BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
Formed in 1980 by Malcolm McLaren after the demise of the Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow were originally the first lineup of British group Adam And The Ants. On McLaren’s advice, the band ditched Adam. They found their new lead singer in 14-year-old Myint Myint Aye (Burmese for “High High Cool”), who was later renamed Annabella Lwin.
Typified by Burundi-style drumming and Lwin’s singing, which veered between screaming and ritual chants, Bow Wow Wow saw some early success – amid controversy over their singer’s age, and their vocal support of home taping – and increased their range after McLaren’s departure, but never found widespread fame. The group’s biggest hit in the US was “I Want Candy” which peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Baby Oh No” was one of two new songs added to the “I Want Candy” compilation album released in 1982. “Baby Oh No” was produced by Kenny Laguna of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts fame and remixed by Ivan Ivan and Mark Kamins. Released as a single only in the United States,”Baby Oh No” reached #103 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and #58 on the Dance/Club play charts.
Special note about this single: The sleeve has a sticker identifying this as “Special Remixed Version”, however this info is not on the record label. Side “B” is labeled as side “D”. This disc may have been part (or was initially intended to have been part) of a 2 disc promotional release, since the flip side of “A” is side “D” (as was sometimes done for multi-disc sets. The matrix numbers also tend to support this theory. |

Boy George was a member before they got as far as doing any recording so there is nothing out there with him singing, however some of their songs were written and performed live during his brief time with the band. At that time he called himself Lieutenant Lush. If you listen to the lyrics of Mile High Club it says “This is your Captain Lush speaking”…a clue to the fact it was originally written for him to sing.
First of all, I had no idea that Boy George was a member early in their career. Wow! Secondly, I really like this song. It actually sounds familiar to me, so maybe I’ve heard it before, or maybe it just has that Bow Wow Wow sound. 🙂 Excellent quality, Paul! Thank you! As for the 12″ of “I Want Candy”, the reason that I suggested it is because I’ve read about it elsewhere. The extended version, as featured on the 12″, has never been made available on CD, so I figured that it would be a cool addition to the… Read more »
Wow Wow Wow! More New Wave! Now this is a rarity! Thanks! Yeah, they were a New Wave band that has limited success. They released tons of singles, but only enjoyed two Top Ten hits in the UK. Go Wild In The Country (#7) and I Want Candy (#8). I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but only the sleeves of these two singles sported Annabella nude. And the first time the cover appeared, she was just 14 or 15 years old!!! Her mum accused Malcolm of minor exploitation, and it was even investigated by Scotland Yard then. btw, Boy… Read more »
Wow! I knew about the controversy but did not know about Boy George. I learn something new everyday 🙂
YES!!! Thanks so much, Paulito! You know I’ve been waiting for this one! I second Bellenger’s request for the 12″ of “I Want Candy.” Bellenger – you’re correct. The “extended version” of the song IS 3:33. Best, always, J.
Jbird I had you in mind when Iwas ripping this one I hope that you enjoy it 🙂
By the way, do you have the 12″ of “I Want Candy”? I would like to see a post of that. Apparently, there’s an extended version on there clocking in at 3:33. Or, is that a misprint?
There is a 3:33 12″ version. I will see what I can do 🙂
Thank you, Paul! I must admit that I’ve never heard this one before, so I’m looking forward to downloading it. It’s always nice to have high quality vinyl rips of these lesser known hits, especially since they may never be made available on CD.
You’re welcome Bellenger1981 I hope that you like it 🙂
I’d let you have my cleaned up vinyl of it if you could tell me an easy way I could get it to you…it’s still .wav at the moment but can compress it…
Thank you Ianbucko for the offer but I only post my own rips on the blog. But I would love to hear it for myself. You can upload it to Mediafire and email me the link. My email is at the top of the page in the contact/Social Media tab.
UK’s Cherry Red released ‘See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang/B-Sides’ in 2010. Disc 2 contains “Teenage Queen” plus more previously unreleased material on CD.
Yes but as I have said to Paul, it’s terrible quality on that release…really badly mastered so a good vinyl rip like mine is way better quality…but yes that compilation will get you a listen to the track.
Brilliant Paul! Next best thing to another Ant post is a Bow Wow Wow one 🙂
Have you ever come across the re-recorded version of this only released in Japan and made to promote a teenage girl range of pink jeans?! Called ‘Teenage Queen’…same tune different lyrics.
Thanks Ianbucko. I have not heard “Teenage Queen” sounds interesting.
