BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
“Rhythm of the Night” is a 1985 hit single recorded by the American R&B band DeBarge and written by Diane Warren. The song is said to have jump-started the career of songwriter Diane Warren and was the biggest hit recorded by the Motown family singing group.
By 1985, DeBarge had become pop/R&B sensations with mostly ballads making the repertoire of their hit catalog though they were as impressive as live performers with their mixture of their trademark soft ballads and a collection of dance material. Motown Records sought to produce DeBarge with a dance single to give them a bigger crossover success that mirrored that of label-mate Lionel Richie, who like DeBarge, had created his initial fan base on soft songs before the release of “All Night Long”, which included a catchy dance beat influenced by calypso. A similar influence would come in the production of “Rhythm of the Night” which featured more of El DeBarge’s deep tenor with flashes of his trademark falsetto. Richard Perry, the hit producer behind hit recordings for The Pointer Sisters and other artists, was appointed to produce the single with Diane Warren as its writer.
The release of “Rhythm of the Night” coincided with the release of the Motown film, The Last Dragon, which featured the song as part of its soundtrack. The free publicity from the song on its soundtrack and in the movie itself helped boost its popularity. Eventually released as a single, the song produced DeBarge’s biggest success yet with the single reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, number one on the US adult contemporary chart, and number four in the UK singles chart – their only major hit single in the UK – going gold and boosting similar success for its parent album of the same name. The group’s music video of the song gained the group heavy rotation on MTV and BET and was actually the group’s first and last real music video starting a brief period where DeBarge became pop superstars.

any chance for a re-up? Love your stuff! 😀
thank you so much! god bless you
THANK YOU, PAUL. THANK YOU.
I think I remember hearing that the soundtrack version of this song was different than the version that’s on their “Rhythm Of The Night” LP. Does anyone know if this is true? Also did some checking and this song also peaked at #3 in Cashbox, kept out of #1 by “We Are The World” and Madonna’s “Crazy For You”. Great job on this one too, Paul! Thanks!
I think you were thinking of Whitney when you typed the tracklisting. the B-side is actually “Queen of My Heart” according to the scan. For a moment, I thought possibly they wrote and recorded that first. 🙂
oops a typo I was actually listening to Whitney while I was doing my post. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
Same feeling of Ric.. Heart Is Not So Smart and Who’s Holding Donna Now are two of the missed in time hits. Thanks for your precious work.
You’re welcome Erick 🙂
Thanks Paul! I’ve always had a special affinity to this song. I was 14 years old at the time and brings back some nice memories everthing I hear it. Keep up the wonderful work you do!
You’re welcome JC I love bringing the good memories back. Makes me happy 🙂
Not minding this DeBarge “obsession” at all!
Would be a dream if you’ll be able to visit The Heart Is Not So Smart sometime in the future.
Thanks Paul for their biggest hit! TGIF!
The general 80s music fan know them mostly for this, and ballad lovers for Who’s Holding Donna Now. But if one just delve into their Greatest Hits package, one would discover more R&B delights beyond that.
You’re welcome Ric. I will keep a look out for Heart Is Not So Smart. Happy TGIF 🙂
thank u very much Paul!!!!!
you’re welcome Giorgio 🙂
You’re DeBarge obsessed you are!
lol the obsession ends today.
Thanks Paul! Still chilling here in Nashville. 😉
You’re welcome Chwee. Stay cool!
