Boys Club – I Remember Holding You (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“I Remember Holding You” is a hit single by American Pop duo Boys Club, which peaked at #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. The duo consisted of Gene Hunt and Joe Pasquale from Minneapolis, Minnesota. In radio interviews conducted during the height of their success both Hunt and Pasquale stated that one of their primary musical influences was George Michael, and more specifically, the work Michael did during the Wham! years. “The way he arranged songs and melodies was quite unique and we tried to emulate that with our own music,” Hunt was quoted as saying during one of those early interviews.

Boys Club was the first group to appear on the New Mickey Mouse Club as a musical guest during the first episode.

Hunt (born Eugene Wolfgramm) was previously a member of the family group The Jets. His youngest brothers and sisters are now members of a hard rock group, Against the Season.

In 1990, Hunt briefly reunited with The Jets to record four new tracks for The Best of The Jets (1990). He was featured on the cover and inside album sleeve, and he appeared in the “Special Kinda Love” music video.

The name of this male duet reminds me of the title of the 12″ “Bad Boys – Club Tropicana” by another male duet: Wham!. Just coincidence?

Not my kind of ’80s, I’m afraid – it wasn’t a hit over here, despite the origins of your disc – but you’ll have certain UK fans chuckling at the band’s namesakes. This side of the pond, Joe Pasquale is a squeaky-voiced comedian, while Gene Hunt is a legendary fictional police officer! Weird how these things come together… 🙂

Thanks Paul. One of my favorites from the 80s. Very reminiscent of Wham’s “where did your heart go”.

Thanks for sharing this gem, Paul! I remember hearing this song on the radio and recording it to a blank cassette, playing it over and over for years!! What great memories!! 🙂

Paul, I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I can’t remember this song at all. I probably do know it, but it’s been awhile. I love when you bring back records that some of us (read: ME!) are a little fuzzy about and then realize, yes, I do remember that one. Just crazy. I am looking forward to this record and I’ll let you know what I think.

Thanks Paul!

I wish you could see me now, just swooning while this track plays!! Oh Paul, you have such a remarkable way in choosing the right records to reflect all our moods and passions. Wow! Before I got home, I checked out youtube to see the video and was so impressed by the song (and those sensual visuals!) that I couldn’t wait to hear this full 12-inch version. Boy, what a sublime record!! I could almost hear a haunting resemblance to “Careless Whisper” by Wham! and that I must make a mix CD that has these two tracks together. I can’t… Read more »
