Cyndi Lauper – True Colors (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986

Celebrating Pride 2021

This post is for all of you who have had the courage to come out live your truth, and be yourself you are an inspiration to so many.

“True Colors” is a song written by American songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. It was both the title track and the first single released from American singer Cyndi Lauper’s second album. It was the only original song on the album that Lauper did not help to write. Released late in the summer of 1986, the song would become a major hit for Lauper, spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her last single to occupy the top of the U.S. chart. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 25, 1986, beating Tina Turner’s “Typical Male” to the top spot. It also peaked at number three in Australia and New Zealand, and number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.

“True Colors” also became a standard in the gay community. In various interviews, Lauper elaborated that the song had resonated with her because of the recent death of her friend, Gregory Natal, from HIV/AIDS. Years later, Lauper co-founded the True Colors Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating LGBTQ youth homelessness.

Powerful song from Cyndi and one of my favourite singles from the 80’s. I love the artwork too.

Thanks Paul 🙂

Paul, I’m stunned by your latest post, but in a good way.
Reading your words, your intentions, the ways you express yourself, inspires me. You’re a good man in a grey, dirty world.
Thank you PaulT, for being you, and for maintaining this blog, your labor of love.

This is funny, Paul. I owe you a beer. But, only you will know what I mean by this.

I saw Cyndi at the Bergen Performing Arts Center here in NJ (3-years ago?) and she still has a great voice. Hopefully our Art Centers will re-open soon. I’m still hoping that DEVO may make a return trip to the NYC area. DEVO and Bill Idol were common shows at Rutgers University in the late 70s / early 80s.

Thanks for a great post!

Thank you for another song that means so much to so many. Paul, your selection from this week and the last are so heartfelt and enjoyable on so many levels. Missed you yesterday and was worried that something might have happened because of the severe weather happening all over the United States. So happy you’re back to continue these very special posts. You and all the music you post makes the world a better and happier place.
