“Run to You” is a rock song written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance for Adams’ fourth studio album, Reckless. It was the first single released from the album and is still one of Adams’s most recognizable and popular songs. The song topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has appeared on all of Adams’ compilation albums. The single was certified Gold in Canada in 1985.
“Run to You” was released in October 1984 and became one of the most successful songs from Reckless on the American rock charts and arguably one of Adams most recognizable and popular songs. “Run to You” was released worldwide on October 18, 1984. The song reached the top ten on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and was Adams first number one hit on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and number six on the Billboard Hot 100. “Run to You” reached the top twenty on the Canadian singles chart and remained there for seven weeks. “Run to You” reached the highest Canadian chart positions Adams had attained at the time of release and became his second top twenty single in Canada. “Run to You” was released the following month in Ireland and peaked at number 8 and reached number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. It was his second single to chart in Europe.
Stewart Mason from Allmusic said “Run to You” was the first of the album’s six Top 30 hits, and in retrospect, “one of the weakest of the lot. Although the song has a thundering chorus, the kind that sounds truly excellent blasting through FM speakers, there is quite literally not much else to the song: of the song’s nearly four-minute length, over half of the song is devoted to repeats of the chorus and an unimaginative instrumental breakdown that leads into a seemingly endless vamp on the chorus to fade.” The long instrumental is indicative of the theme of the music video where the protagonist is serenading his guitar as the object of his affection.
The music video was shot in London, England and later Los Angeles.[9] Directed by Steve Barron, it was nominated for the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards in five different categories: Best Direction, Best Special Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. While the song didn’t win any of the awards, it has received more MTV Video Music Award nominations than any other of Adams’ songs. The English actress Lysette Anthony appears in the video.

I’ve heard the whole song and I agree it’s the album version of “Run To You”
Hi guys, I have a question about this single. I recently picked up a copy of this at a garage sale and it is unlike anything I can find on the net. It is by A&M records, printed in Canada, on the front top right corner it says: “12” single 45RPM/45 tours and the vinyl itself is in red colour ! I am guessing it is some kind of a promo copy…can anyone tell me more about it and what it might be worth? Thank you…..

Dear Paul. I wish that instead ‘pulling YOU up’ about Mis-Labeled Recordings that they Hammered the Record Labels Themselves. ‘May-be’ there ‘was’ gonna be a Remixed Version Inside this 12” and if there isn’t, That ain’t Your fault ! I did wonder, as I actually HAVE this 12” Single and the grooves are VERY widely spaced apart- so I assumed it was a 7” Edit or something on it ? Someone mentions the ‘Let Me Take You Dancin’ 12” FARCE – would that not be why our ‘Canada Bry’ might be against REMIXES in General. I mean who’d wan’t to… Read more »

This was, as far as I remember, released before the album. Bob Clearmountain remixed all the album… I think it had a different version, and in the last minute they used the remix in the album too. IMHO I believe this is the reason of the specially remixed label…

In the US the single was released some two weeks prior to the album release. Although two weeks is not a very long time, there is a possibility that A&M, like you say, hastily chose to include the remix on the album. We’ll never know for sure, I guess (or someone could get a hold on Bob Clearmountain himself). Thanks Paul for this post. At least now we know that there is only one remix before 1991 that isn’t available on CD: ‘Let Me Take You Dancing’ (1978). In keeping with Fred’s comment above, and some of the comments on yesterday’s post: I happened to have the original album version of “Run to You” handy, so I actually went as far as to load both of them into Cool Edit Pro’s multitrack editor so I could A-B roll them side-by-side, with the volumes normalized to the same levels and everything. As near as I can tell, they are exactly the same; if there’s any “remixing” here, its too subtle for my fortysomething ears to make out. 🙂 (And considering that I can still make out the 15KHz whine… Read more »
I noticed that on pretty much all of the “Run To You” releases 7″ and 12″ they all have a track duration of 3:59. A&M must have really screwed up on this one. I have two copies and have yet to find one that is a “remix”. But I had to post this so that the mystery could be solved. Anyway Imn my opinion the vinyl sounds much better than the CD.
I need to say that I am not only an ex-dj, but a HUGE collector of music…I have incredible ears and an incredible memory…have since I was 5 or 6 years old and began collecting 45 vinyl. I can remember EXACTLY what any mix of any song sounds like…even if it’s been 30 years. I own about 5000 12″ singles and even more cds. Well, Cool Edit Pro advanced rather considerably beyond its 1.0 incarnation; CEP 2.x was actually the last version Syntrillium released before Adobe bought it and renamed it “Adobe Audition.” I was fairly sure it was the same mix within the first half-minute or so, myself, but I did the whole runthrough just in case they’d done something to the chorus or the bridge, like adding an overdub or changing the balance between instruments. I bought Chris De Burgh’s Missing You 12″ single in 1988, based on the label that says specially remixed version, but lo and behold, a spin on the turntable reveals that it is the same as the album version. And what do you know, Chris is also on Bryan’s label…A&scaM…ooops A&M
Many Pet Shop Boys releases have the wrong versions.
For example: almost all the releases of Opportunities.

As far as I can tell, this is the exact same version as what is on the full cd. “Specially Remixed”…scam from the Labels again. Thanks for the rip, though! It’s a shame the Labels have so many misleading issues to get people to buy stuff.
