Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985
“All She Wants to Do Is Dance” is a song written by Danny Kortchmar and performed by Don Henley, co-lead vocalist and drummer for Eagles. It was released as the second single from Henley’s second studio solo album, Building the Perfect Beast (1984), and was Henley’s sixth solo single overall. It was one of Henley’s most commercially successful singles, peaking at No. 9 on Billboard Hot 100 and also became his third song to top the Top Rock Tracks chart.
The song critiques the US intervention in Central America, particularly in the then-ongoing Contra War, in which the Reagan administration funded the right-wing rebel group Contras to overthrow the socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front government in Nicaragua.
Backing vocals for the song was provided by Patty Smyth of the band Scandal, and Martha Davis, lead singer of the Motels.
When Kortchmar was asked about the song, he said, “I had the groove and the music going. That record was made back when the technology had just started to really take over in music. I had one of the first Yamaha DX7s, which was a keyboard that was used a ton in the ’80s, but we ended up luckily getting one of the first ones in the United States. It’s a synthesizer keyboard, and I used it to get that sound that you hear the record starting with.”

Thanks for this Paul !
Oh wow! Thank you for adding the “Remix Edit”! YOU ROCK!
Paul, thanks for including the superior 7″ edit/remix version that got all the airplay. Worth mentioning is the promo 12″ you used with the fake news cover, PRO-A-2253 (https://www.discogs.com/release/3302687-Don-Henley-All-She-Wants-To-Do-Is-Dance-Remix-Edit) It has the great lyrics worth reading on the cover. It plays to people who have their heads stuck in the sand who prefer to ignore today’s news. The story of the club next to Geffen’s offices is comedy gold!
I always love these remixes of songs by artists who don’t normally have remixes!
Thank you Paul!! My favorite Don Henley solo hit! Yes The Boys Of Summer was the bigger hit, but this one was really HOT and set him miles from his Eagles sound. Some of us remember this song in the movie Real Genius 🙂 The Extended Dance and the Dubb remixes really brought out a new twist in the song without losing the essence of the original. And I can’t thank you enough for the bonus Remix Edit, also previously unavailable on CD or digitally!
Unexpected and appreciated!
hi paul, what a surprise. did not expect to see this track come up. and i actually own it, and like it to. it was a very different style for him, and very new wave sounding. don henley as part of the eagles was a major group for me in the 70s, and they quite the legacy. so his solo work was quite different at times. i really enjoyed the sound of these remixes too. however, the legacy of the eagles, as a rock band is coming to a close, as they going on another retirement tour. so this might… Read more »
Thank you very much for an excellent transfer Paul!!
I do not want to sound ungrateful of course, but would it be possible to separate these out into a promo posting rather than bundle them together? You do scan beautiful cover art you know!! 🙂
Thanks in advance Paul
Nubben
Oh wow, thank you so much – having the mixes in such quality is a treasure. Seriously.
In fact, I probably haven’t heard the remix edit since it was on the radio in 1985.
One question – I remember reading that the remix/edit is actually a slightly different mix than the 45 mix – can anyone confirm or deny that?
Hi DavidLG971, as an owner of both this remix/edit from the US 12″ Promo and the US 7″ single, I can confirm they are identical. Great mix, sounds fantastic, especially on the 12″.
Thank you so much for this great remix.Your site is excellent.
BTW Does anyone know if there is a difference between the Remix Edit and the album version? Sounds the same to me
There are subtle differences…the Remix edit has Don saying “hugh!” at 0:04 and also there is a cymbal (every easy to here in beginning). Near the end of the song it differs slightly.
Wow so for me this was another overplayed in the 80’s track I came to appreciate later in life! You’re on a roll! The fact that Martha Davis sang on this & John Luongo did the remix are facts that I didn’t know but make me excited for this mix! If you got any Martha Davis / The Motels rare stuff I’d be super excited for that! When they finally issued Apocalypso in 2011 it was such a treat!
Many thanks Tom in Oz
You’re welcome mate 🙂
Superb! Loving the 80s-classic rock direction! Did Henley ever release a 12 inch for his other classics? Like Sunset Grill, Dirty Laundry, Boys of Summer? I’m too lazy to search, but anyway, thank you again Paul!
This was the only remix the other songs were already long in their album versions so there are edits of those tracks.
No, however, I have remixes of Boys Of The Summer, All She Wants To Do Is Dance, and Dirty Laundry that were remixed by a dj that does fantastic remixes and re-edits. If you or anyone want to check them out, let me know and I will put a link. All that I ask is that if you like them, please go to his site and support him.
There was only a 7″ single edit authorized for “Boys”. “Dirty Laundry” had NO officially sanctioned edit as Henley refused to allow Elektra to cut it down. Neither was remixed. So we did our own edit of “Laundry” as it went on for 5 minutes. We played the LP version of “Boys”, though. “ASWTDID” is a very unique exception to the rule involving edits or remixes involving any current or ex-Eagle, managed by Irving Azoff after the furor over the 3:25 edit of The Eagles’ “Best Of My Love”. I have this at the top of my list of all-time… Read more »
OOOOOH! I love this song and the remixes! I never bought the 12″, sadly. Thanks so much, Paul! So many great pieces to this…it’s 45RPM so better quality than 33 1/3! Luongo did the mixes! And thanks for the remix edit from the promo! I think I’ve hit my daily quota of explanation points! Thanks so much again, Paul.
You’re welcome, Fred I know you have been wanting this one for a while 🙂
This week is pure fire, Paul!!!!!! Pop bliss dance version style. Love John Luongo’s mixes!!! Can’t thank you enough!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome 🙂

You’re welcome 🙂
What a treat! Love this! Never released on CD, and your transfers are excellent, Paul! Thank you for the bonus “Remix Edit” as well, which was actually the 45/7″ version and again never released on CD.
You’re welcome, Jason 🙂
