. In later interviews, he proclaimed that it was a reference to Tantric sex.

Drummer Roger Taylor stated that the beat and drum track was based upon David Bowie’s 1983 single “Let’s Dance”.

The B-side to “Union of the Snake” was the atmospheric piece “Secret Oktober”. Twenty-four hours before the master tapes of the single were to be delivered to EMI for distribution, singer Simon Le Bon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes wrote and mixed the B-side “Secret Oktober” in an all-night recording session.

**The “Super Mix” contained on this Japan 12″ single is also titled “Monkey Mix” on other releases.

Hi Paul. First, thank you for such good music. I too, many years ago, without knowing what Roger Taylor said about “Union of The Snake”, found similarities in rhythm and in the tone of Simon’s voice, in the 3 singles of “Seven and The Ragged Tiger” compared to the 3 singles from David Bowie’s album “Let’s Dance”: Union of The Snake -> Let’s Dance. New Moon on Monday -> China Girl. The Reflex -> Modern Love. Do you think so? On the other hand, this was my first 12 inch record that I ever bought. Although I had never heard… Read more »

I remember a school friend spending what to us was an absolute fortune to get this Japanese only ‘super mix’ on import then being devastated to get it home and find out it was just the Monkey Mix again.

Fantastic Paul – I always loved that photo on the sleeve, the way the city appeared through John’s jacket.

A great song from a great, great album. It was my first DD album and I love every single track from it, starting with the fabulous original album version of “The Reflex”. I hated its 7inch and 12inch remixes back then but grew to love them.
The 12″ remix of “Union” was and is not one of my favourites but never mind that. Love the beginning, though. Great post, Paul. Thank you.

Paul, This is not only one of my favorite songs. But one of my favorite remixes, and one of the best ones from Duran Duran. This is also, the very first 12 inch I ever bought. Now, i have a few thousand more. But this is the one that started if off for me, and got me addicted to buying them, and collecting many decades ago, I loved duran duran’s rio at the time, and the american album had the extended version of hungry like the wolf, and other remixes on it. I loved those versions too. At that time,… Read more »

This is probably my favorite Duran Duran song, but I have to say I don’t understand why the first 16 seconds exist on the 12″ mix. They sound sickly and their voices just don’t match in key with the music. The 12″ mix intro is using either a backing vox track or another cut of the lyrics but it just sounds awful if you ask me. If you listen to the single version of those lyrics, the piece sounds 100x better. Regardless, the mix was great after the 16 second mark and is more of a dub than a full… Read more »

Fantastic post Paul for the upcoming Halloween weekend! I’m also jazzed for this twelve’s B-Side. No other month is more atmospheric than October. I’m really excited that All Hallow’s Eve is on a weekend. Will try to celebrate the holiday the best I can.

Paul and everyone, have a bewitchingly happy, healthy and, most of all, safe Halloween!!!

Jeff

I love “Union” I remember the single when it came out. I rushed out and the 7” after I saw the video. And then later the 12” later on loved the backup singers as they open the track. Thanks for sharing.
