Boy George – Everything I Own (Canada 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“Everything I Own” is a song written by David Gates. Originally recorded by Gates’s rock band Bread in 1972.

Boy George covered the song which reached number one on the UK singles chart for two weeks in March 1987, becoming his first hit as a solo artist. It was also his first solo single after a departure from his band, Culture Club. Owing more to the Ken Boothe version, the sweet reggae style was reminiscent of his earlier debut hit with Culture Club, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”. Coming at the time of his arrest for possession of heroin, it provided a major boost to his career. It was a number one in many countries (including the UK, Canada, Italy, Norway and South Africa) and top 10 in many markets too.

In the US the track failed to make an impact on the Billboard Hot 100 but did peak at #45 on the Dance chart after spending two weeks on the survey becoming a certified gold single.

The b-side “Use Me” is a non LP track.

I always loved the extended mix of this song, since it features vocals by Helen Terry (my favorite vocalist). I’ve never heard the other b-side tracks on this one before though! Thanks!

Hey Paul,
Thanks for posting Everything I own 12″…. Would love to hear the Freddy Bastone mixes you mention and I’ve always wanted to ask you to work your magic on the Sold 12″. I see another reader mentions it. It’s a great mix of a great song that still hasn’t been released on CD. Keep up the good work!! x

You can never go wrong with a little bit of Boy George!
Thanks Paul!
I love the Sold album too. Keep Me In My Mind is my favourite single from it, despite being a minor hit.
Boy George actually wanted Next Time to be his comeback single but the record company wanted to go with something safe and less arrogant. So Everything I Own was recorded. Great that you plan to post the US Bastone Mixes, Paul. Besides being rarer, I think they are better than the original UK Mixes.

Thanks Paul, I am feeling well. But I can’t say the same of my short-term memory!
You know, when I was posting my reply yesterday. I had made a mental note to let you know that I’ve noticed and like the new banner. But after typing my message. poooooooof! That was gone with the wind…until I visited your site again today, and then I remembered.
Sigh!
So, great new banner, Paul. But I’m ashamed to say I can’t spot the inspiration behind it. 😛

I agree with Wolfie. His Sold album was a decent piece of pop and a good successor to the last Culture Club album of the 80’s.
