David Bowie – Loving The Alien (US Ltd. Edition 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

A. Front

C. Gatefold

“Loving the Alien” is a track from the album Tonight by David Bowie. One of two tracks on the album written solely by Bowie, the song was released as a single in May 1985, nine months after the release of “Blue Jean” as a single, and eight months after the release of the album. The single performed well, reaching No. 19 in the UK. Although released as a single in the US “Loving The Alien” failed to chart.

As a demo track, the song was simply called “1”. Bowie said “‘Alien’ came about because of my feeling that so much history is wrong – as is being rediscovered all the time – and that we base so much on the wrong knowledge that we’ve gleaned.” He recorded the demo in Montreux, Switzerland. He would later comment that the production on the song undid the power of the lyric, saying he preferred the demo version.

Bowie performed the song on his 1987 Glass Spider Tour. On the Reality Tour in 2003 and 2004, he again performed this song, but this time a stripped down version with only Bowie on vocals and Gerry Leonard on guitar; in the film of the tour, Bowie remarked that this arrangement was perhaps “the way it should have always been done.”

Thank you sooo much for every one of these Bowie posts! I have every one of them on original vinyl, but it’s SUCH a pleasure to be able to have them digitally now! Thank you DJPaul!

Great rip, Paul. I remember trying to do my UK copy some time ago and it had so much noise and so many snap, crackle and pops that I lifted the needle halfway through and gave up!

🙂

Wow, it is so good to see this; such a rarity. I don’t know how well this song charted but it is one of my favorite Bowie tracks I always loved seeing the video on MTV. Thank you, this is a real treat!

Really fabulous mixes on this 12″ , Alien sounds so timeless, so melancholic, so appropriate for this sad occasion!
While mixing Don’t look down, obviously many joints were handed around xD!

Hey Paul, I echo what BE.D12” says above: “You’re a Starman!!!” You’re really putting me into orbit Paul with these twelves. It shows so much love you have for David and the records he’s done. You make us all so happy with your generosity and phenomenal ripping skills Paul. I bask in the glory of your 12-inches DjPaulT. You’re our “Sonic Stud” and we love getting served up right in our ear-holes. Man, we’re all so lucky.

Savoring the sweet sonics!!

Thanks for this, Paul. It was the standout track on a disappointing album. So happy I got to hear him perform the stripped-down version live.

I did at the time, but I don’t think it’s aged well, largely due to the production.

Many thanks DJPAUL!

Hope you will re-rip also “Blue Jean” And “Tonight”,
and then I’ll be waiting for “This is not America”, “Absolute beginners”
and the 12″ of all the singles from the “Never let me down” album (if you got it).

Such an amazing Bowie-serie of 12″.

You’re a Starman!!!

Bowie did say during the Reality tour that the 2003 version was “the way it should have always been done,” but at least he had Frampton on guitar when performing it for Glass Spider audiences!
