Daryl Hall & John Oates – M·e·t·h·o·d O·f Modern L·o·v·e (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1984

AN 80s AUDITORY ICON!

“M·e·t·h·o·d O·f Modern L·o·v·e” is a song by the American duo Daryl Hall & John Oates. It was released as the second single from their 1984 album, Big Bam Boom. The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1985.

Billboard said that Hall & Oates “pop-r&b style renews its freshness and interest.”

The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 when “Out of Touch” was still on the top of the chart; it debuted at #50 for the week ending December 15. After eight weeks it peaked at #5 staying there for a week; the single remained on the chart for 19 weeks. Curiously, on the January 19, 1985, issue this song was at #21 while the aforementioned Out of Touch was at #22.

One of my first favorites as an early elementary school student, Hall & Oates. I still remember collecting their 7″ singles as 2nd/3rd grader. “You Make My Dreams”, “Kiss On My List”, “Private Eyes” were among my faves as was this tune. Then as a college student working in a record store, I became familiar with some of their 70’s R&B classics like “Sara Smile” and “Rich Girl”. Great stuff! Thank you for sharing this!

Curiously I haven’t heard this since we played it in the ’80s. I didn’t realize it was such a big US hit on 5 charts. You’d think someone in L.A. would play it.

Oh man, so happy to see this! One of my favorite H&O songs. This takes me back to when I was working at Record Bar in College Park, Georgia when this record came out. We sold a ton of it, including me who bought the vinyl! But to have it digitized now, just can’t thank you enough.

This was my first of many Hall & Oates 12-inches. Funny story: the radio dj wanted to play the extended version and played the dub mix by mistake. I was blown away by the mix and the edits, counted the remainder of my allowance, jumped on my bike and rode the 2 miles to the city. Then I had to walk from record shop to record shop (good times!) until I finally bought the record. Happy days! Everything wasn´t better back then but I REALLY miss the numerous record shops we had in the Eighties. Young people will never be… Read more »

One of my favourite singles by Hall & Oates and these mixes by Arthur Baker are some of his best i reckon.

I remember it got into the top 30 in the UK singles chart in February 1985 as i bought the UK 12” at the time.

Thanks Paul 🙂

Thank you for this. Last year I broke down and bought a copy of the Japanese 12″, but I’m sure your rip will blow mine away!!

For me Hall’s vocal performance on this track is the finest male vocal performance of the 1980s; he was at the peak of his abilities on this record. The only other singer I can think of that could hit all the notes and different voices Hall does would be Marvin Gaye.

Even more amazingly, most of Hall’s lead vocal was the first take – as were most of their records.

You are certainly on a roll this week, Paul!!! Thank you from my entire heart for posting this single by Daryl Hall and John Oates!! Arthur Baker was at his height of greatness with production and remix acumen and that is why he (along with John Robie) are my two favorite producers!! And also, the fact that he kept the Latin Rascals around to use their awesome editing skills to make percussive edit solos on his records made this a celebration for me!! The criteria for me when buying records back in the day, was to have their names attached… Read more »
