Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988
Limbo” is a song by English singer Bryan Ferry, the former lead vocalist for Roxy Music. It was released as the third and final single from his seventh album Bête Noire in 1988, and was his twenty-seventh single. The song failed to enjoy as much success as the two previous singles from the album; it peaked at No. 86 on the UK Singles Chart. It also appears in the ill-fated film Big Time, starring Paul Guilfoyle.
The song, like the other singles released from the album (“The Right Stuff” and “Kiss and Tell”), features The Smiths’ lead guitarist Johnny Marr.
The song was co-produced by Patrick Leonard, who was recognized as co-writer and producer of many of Madonna’s songs from the earlier half of her career.
The promotional video for the song was directed by style and fashion guru Michael Roberts, a longtime friend of Ferry. The models are Nathaly Coualy and Regina Monte.

Brooklyn mix was edits by the Latin rascals
Great treat, Paul! I bought this exact 12″ about a month ago, as it was the only one missing from my Bryan Ferry collection (I love all the 12-inches from both “Boys and Girls” and “Bête Noire”) and I had to get the “brooklyn mix” which is a fave. Super-happy it got your treatment! How come you haven’t posted “Kiss and Tell” and “Don’t stop the Dance” yet?
Such a great song. One of my Bryan Ferry favourites. Years ago I created some sort of radio remix from the Brooklyn mix as it is too long for my taste. So, my own edit is my favourite version. 🙂 Thank you so much, Paul. Have a nice weekend.
This is a new listen for me, and it is infectious. I remember you posting his Slave To Love 12” a while ago, which is a favourite of mine.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Many thanks for the rip of another excellent choice you decided to share, Paul. It’s very appreciated.
Bryan Ferry has long been a fave of mine, during recess or free class hours at school in the mid 80s, i often played the tape of Boys and Girls on my walkman, and if i didn’t feel like using headphones, with external speakers.
They didn’t sound as good as what we have now, but at the time it was nice to have them.
Peace,
dj
You’re welcome, Don Julian 🙂
Hello,
I love this track, and especially the drums and bass.
btw, For those who care, it Seems that Universal Music or whatever own the rights, do release some digital Singles of Bryan Ferry back catalogue, including this one, in case.
Check qobuz.com for example for a proper version in FLAC format.
btw, “Bête noire” / instrumental is a very nice romantic track, I must say i prefer this track as an pure instrumental than with Ferry’s vocals.
Many thanks Paul !!! Amazing single from an incredible album!!
You’re welcome, gnihtytterp 🙂
Thanks a lot for this Paul!
You’re welcome, Grant 🙂
I am seriously salivating from my ears (and eyes) over this song and video!! I am a Bryan Ferry fan, but I don’t know much of his oeuvre. This one is brand new to me, Paul, but what a fantastic song this is! And the video, man, it’s so tantalizing!! Equal parts sensual and erotic, I am overwhelmed with risqué thoughts!!! I can’t wait to hear the full 12-inch versions!! Thank you again for this incredible introduction, Paul!! I know today is the anniversary of MTV and am wondering if the video made the playlist back in the day. Michael… Read more »
Thank you, Jeff. I am curious if anyone hears “La Isla Bonita” a bit in the “Brooklyn Mix” which is my fav on this twelve. Bryan Ferry has always been on the cutting edge of music even back during his Roxy Music days. I think you will enjoy this one. there are edits too 🙂
Well, if they didn’t sample the percussion loop from “La Isla Bonita” for the “Brooklyn Mix”, they certainly did a fantastic job recreating it. I also hear Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” with the guitar stabs in the first break (at 2:03 minutes). Either way, what a fantastic remix! I don’t think I’ve heard too many RoxyMusic/BryanFerry 12″ remixes! So, THANK YOU!!!!
And I agree with Jeff: The video is sultry and fantastic!
Thanks so much, Martika!!
Have a great day!!
Jeff
Ooh, edits!!! My favorite!! Thanks, Paul!!!
Jeff
Edits by the Latin rascals only on Brooklyn mix
Hey, thank you so much. Latin Rascals deserve so much credit for innovating and bringing attention to the art of the percussive cut and splice!
Much appreciated!
Jeff
They did play it on MTV and VH1 as is. I remember them mentioning around the time of the premiere that it was directed by someone who worked at Vogue or a similar magazine
Thanks so much, Mischa! I was quite curious.
Jeff
What timing! I have been on a Bryan Ferry kick for about 4 days, so this is perfect. He is one of the rare artists where his remixes take his songs to a new level. Much appreciated.
You’re welcome, Raymond 🙂
Thanks for this Paul. I knew the album versions, but never before heard the 12″ Mixes. Very talented artist is Mr Ferry, and over a very long period of time (in music terms). Just a shame he isn’t a very nice person.. especially to other musicians he’s worked with. Looking forward to hearing these and checking out the videos. Thank you again.
You’re welcome, Jay. I also love his work with Roxy Music, which influenced many new wave bands.
Thank you for this. I have the vinyl and the CD single for this, but the CD single has an edited version of the Brooklyn mix, so it will be good to have the longer version in digital form. 🙂
(btw if you want the edited versions of the Latin and Brooklyn mixes to add to this post, let me know and I will send them your way.)
Thanks, David I think I have that CD here somewhere.
You’re welcome, David I never understood why they edited the mixes for the CD. My favorite mix is the “Brooklyn Mix”.
One of my favorites from the late ’80s. Thank you, Paul!
You’re welcome, Dean 🙂
