Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982
“Hungry Like the Wolf” is a song by the British new wave band Duran Duran. Written by the band members, the song was produced by Colin Thurston for the group’s second studio album Rio. The song was released in May 1982 as the band’s fifth single in the United Kingdom. It reached no. 5 on the UK Singles Chart, and received a gold certification by the British Phonographic Industry.
The music video for “Hungry Like the Wolf” was directed by Russell Mulcahy and filmed in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Although the band initially failed to break into the US market, MTV placed the “Hungry Like the Wolf” video into heavy rotation. Subsequently, the group gained much exposure; the song peaked at the number 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1983, and Duran Duran became an international sensation. The video won the first Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 1984.

I remember when “Hungry Like The Wolf” was making the rounds of various FM radio stations. The serious conniptions being experienced by the “Upright Citizens Brigades” of the time. Oh, my! We didn’t grow up watching MTV. We were so far out in the rural area that we didn’t even have that newfangled contraption everybody was talking about: Cable TV! How did we ever survive w/o 500 channels? Until I could finish high school and escape into the Army, there were 3 constants which helped me survive the rural, redneck Hee-Haw hell I was stuck in : I had a… Read more »
Thank you for sharing such a great memory with us Muff Diver 🙂
Thank you for making this (and others) available!
Heads up: The first track filename is misspelled in both packages. 🙂
Thanks for letting me know. I also forgot to completely tag the 24bit package. Guess my mind was still on vacation 🙂
Glad you’re back and I hope you had a great vacation! “Hungry Like the Wolf” is one of those iconic songs that truly defines its era. The video playing constantly on MTV was something I watched every time I saw it. I was in high school when this came out, and I’m feeling very, very, very old knowing that this was 40 years ago!
I know exactly how you feel David. I was 13 years old when this was released and remember all my girlfriends crushing on John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. I am feeling the sting of old age too my friend 🙂
Welcome back Paul! I swear you read my mind as I was thinking of this exact single recently. I do have the US 7″ in my collection, but yours will be pristine quality!! Thanks and I hope you had a nice, relaxing vacation.
Thank you, Retro Hound. This single is one of my favorites even though it is not the rarest of the bunch. I hope you enjoy it 🙂
RIO is my favourite Duran Duran album, and I have the UK vinyl version in a plastic protective sleeve, displayed on my shelf, plus the many CD releases.
Hungry Like The Wolf is still catchy as it was 40 years ago, I especially love that Jupiter 8 arpeggiator.
Great post Paul and it’s great that Duran Duran have been nominated for the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I’ve read that Simon has spoken to Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo, who will also be there.
Many Thanks, John.
Thank you, John. I am very excited about their nomination 🙂
I am super excited about this! Thank you!
You’re welcome, Conner 🙂
Thanks for this! This song has so many tweaked versions it’s insane! As does a lot of Rio, I think there are 3 different US pressings of the album! Love DD!
You’re welcome, ING 🙂
Thank you so much for making it available
You’re welcome, Denilson Cardoso 🙂
hi paul, welcome back. hope you had a good time on your vacation. i love this song. its what introduced me to the band. good time to look back on their 40th anniversary, and soon their induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. i bought the 7 inch, but mind didn’t have a cool picture sleeve. now i have to go back, and buy a copy off discogs, good thing they are pretty cheap. there are so many versions, and variations, and releases for this song. the american audience just didn’t get it, until about the 3rd release,… Read more »
I always loved “Hold Back The Rain” would have been a great single. I hope you enjoy this one 🙂
OH yesss, Hold Back The Rain, especially the “night” versions, I think there are 2 slight variations, ROCK. SHOULD. HAVE. BEEN. A. SINGLE!
Welcome Back, Paul
While I have this one in my growing collection and love it, it was trash. Nice for me to find a good copy to add in. Thanks for the redo.
Mike
You’re welcome, DJ Veteran 🙂
Welcome back Paul!! Gosh, I’ve missed you too. Hope your vacation was fun and exciting.
Thanks for another cool 7-inch edition to your site. Love hearing such things because sometimes they are a lot different than album versions.
Again, I’m so glad you’re back. You were definitely missed!!
Jeff
It’s good to be back, Jeff. I missed you guys 🙂
