BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
Originally posted June 17, 2014
“I Don’t Want Your Love” is the seventeenth single from Duran Duran and the first single from the Big Thing album. It was released on September 1988. As with the album, the band’s name was rendered on the artwork as Duranduran.
“I Don’t Want Your Love” both debuted and peaked at number 14 in the UK, but did much better in the rest of Europe, especially in Italy where it spent six non-consecutive weeks at number 1, and was the best-selling single of 1988 in that country. It also did very well in the U.S., reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
In the UK a promo 12″ includes the dub mix of “I Don’t Want Your Love”, which was unreleased elsewhere until 1999’s Strange Behaviour remix collection (which strangely didn’t use the lead 12″ mix entitled “Big Mix”).

Thanks for this, Still looking for a rip of all the “Electric Barbarella” promo US 12 inches …
Wow! Thanks for the Duran Duran love you’ve shown on your blog. Hoping you’ll finish the set off in the future (you’re nearly there).
Looking forward to more because your rips have better dynamic range than the official CD singles Box and it’s reissues. With such clean transfers your rips are as close as we may get to reference quality so please do keep it up.
Thanks Paul!
Hi Pault,
Great post!, Duran Duran is my favorite band.
Please cold you help me with this request…Clik – Que te pasa (remixes) .
Thanks a lot and congratulations for you excellent site.
Chers 🙂

It’s not often a song can be described as perfect… but this most certainly is!
BIG THING for me is by far the best (and most totally amazing) Duran Duran album!
The Big Thing Tour was also the first time I saw Duran Duran live – first row centre! Incredible!!!!!!
….so I was just digging out some Duran tracks to listen to and found some old Go West tunes! I can’t find anything of Go West on here! Such a shame… it must be a mistake 🙂
Paul,
Excellent post and masteribg as always. I was working this record in the late fall of 1988 in New England markets – I remember real excitement from clubgoers and long time DD fans alike. A legitimate hit all around despite the lukewarm response from the entertainment press. On the BTG site you have faithfully returned to light many such truly popular hits that the mainstream sentiment has forgotten, We who were there know which wwre hits and which were not! Great appreciation for your work.
September 1988…..I was listening to the UK Top 40 on Radio 1 and Duranduran entered the charts, I think it went straight in at number 14 and I didn’t know they had released any new material, so a maximum big surprise. I taped the Top 40 every Sunday on the same cassette and taped over it the following week, “I Don’t Want Your Love” continuously played all week on my boombox until Saturday when buying the 7″ and 12″ plus the 12″ Limited Edition Etched Disc (Simon, Nick and John outside the Unisphere in New York City). Later on I… Read more »
Hi, John I have fond memories of this 12″ release too I also bought the etched 12″ which was an import here in the USA plus I had the US 12″ single and of course this promo. I was doing a lot of clubbing when this song was released and remember it filling the dance floor. 🙂
Love this song I remembering going and buying this 12″ in Summer 1988 with a bunch of other 12″ s. Always thought that this was DD’s best dance song it was hot it was played on all the radio stations from POP to RnB. This was a mean remix by Shep Pettibone who still is a remix genius. Thanks posting.
I agree Robert this song is and was hot it got massive play on US radio. Sadly I never hear it anymore.
Simon wants you to back it up.
Back it up! Back it Up! LOL 🙂
Thanks for the Rip. I still have my 12″ with the etched picture b-side.
You’re welcome. I have that 12″ too 🙂
Many thanks for this jem! Of course i had the original rip but i take your word for it that this new rip 3.5 years later is superior! Is it just better because of the needle? Loving the 2 ‘Love weeks’!
Why don’t you compare the two and see if it sounds any better to you Neil. The needle does have some to do with it. I think I got a new turntable since then too 🙂
From someone who didn’t even realise the first release of New Order’s ‘Singles’ was plagued with bad transfers, i doubt i’d realise any difference myself. Of course it finally came out again over a decade later where those bad transfers were brought to light mcuh to my surprise! I’ll give it a go though!
Thanks Paul! Just sending you a note via your blog. Taking a break from FB. Miss your daily posts, well, that and of course the music. I’ll get back in the swing of things when matters cool down…lol! Best to you.
Hey Robert I have been missing you on FB but hey I understand completely. Sometimes all the negativity and everyone trying to speak their minds can get a bit heavy. Thanks for coming here though to say hello 🙂
hey paul, i figured duran duran would come around again.. i lost interest in duran duran after seven and the ragged tiger. there were a few ok songs on notorious, but they really lost their way after that. big thing, was actually quite a mess of an album. the singles were ok, but most, like this song, were quite average. the remixes were ok, big thing as a lead single, all she wants is, was fun, too late marlene was a limited release. and then this followed by do you believe in shame? it was a very experimental era for… Read more »
I always like the Big Thing album and loved how Duranduran were forging forward with new ideas. I don’t think “Big Thing” got a full single release I believe it only made a promo 7″. “I Don’t Want Your Love” was the first single followed by “All She Wants Is” which has got some really great promo mixes that I will be posting in the near future. As always thanks for you insight it’s appreciated 🙂
Thanks, Paul! Yes, the Dub is clearly my favorite on this 12″. Building on your comment of one of the best Dubs in your eyes, here are some of my 80’a favs: The Cars – Hello Again (Dub Version) Information Society – What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy) (What’s On Your Dub Mix) Debbie Gibson – Shake Your Love (Bad Dubb Version) Exposé – Dub Of No Return Exposé – Come Dub With Me Sweet Sensation – Never Let You Go (Oh Oh Omar Dubb) Sweet Sensation – Take It While It’s Hot (Only Omar’s Dub) Actually, since I’m writing,… Read more »
I have those singles on my list Fred.
Man Paul, you AGAIN! do us such a service!! Thank you for re-ripping this one. And that dub, is to die for!! Your site is chock full of KILLER DUB MIXES that are so well done by you for fidelity and also for giving the full credit listings of the individuals behind their construction. I so relish the talents by The Latin Rascals and Omar Santana along with the other “Editors Supreme” from the 1980’s. Thank you for your commitment on bringing them back into light for audiences very familiar with them but for new ears and future ears as… Read more »

Thanks Paul. Think the dub mix is better.
Me too Omar 🙂
PAUL!!! For me, this is when I really started paying attention to Duran Duran. I did like the earlier output, but with the debut of this song, my love affair for the band really started to take off!! I loved this funky direction the band was heading into. And, well, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, but my first time at a strip club had this song playing while the dancer did her very best burlesque (blush!). Shep Pettibone was on a roll with so many awesome dance mixes and I couldn’t help but be enraptured. I even own the… Read more »
LOVE the “Dub Mix” so much never understood why it wasn’t issued on the standard 12″ singles and only made it to the 12″ promo. One of the best Dub’s in my opinion 🙂
