Re-Rip Remaster
Originally I posted this one back in April of 2010. But for those who may have missed it, or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a fresh new rip with my newer Ortofon 30 stylus. This rip sounds way better than the first one. The 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!
“We Don’t Talk Anymore” was a UK number one single for four weeks in August 1979 for Cliff Richard. Produced by The Shadows’ rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch and written by guitarist Alan Tarney it was Cliff Richard’s tenth UK number one and his first since “Congratulations” in 1968.
Coming just before his 40th birthday and just when it was announced that he was to receive the OBE for services to music it cemented his comeback which continued well into the eighties and nineties. The single was his biggest worldwide seller, reaching number one in Germany for five weeks (his only English-language German chart-topper, though he had two German-language number ones there in the 1960s) and reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the United States.
The single sold 5,000,000 worldwide topping the charts in the UK, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Malta and Switzerland.
The song was the sixth video aired on MTV on its launch date, August 1, 1981.

Another rarity – many thanks. Have just discovered these mixes on youtube of Thompson Twins – Nothing in common – really improve the track esp the 7″ remix and Club mix. Do you have them by any chance?

The 70s wasn’t particularly successful for Cliff until the end of the decade with this perfect pop tune!
This one was huge hit for Cliff in 1979, ending the year at #3 in the UK, only behind Art Garfunkel’s Bright Eyes and Blondie’s Heart Of Glass.
I really love the tunes written by Tarney for Cliff. This, Dreamin’, Some People, Wired For Sound, My Pretty One, A Little In Love…all amazing!

Great to have a re-rip Paul! The old rip sounded a bit muffled, especially towards the end. The OM 30 just tracks far better than the 10 or 20.
Although this extended version just repeats a large section of the song, it does contain a new (but short) part which is exclusive to this 12 inch. That makes it an interesting version.
At the end of the 70’s more ‘disco mixes’ were actually only montages, repeating verse and chorus. Other examples: ONJ’s Physical (no eclusive new parts) or Donna Summer’s I Feel Love (idem).
Glad you like the new rip Stefano it is a major improvement. Another example is ONJ’s “Deeper Than The Night” 12″ it just rpeats some parts of the track as well and Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” same thing.
The various filtered “ooooooohs” that come to hard-cut stops at various points are also new to this mix; I just listened to my copy of the original, and they’re definitely not there. I’ve found myself wondering sometimes if the original artists even knew these 12″ mixes were being made, or if it was just something the record company did on their own. Maybe that accounts for why some 12-inches have a significant amount of unique material, and others are mostly just repetitions; for the former ones, the original artist had some involvement in the process; for the latter ones, someone… Read more »

I think it was the younger artists who embraced the extended format, Duran obv, and notably Soft Cell would include extra material, solos and sections.
The interesting thing about the Soft Cell 12″s is that producer Mike Thorne didn’t create extended versions as an after-thought. By the time he was working with Soft Cell, The The and Bronski Beat he was encouraging them all to create full-length extravaganzas from which a 7″ would later be edited. Well, I’ll be dipped… I had no idea there was such a thing as a “long version” of this song, aside from the 4:18 LP cut vs. whatever the radio airplay cut ran to (probably three minutes and change, as was typical of the era). Kind of makes you wonder why this one wasn’t the LP cut to begin with…

This is a good 12″ to own, but I would never (ever) call it “DISCO”. Thanks, anyway, for the 12″ version of this track, Paul, but this is definitely not disco.
you’re welcome George. I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion. The sleeve of the French 12″ even says “Special Disco Mix” on it. I would call it Disco rock.
I think it’s as disco as the Rod Stewart ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?’ Disco Mix and the Ian Dury & The Blockheads ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ Disco Mix – ie it was a fashionable tag for record companies to use at the time for anything that was slightly disco inspired.
Partly, I agree: In the late 70’s everything that got extended was named “disco mix” simply because you would hear it “at the disco(theque)”. That doesn’t make the track “a disco track”. To be disco, there’s got to be a (recognizable) “disco sound”. Now, Rod Stewart’s track HAS a disco sound (after all, it was re-mixed for that purpose by Jim Burgess) and even The Stones’ “Miss You” HAD the disco sound (also re-mixed disco-friendly) and the Ian Dury track is FUNKY as hell. He had a few good singles around this time, Wired For Sound gotta be my personal fave.
This is probably one of my all-time favorite songs. I just love it! And ofcourse his collaborations with ONJ.
The video I think helped make that song such a classic. I went to the shopping mall that he rollerskated around in the video a few year ago, it hasn’t really changed much. 😀

Yes I do have all of the original files. Thing is there is about two years worth of files to re-upload. I would never get to work on new rips if I spent my time re-upping old files. I have fixed files that folks have sent donations to be fixed.
