Daryl Hall & John Oates – Possession Obsession (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“Possession Obsession” was the fourth single taken from the twelfth studio album “Big Bam Boom” by Daryl Hall & John Oates. The song was a departure from their typical sound with lead vocals by John Oates instead of Daryl Hall.

The music video was directed by Bob Giraldi, who also did Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield.” It stars John Oates as a cab driver in New York City. At one point, we see two men holding hands in the back of the cab, which is something rarely seen on TV at the time.

“Possession Obsession” peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 6, 1985, after spending twelve weeks on the survey. The song also reached #42 on the Canadian singles chart.

Track A2 is a “Dub Mix” but is not listed in the sleeve or record labels.

Repeated thanks for doing this single Paul, especially for the flip-side track, “Dance On Your Knees.” To me, this is really an Arthur Baker and Latin Rascals track. I remember reading at the time that when the Hall/Oates album “Big Bam Boom” came out, this track was only a brief introduction to “Out Of Touch.” Mr. Baker went on to say that the entire track was really something and it was sad that it didn’t make the record’s cut. Well, thank goodness it was included on a later 12-inch. This song rocks in every crazy rhythm. I always thought it… Read more »

…very good track, but this remix is very similar to an early Arthur Baker single: “Breaker’s Revenge”. 🙂
PS thanks Paul for this good post and Happy Birthday!

Arthur Baker definitely had his signature sound which is why I gravitated towards him. Please check out his “Under The Gun” by Face To Face on Paul’s site for another outstanding Baker production.

ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE ARTHUR BAKER MIXES HERE. LINN DRUM TURNED UP TO 11.

So much detail due to Bob Clearmountain. Best i have heard. Dance on your knees is just such a mess but i love it so much !

Thanks Paul.

Great follow-up from yesterday’s Wang Chung post. I have this 12″ somewhere in my collection, but these rips are a digital lifesaver.

Thanks Paul 🙂

I love Hall & Oates. As far as I know the Dub mix of Possession obsession is exclusive to this release. It’s fine to get it in pristine quality. All the other tracks are included on the great japanese 2-CD edition of “12 inch collection”. Thank you Paul.

Man Paul, you’ve got me going today!! I love these guys and this song too! PLUS!! The “Dance On Your Knees” song has got some fantastic edits on it!! I was so obsessed with Arthur Baker and the Latin Rascals that I had to acquire just about everything I could find. I still am obsessed with them. Thank you so much for doing a proper rip of these songs. And please, more Hall and Oates! I so love their sound and musical output.

Extremely Happy!!

Jeff

Yeah, I love those three tracks, too. And let´s not forget the wonderful remix of the wonderful “Everytime you go away”. Paul Young released a wonderful remake back then but the original is just…well….the original 🙂

I so agree Song And Dance. I know both and I do like Mr. Young’s version, but Daryl Hall and John Oates’ version is my favorite.
