Pure pop-disco heaven from America’s favorite siblings — Donny & Marie Osmond! Today’s Disco Friday spotlight shines on their glittery, feel-good groove “On The Shelf,” a rare 12″ promo single released in 1978 on Polydor Records.
This infectious tune marked a key moment in Osmond history: it became the final song by any Osmond to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 during the 1970s, peaking at #38. While disco was ruling the airwaves and the Osmonds’ chart reign was winding down, Donny and Marie took one last dazzling swing at pop radio—and it stuck.
Originally featured in the duo’s 1978 big-screen misfire Goin’ Coconuts, “On The Shelf” was a highlight in an otherwise forgettable film. The movie bombed at the box office, effectively ending their Hollywood hopes. Ironically, around this same time, Marie Osmond was offered the lead role of Sandy in the smash hit Grease—but turned it down, reportedly uncomfortable with the film’s message of “tarting yourself up to get the guy.” She passed on Grease… but said yes to Coconuts.
Still, the late ’70s were prime time for the duo, thanks to their hit ABC variety series Donny & Marie, which ran from 1976 to 1979 and cemented their place in pop culture. And while the movie fizzled, “On The Shelf” stood on its own as a tightly produced disco-pop nugget—full of sweet harmonies, swirling strings, and that unmistakable Osmond charm.
🕺 The 12″ promo release contains the same version on both sides—but it’s become a collectible oddity for disco DJs and Osmond completists alike.
Both Donny and Marie would go on to future chart success—Donny with a surprise pop comeback in 1989–90, and Marie hitting the country charts in the mid-‘80s—but “On The Shelf” remains their glittering farewell to the disco decade.
The track duration on the label is incorrect. The actual track time is 4:17.

Hello Paul! I’m amazed to see nobody tell you any mention about the Steve Voice’s version (than I love like crazy and It’s really difficult to find). Do you have it?
THANKS !!!
Hey DJ Paul and Song and Dance – I was inspired by your convo to make my own edit of a 8:11 extended version of On the Shelf… enjoy! https://youtu.be/YUIauqUgSEg
I played this yesterday and I want ALL the BTG family to know what a FANTASTIC job you did, Lee!!! As YouBoob has so many “fanboy” edits, remixes, DES creations and such, I kept waiting to hear a glitch, bad overlay, or SOMETHING lame. No such thing. Your remix is PERFECT!!! I don’t say that often. Usually there are artifacts on many fan made posts, but not with yours. It’s ready to be pressed to a 12” PRO for the retro-disco crowd. I’d love to hear Paul’s response as well. It’s worthy of a separate post on BTG!
With the recently announced reissue of the failed first album by an unknown duo in 1973, Buckingham-Nicks, this just underscores how lame Polydor was in the ’70s where that album went nowhere and was deleted. Now 52 years later it’s finally being reissued on CD and vinyl; one of the most desired CDs of all time after Queen and The Beatles’ catalogs finally were issued on CD, years after the format debuted. Polydor was known in the music circles as a label who couldn’t recognize or promote a hit if it fell in their laps. Gloria Gaynor, Johnny Bristol, Donnie… Read more »
It’s good to know I wasn’t the only one here watching Donnie & Marie on Friday nights with my family. Such a great time for TV – just feel good entertainment for the whole family. And as much as I love Grease (and ONJ was just perfect as Sandy), I can respect Marie’s decision to pass on it. She clearly sacrificed a movie career, but she stuck to her values. No wonder Donnie & Marie was such wholesome entertainment. Thank you Paul!! I hope you, Jeff, Song_and_Dance, ING and everyone else have a boogietastic weekend!
Hey Retro Hound, It really was such a great time for TV—gathering around on a Friday night with the whole family, no streaming, no second screens—just feel-good entertainment we could all enjoy together. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one soaking it all in back then! And I totally agree about Marie—while Grease was a massive opportunity (and ONJ was perfect), I really admire that she stayed true to her values. That choice says a lot about who she was, and it’s a big part of why Donny & Marie remains such a wholesome and iconic part of that… Read more »
I remember when Donny & Marie Osmond would be on TV in the 1970s, Idon’t actually remember this song, but it’s got a nice catchy lyrics Paul, great line with “Gave you my heart and you took it that day”.
Have you got the 12″ of Was (Not Was) “Shake Your Head” (1992) with Ozzy Osbourne & Kim Basinger, Please.
Hey Paul,
Thanks so much! Yeah, Donny & Marie were everywhere on TV back then—it was hard to miss them! Even though this song flew under the radar for some, it really does have those classic, catchy pop lyrics that sneak up on you. That line “Gave you my heart and you took it that day” is simple but hits just right.
Glad you enjoyed it—and thanks for listening!
—Paul
P.S. I currently do not have the “Was (Not Was)” single; I would have to purchase a copy on Discogs from an overseas seller.
Ozzy & Kim?? Wow. How did that one slip past me? I’d love to hear it as I am a fan of Was (Not Was) going back to “Wheel Me Out” on Ze Records.
I had the 8-track of Goin’ Coconuts so this is a sweet post, thanks Paul! Plus the movie is a fun bad watch, not to be taken too seriously…
An 8-track of Goin’ Coconuts—now that’s awesome! 🙂 Total time capsule. And I completely agree—the movie is peak “so bad it’s fun,” especially if you go in with the right mindset. Just sit back, laugh, and let the ‘70s wash over you.
So glad this post brought back some sweet memories—thanks for sharing!
—Paul
Growing up, I loved the Donny & Marie show! I was always there on a Friday night at 8 o’clock with my entire family watching the program together. Us kids on the weekend would sometimes pretend we were Donny and Marie singing country and rock and roll. We sang songs from AM radio that were popular at the time. I remember when this song hit Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 program because I used to write down all the songs. Sad this never got any bigger than #38, but I really liked it. Like Song_and_Dance below, I do wish there… Read more »
Hey Jeff! Thanks so much for sharing that—it brought a big smile to my face. I can totally picture you and the family gathered around the TV on Friday nights—Donny & Marie was such a big deal back then, and part of what made the late ‘70s so special. I love that you and the other kids would perform your own mini-variety shows—those are the kinds of memories that stick with us forever. And yes! I remember when “On The Shelf” hit American Top 40 too—such a cool moment for them, even if it didn’t climb higher than #38. It… Read more »
Paul, I have been waiting about 6 years for you to re-post this gem…I realised in 2019 I didn’t have your 2011 rip and when I looked the links were by then already dead on your website. I looked everywhere for a rip of it but only ever managed to find a pretty crap mp3 of it. I haven’t even listened to this yet such is my excitement and wish to thank you for helping me, at last, to dump the crappy mp3!
Wow—six years?! That is some serious dedication! I’m so glad I could finally help you ditch that crusty old MP3 and replace it with a proper clean rip. It means a lot knowing you’ve been looking for this one for so long… makes it all the more rewarding to finally have it back in rotation, right?
Hope it lives up to the wait once you hit play—thank you for sticking with me all these years, and for your support! Enjoy every glittery second of it.
—Paul
I´ve always deamt of a 7minute 12inch version b/w instrumental version 🙂 Such a great song, you just HAVE TO dance to it. What a way to send us off into our weekend, Paul. Thank you again and have a great weekend. And you, Jeff, and all you lovely people around.
Hey Song and dance,
You and me both! A full 7-minute 12″ mix with an instrumental on the flip would’ve been pure disco bliss. It’s such a feel-good track—you really can’t sit still when it’s playing. I’m so glad it gave your weekend the perfect lift!
Thank you for always bringing such great energy to the comments. Wishing you, Jeff, and all the lovely folks here a fantastic weekend filled with music and maybe a little living-room dancing
—Paul
That makes 3 of us…But I’m also going to add that my fantasy includes an extended version the 7″ b-side “Certified Honey”…and a disco mix of Marie’s “Angel Love (Heaven Is Where You Are)”, the greatest hit of the 70s that never was.
you two inspired me to make this— enjoy!

So many memories here! My younger sister had the Marie doll and I had Donny. Dressed in purple they were with cool microphones that attached to their hand via a post that made it look like they were wearing rings! Everyone watched their show back then, a little bit country and a little bit rock n roll. It’s actually quite fascinating how variety shows rules the airwaves for a time, because they sure didn’t age well! 😆. Check out the episode with Star Wars cast on YouTube, it’s a gas. And Donny’s late 80’s/early 90’s comeback records are great. I… Read more »
Hey ING, This gave me such a big smile—those Donny & Marie dolls in their purple outfits were everything! And yes, those little microphones that looked like rings… iconic! I love that you surprised your sister with a boxed set—that’s such a sweet full-circle moment. You’re so right about those variety shows—they totally ruled TV for a while, but watching them now is a wild ride! That Star Wars episode is pure gold (and slightly bonkers). And I agree—Donny’s late ‘80s/early ‘90s comeback was seriously underrated. “Soldier of Love” still slaps. Hope you enjoy this virtual spin down memory lane—and… Read more »
OMG. I was sure I was the only person left on earth still occasionally listening to a copy of this song! Fabulous choice for a feature, Paul!
Hey Johnny,
Haha—you are definitely not alone! I love hearing that others still have a soft spot for this one too. It may not be the most obvious disco pick, but it’s such a feel-good gem that totally deserves the spotlight.
So glad you enjoyed the post—thanks for being here and keeping the sparkle alive!
