“Potential New Boyfriend” is a song written by Steve Kipner and John Lewis Parker, and recorded by American entertainer Dolly Parton. The song peaked at number 20 on the U.S. country singles chart. It was released in May 1983 as the only single to be released from Parton’s album Burlap & Satin. The song was also popular in discos and dance clubs, and in addition to the standard 45 RPM single, an extended-play dance remix single was released. The single was also accompanied by one of Parton’s first music videos, which was directed by Steve Barron.
The record is notable in being Parton’s first song to be more successful on a chart other than country music, peaking at number 13 on Billboard magazine’s Dance Chart.

Do you happen to have the 12″ of Millie Jackson’s “Something You Can Feel”? I just picked it up from eBay but I’m currently lacking a record player, so I won’t be able to listen to it until I get a new one. Anyway, if you’ve got it, I’d love if you uploaded it for us!
Dolly was robbed of a pop hit when Top 40 radio failed to support this record. It has a killer hook and should have been one of the biggest songs of Summer ’83. Like a lot of Dolly’s pop records, it charted country but was not a country sounding record. Her cover of “Save The Last Dance For Me” charted 3 Country but deserved the same position at Top 40 just for being one of the best techno records of the 80s.
i totally agree this should have been a pop hit. Also of note it was written by Aussie Steve Kipner who had previously written huge 80’s hits for Olivia Newton-John “Physical” and “Twist Of Fate”.
I’d say that was taken into consideration when deciding to record this song. Dolly is well known for her shrewd decision making, especially when it came to the business of crossing over to pop.
