Breathe – Hands To Heaven (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A.-Front2

Although it was released as the first single from the group’s debut album All That Jazz, “Hands to Heaven” was not Breathe’s debut single; the group had recorded and released songs prior to signing an album deal with A&M Records. One of these songs, “Don’t Tell Me Lies”, reached #77 on the UK Singles Chart in 1986 before being included on Breathe’s debut album and subsequently being reissued.

“Hands to Heaven” was, however, Breathe’s breakthrough hit in both the UK as well as the United States. The ballad peaked at #4 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1988. In the US, it logged two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that same month (kept from the summit by “Roll with It” by Steve Winwood) and spent 16 weeks in the Top 40. “Hands to Heaven” also peaked at #2 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart.

The song also reached #4 in Norway and #14 in Sweden.

This song was one of a number of singles, many by British and Australian bands, that helped to shape the smooth jazz radio format in the US in the mid to late 1980s. Other associated artists include Swing Out Sister, Johnny Hates Jazz, Icehouse and Sade.

website slowed to a crawl…not just downloads (went from a minute or two, to couple of hours) but even just loading the simple pages…

Weirdly I ripped my own copy of this the other day. Don’t remember buying it, so I think it must’ve once belonged to my ex- girlfriend. Makes sense, as it is the musical equivalent of a chick flick and far too girly for my tastes! 😛

PERFECT vocals on this song. They don’t make them like this anymore .. I truly miss the 80s ..

Hi Paul…I have been trying all day…the FLAC download is going at about 11k/sec which is about 1/3 the old “dialup” speed of the 28.8 late 1980s. 🙂 The website is very slow, too. Any chance the site will be fixed within the next few days? It’s definitely the site…not my ISP. Thanks for the great rip!

Hi again…8:25am and still same problem…about 10k/sec download and the site in general is terribly slow. I have a 30Mbit connection and all other sites/FTP work just fine…even Fun With Vinyl (I thought you 2 were on the same host). Someone else here said the speeds are slow too. Hopefully this is not the problem you had a year or so ago. The download dies, too, about 2 hours into the transfer. 🙁

Great song, and one of my favorite 80’s LPs! Just an FYI, an import double CD was just released of the ‘All That Jazz’ album with tons of extended, live and b-side tracks, remastered. Ordered it from England a while back, well worth checking out if you are a fan. On another FYI tangent, Marcus now works for Headscape web design company in the UK and is one of the hosts on the Boagworld podcast.

Understand that, have been disappointed with some ‘remasters’ that have come out over the years. Some good, some really bad, you take your chances these days 🙂

A favorite song of mine. Takes me back to being 18 and starting to “find myself”. Good memories and bad mixed together.

Thanks DjPaulT!
