Dead Or Alive – Something In My House (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

In 1986, Dead or Alive released their third album, Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know, also produced by SAW. The album included one of the band’s best-known songs, “Something in My House”, tonally very Gothic and with a sleeve depicting Pete Burns in front of what appears to be a Satanic altar, featuring an inverted crucifix. A 12″ version of the song, the “Mortevicar Mix”, featured sampling of dialogue from the soundtrack of “The Exorsist” and a sampling from the George A. Romero American movie trailer from his film “Day of the Dead” (1985).

The US 12″ includes four hot mixes. My favoriteis the latin flavored “Flamenco Mix”.

SIDE A:
Something In My House (US Wipe Out Mix – Part 2) 7:18
Something In My House (Instrumental) 5:19

SIDE B:
Something In My House (Mortevicar Mix) 6:55
Something In My House (Flamenco Mix) 4:21

Thanks for this. I still have the U.K. 12″ in the attic even though I can no longer play it. It is my favourite Dead or Alive track.

Big fan of your work but the recent DOA has tipped me over to just say a very big THANK YOU, do you accept submissions? I got an old acetate of some stuff?

My favourite is the Flamenco Mix as well! Love that bit of latin spice! SAW spent a month with DOA to record the Youthquake album and it worked. However, the “Mad Bad & Dangerous To Know” album took six months. And in SAW-time, that is equivalent to six years! SAW had never spent so much time on a record and was very frustrated. SAW wanted to push new barriers but DOA were a nightmare because they didn’t want to do anything new. I think this is why their collaboration stopped thereafter. The album recording was in early 1987 and SAW… Read more »

I’d read about the SAW falling out too which was a shame given the quality of the production on the two albums they worked together on. Personally, I’m glad Dead or Alive decided to stick with what they do best though, glorious, catchy Hi-NRG, and didn’t give in to SAW (kind of ironic that they were trying to push them in a new direction when almost all their own stuff had a very similar, though admittedly infectious, euro-beat sound). I think both Youthquake and Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know are Dead or Alive’s best albums and Nude, which followed… Read more »

Thank you Paul for this fantastic digital transfer.
I have this 12″, Flamenco Mix is my favorite version on this 12 inch. I really like the guitar in it, that’s why I like the album version also. 😉

totally agree here… Flamenco Mix is very cool, very musical. The overall Re-production of the tune is something that DOA flirted with before… Album versions often became remixed or tweaked into a more produced sound for the 12″ release or videos. For instance, “My Heart goes Bang” was totally remixed, revamped vocals, & bares little or no reslembance to the album verion. Album version of “Something in My house” was the US Wipe Out Mix Part 1. Sought out, but never found but only on the album. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that was the way… Read more »

I always wondered what happened to the U.S. Wipeout Mix Part 1 but I don’t think the album version has ever been referred to as Part 1 here in the U.K., not to my knowledge anyway. The album version was never my favorite mix as it always sounded a tad unfinished compared with the 7″ and 12″ mixes. Mortevicar mix is my favourite but I always liked the Flamenco mix as well so it’s nice to hear it again.

I thought the Wipe Out Mix was called part two because My Heart Goes Bang was Wipe Out Mix part One.

Thank you DJPaulT.

I know it’s not often you do 3 posts of the same artist in a row – so 3 of the same song is something of a record. 😀 😀

Are all these 4 mixes vinyl only, BTW?

To the best of my knowledge: The US Wipeout Mix Part 2 appeared in full on the old compilation Hi-NRG Dance Classics Volume 2; an edit of the Wipeout Mix has appeared on a few DoA compilations (including Evolution: The Hits); and the Mortevicar Mix recently appeared on That’s The Way I Like It: The Best of DoA.

Thanks as always Paul. I have a question though… somebody once told me this song was about Morrissey. Does anybody know if there is any truth to this?

I’ve never heard such a thing and I’ve studied Moz pretty closely.

Weren’t they just friends? I don’t think there was any romance between them other than a bit of flirting?
