BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
Re-Rip Remaster
Originally I posted this one back in April 2011. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!
“Swept Away” is a rock-flavored dance song written by Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) with Sara Allen, produced by Hall with Arthur Baker, and recorded by singer Diana Ross for her album of the same name. Ross released the song as a single on the RCA label in 1984.
The song talked about how the narrator thought she was in love with a special person only to find out that she had just been “swept away” after catching her lover cheating on her sending her into a rage and panic.
In the music video, directed by Dominic Orlando in Manhattan and on location in Long Island, Ross is seduced by a Frenchman and falls in love with him only to find out, after arriving unannounced in a bar, that he’s cheating on her with another French girl in a stylized Apache Dance. She then confronts the man hitting him repeatedly, and later fights with the French girl who ends up being knocked out unconscious by the singer. Later in the video, the Frenchman tries to fight his way back into her life only to have Ross accidentally push him from a lighthouse tower into the water. It was one of Ross’ most popular videos, and her first to air on MTV.
The music video was blown up to 35mm for projection during Diana Ross’ live performances at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. There’s also an extended version of the video edited for the 12″ dance club remix.
Arthur Baker had been a club DJ turned remixer who was just breaking into production, and the twelve-inch version became one of Ross’ most successful, reaching number one on the Dance/Disco chart. The single also reached nineteen on the US pop singles chart and number three on the R&B singles chart.

Thanks so much for this! Someone above mentioned Daryl Hall played the guitar solo, but I think it was actually Jeff Beck on this song and “Forever Young” off the album. Someone correct me, if I’m wrong.

Hi
Please provide username and password for downloading the Flac 24 and Flac version.
Thanks so much
Paul,
I was wanting to ask you, do you have “Fight for it” the B-side from ‘Swept Away?’
Thanks Paul. I didn’t have this one.
Since signing with RCA in 1981, Diana Ross had shown a real fondness for rock music; the harder sound hinted at in her 1981 hit “Mirror Mirror” led to the full-on rocker “Fool For Your Love” on Silk Electric and the electric guitar-driven “Up Front” on Ross. That penchant for edgier music continues with this album’s title track, a rock/pop/dance track that features a powerhouse vocal from Diana. The song was penned by Darryl Hall and Sara Allen – and Ross herself contributed the opening spoken verse. The rock tone is set immediately with the urgent drum beat; from there… Read more »
Sorry for being away this past week, Paul.
I had a few medical appointments lined up so wasn’t able to leave comments like I always do.
Looks like BTG maintained its hot action nonetheless, Olivia! Diana! Woof!
I’m glad you did a remaster of this, Paul. Coz I think it’s such an amazing remix! I too hope for more Diana remixes, which are quite lacking on CDs or cyberspace. Besides Pieces Of Ice, I think Touch By Touch and especially Muscles (mmmmm…) have fab remixes too!
Thanks for your music that made my week better!
Glad to see you are back Ric. I hope all went well with your doctor visits 🙂
thanks for the reply. in that case I will redownload! It seems there is no reissue then, since I can also not find it on discogs, not even japanese or so. Just in case you did not know (but I think you do), the Dutch Rodeo Media is reissuing many 12 inch versions in their Dance Classics series? They are at volume 56 or so now. Then there is of course Blanco Y Negro with I Love Disco 80s, and the German 80s Revolution. And of course for vinyl sites like vinylmania also do a good job. It is highly… Read more »
Thanks Martin 🙂
Thank you for this post, it is a repost I believe since I think I had it already. Do you know if there is a cd expanded reissue of Diana Ross that has this extended plus dub version on it?
Yes it is a re-post but I also re-ripped it using newer equipment so it should sound much better than the old rip. No expanded version that I know of.
Loved This one. Paul could u also post a remastered version of Pieces of Ice? Thanks.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
Thank you, Paul! I’ve always thought this was her best RCA single and have fond memories of dancing to it in the ’80s.
You’re welcome Dean I agree with you 🙂
OMG! OMG! Thank you very much for re-ripping this classic Diana Ross track. Your statement on her video “It was one of Ross’ most popular videos, and her first to air on MTV” is soo true. I loved and still do up to this time.
Coincidentally, I was just received an announcement that she will be gracing her San Francisco fans in August. I missed her the last time and I’m definitely not missing her this time.
I’m so swept away by this post. 🙂
MusicdivasSF sounds like a fab show that is coming your way I know Miss Ross will dazzle 🙂
Thank you SO MUCH for re-ripping this one; what a fantastic post! I was looking for this one… you made my day!! 🙂
you’re welcome Gene. Glad I was able to do it 🙂
My Idol and Ultimate Diva…Miss Ross! Thank you for posting this. I feel about Diana the way you feel about Olivia. I’ve been a fan since 1977 and I’ll never stop! Adore the woman.
You’re welcome Timothy. I’ve been an Olivia fan for about the same length of time 🙂
Great job Paul and VERY nice to have this re-rip with the OM30. I love this dance mix and love the instrumental even more. This one rocks, period!
Wouldn’t mind to see some older posts re-ripped again. The whole Streisand section for instance. Long long long not available anymore due to dead links and at that time ripped with an OM10 or 20. Deserves a new treatment soon.
But thanks for this Diana re-rip. Really appreciate it.
Hi Stefano yeah there are about two years worth of dead links mostly 2010 and 2011 due to the Megaupload shut down that happened a year or so ago. Since I post new material daily it’s hard to find time to go back and fix those links. I hope to get round to Barbara soon 🙂
Sounds Fantastic! Can’t wait for it! Thank you 🙂
I hope you do, would be awesome! Can’t wait actually, haha. But you have to promise us to re-rip them for much better quality (and not just fix the link).
Considering the rarity and near-unavailability of all of those old items, I for one wouldn’t quibble if he just re-uploaded all the files that used to be on Megaupload to his new server as-is, and fixed the links accordingly.
Hmmm… So, just how big a donation would it take to persuade you to take a day or two to go back and reupload all the old Megaupload stuff to your new server and fix the links? 🙂
I think it would take more than a couple of days. There are if i’m guessing two or three hundred posts that would need to be fixed. It’s very time consuming and I also would want to add 24bit links to those as well. Most of those files as Stefano mentined were ripped with my old Ortofon 10 or 20 stylus and do not have near the fidelity of my new Ortofon 30 I have also since upgraded the tube in my pre-amd which has also made a huge difference. I think most readers don’t really know how much is… Read more »
Oh, well, I was thinking more in terms of just putting the existing, older files back up as-is, so that at least they would be available in some form, even if they’re not as pristine as what your current rig allows. Believe me, I know how much effort is involved in transferring and cleaning up any analog source; I certainly wasn’t suggesting you could re-rip two years worth of postings in 48 hours! 🙂
O I know you weren’t suggesting that Doctor sorry if it sounded that way. I am planning to start revisiting more of the archives with new updated rips. Hopefully I will do some that you are looking for 🙂
Also I wanted to add that my mood is so great today! Just because today, April, 24 is a Birthday of Barbra Streisand (she is 71). 🙂
Happy birthday Babs 🙂
Thanks for the re-up of this amazing single. The new rip sounds great. Have you ever posted “Pieces of Ice”?
You’re welcome Kookoo don’t think I have ripped that one yet. Hopefully I will get to it soon 🙂
Thank you so much Paul!!! I love Diana’s music. This week on your blog it’s like my holidays for soul. Only my fav singers and music. You are Mister Magic!! 🙂
You’re welcome Spring. You are so thoughtful 🙂
