Duran Duran – RIO (Original US Album Mixes) (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of ‘RIO’ I decided to transfer the bonus 12″ that was included with the 2014 remastered vinyl edition of ‘RIO’. This bonus 180 gram 12″ contains the David Kershenbaum US album remixes that were originally released On Harvest/Capitol records ( ST-12211) in November 1982. These mixes were also issued on the remastered CD as well, but I found the remastering to be a bit under whelming. I hope you enjoy these vinyl transfers.

Duran Duran re-entered Air studios in London to embark on their second LP, eventually titled ‘RIO’. Recorded during January and February of 1982, the LP was released in May of that year to great success everywhere except the US.

As many of you have noticed, the ‘RIO’ album is somewhat different depending on where you are listening to the vinyl version or CD. In fact there are several variations of each.

The successes at that time of mini-LPs by Missing Persons, Thomas Dolby and Duran Duran, prompted Capitol Records to change the marketing strategy of the group from that of New Romantics to a dance band.

Duran Duran’s ‘CARNIVAL’ remix EP was released in the US in September of 1982 to great success. DJs around the country began to play the remixed dance versions of the ‘RIO’ album tracks. Apparently, the previous mixing on ‘RIO’ didn’t fit the US market, and at the invitation of Capitol Records North America, proceeded to have the album reworked. Being pleased with the remixes already done on ‘My Own Way’ and ‘Hold Back The Rain’, the band, with the approval of Capitol, once again enlisted the help of David Kershenbaum.

The ‘remixed & remastered’ North American LP was released on the Harvest label in November of 1982, and has a matrix number ST-1-12211-Z13-REI #1. It was sent out with a blue sticker noting its difference. No Kershenbaum remix credit is to be found, neither on the inner sleeve nor on the label for Side A. Thus, the labeled timings of the tracks are incorrect and simply carried over from the previous version.

‘Rio’, which was remixed into a 6:39 Night Version by Kershenbaum, was not only edited down for the second American LP (clocking in at 5:24), it is also different in the way the saxophone is mixed. The version of ‘My Own Way’ was taken from the original UK LP, and by altering the lyrical structure and sequence of song segments; Mr. Kershenbaum created a 4:29 masterpiece, which can also be found on the US ‘CARNIVAL’ mini-LP.

Collectors should note that before the Limited Edition of the album came out in 2009, the David Kershenbaum mix of ‘Lonely In Your Nightmare’ could have been found only on the second and third versions of the American vinyl LP. ‘Hungry Like The Wolf’ appears on the second US version as a remixed ‘album’ version, which was also issued in December of 1982 on the American 7″ single re-release, and ‘Hold Back The Rain’ appears as a slightly edited version of the Carnival Remix both developed by David Kershenbaum.

-with special thanks to Ansgar Thomann, Tom McClintock, Alan De Feyter, Andreas Tjornehoj, Kenneth Sausville, Gabby, Igor Pryazhin, Peter Brinkhof, Guido Gilgen and Brian Tobin.

Appreciate you sharing this. I’ve got My own Way, Lonely in Your Nightmare and Hold Back The Rain that I ripped from my 1982 vinyl. Wish I had ripped the whole thing, your 180 gram vinyl sounds nice. Better than the CD

Unfortunately, the email has only just been received in relation to this post. Standard FLAC is better than not having it. Thank you!

I got your e-mail about the 40th anniversary of RIO yesterday! Now I See that it was posted 12 May, That’s weird!

I’m in the same boat as Scott and Erik: the email for this post only arrived 18 hours ago. But then I looked back and saw it was posted on May 12. On May 14 I received an email combining Rio with Carnival and Hungry Like The Wolf. So I have the 24bit, thankfully. Still it’s pretty odd that at least three of us have received it (again for me) just now.

I just got the notice yesterday at 9 AM. 35 hours later the link has expired? Sup with that?

Ouch? Let me clarify that I wasn’t complaining but rather wondering if there was a glitch in the hosting expiring the link so quickly. Then I saw others that posted the same issue with the mail alert going out yesterday for a post from May. Please accept my apology for my poor choice of wording.

Ditto Aaron. Not complaining. Just concerned that it was indicative of a larger issue with the newsletter system as it was not so much a delay as a repeat. A rare glitch in your years of selfless posting, Paul. I will check the site more frequently. Facebook? Nah. A bridge too far. I’m a Jedi not a Sith 😉

Wow, thanks so much for this Paul. I didn’t realise there were even more mixes of Rio. 😀

For me the UK version of the album is the difinitive one, but it’s great hearing all these different variations.

A while ago I looked up where Air Studios was at the time Duran recorded Rio, and was surprised to find it bang in the centre of London, in what is now a ‘Nike Town’ store: https://www.airstudios.com/history/

It’s so funny to think of them recording this exotic masterpiece mid winter in grey, damp inner-city London. 😀

I’m not a serious DD aficionado. I don’t fully understand the significance of the historical details you’ve included in the description.

But I do appreciate the time and care required for your preparation of the daily uploads. Yours is a labor of love, with the serious listener in mind, but with an all-inclusive fanbase.

Thank you, PaulT, for providing a safe atmosphere where neophytes (like myself) can enjoy some classic 80s sounds & re-experience some sweet memories.

Thanks for these, and the detailed background! Fascinating stuff. I must’ve had LP version 3 (US), because the first (and second) time I bought the CD, the original mixes rubbed me wrong – they weren’t my originals. I got the same CD you have, with my originals, but I’m very glad to hear these. You’re right about its status, or needed status, as a genuine classic album. I was very glad to see it included in the BBC’s Classic Albums series, properly set alongside Joshua Tree, Graceland, Rumours, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Pet Sounds and Dark Side of the Moon,… Read more »

Thanks for these Paul. This is excellent. I’ve used that page on many times to get my head around the complications of the Rio album.

One point if I may. The US 2014 issue is not a 2014 remaster. It uses the 2009 remaster and this double vinyl was originally issued in Europe then 920090…so this is a recut of that. Just clarifying for all as your wording could suggest it was a 2014 remaster which I’m wasn’t your intention.

Another fantastic one from Duran Duran! I had the U.S. album originally and I didn’t learn until a couple of years later that the UK version of the album had different mixes. Of course, I then had to track down a copy of the UK LP… Anyway, thanks for posting this!

hi paul, thanks for going with the ‘rio’ theme. this album was amazing, and i got the final (version 3) of the album, so it had these mixes on them. now, i have to buy this 2xlp version also. another one to add to the list. i really wore this album out by playing it so much. the cd remasters were not so good either. so its great to have these rips. i also have rio on 8 track tape, and reel to reel (but its not master quality). i also have several foreign versions, including a blue korean cover,… Read more »

Love this, was listening to these this weekend. Back before all of this stuff got reissued, I transferred my cassette of these mixes to good effect, as a clean original vinyl copy of this version is more rare than one might think…. and yes there are so many variations and most used copies were played relentlessly by their previous owners. These were my default versions and I only began to understand something was up when I got the CD of this album in the mid 90’s and it was “all wrong”. Thanks Paul!

Awesome! My sister had Rio on cassette, so when I made my “copy” I had to use a pink reel TEAC Sound 52 cassette to fit it as it wouldn’t fit onto half a 90 minute cassette like normal albums! It wasn’t until years later when I got the CD (that was the non-remixed version) I was befuddled… what is it shorter? I wondered… why do some of the songs sound different? Etc. There is a website dedicated to Rio and all it’s variety albums and singles wise and it’s a lot! LOL! I’ve a proud owner of the remixed… Read more »

Wow what a treat!! Thanks so much for the Duran Duran two-fer! Yes the 40th anniversary (can’t believe it) is a big reason to celebrate. And thanks for helping us completists sort out the many (and some unidentified) mixes of the Rio tracks, lol.
