Bonzo Goes To Washington – 5 Minutes (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“5 Minutes” is a 1984 single by music act Bonzo Goes To Washington which was a collaboration of musical brainchild P Funkster Bootsy Collins and Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison. The track’s lyrics are credited to “The Gipper,” a reference to Ronald Reagan’s role in “Knute Rockne, All American”. This famed track is based upon a sample of President Reagan’s actual joke pronouncement that he’d “outlaw Russia forever… we begin bombing in five minutes.”

I’m surprised this masterpiece didn’t chart somewhere as it got radio and club play here in L.A. I also have the generic sleeve and never saw the one with Ronnie Raygun on the front!

This is a funny one, thanks for it. Although I need to tell that there is a “needle jump” in track 1 at around 2:35 to 2:36. Please have another listen and a correction if needed. Thanks for your great work! Cheers, chronovisor.

La verdad para mi es una rareza de aquellos años, acá en Chile, creo que inspiro a un grupo chileno denominado “Electrodomesticos”, por su estilo muy peculiar, Gracias por el aporte a la discotheca.

I had no idea this existed.
Years later this would be parodied in The Simpsons where Homer Simpson plays a cassette tape of “Rappin’ Ronnie Reagan” in his car.

Might be worthwhile revisiting the various Paul Hardcastle ’19’ twelves again, too, perhaps…

Amazing. I literally pulled this 12″ out last week with others to digitize myself. It’s sitting on top of my player at the moment.

I’ve never seen this in a picture sleeve. Mine is in a generic.

Thanks for saving me the work, Paul!

Dance Music was so powerful in the ’80’s with artists voicing their concerns for the country and the world. I have very fond memories of this track because it made one think about one’s government at the time. There should be no joking concerning “…bombing in five minutes.” I thought the execution of the record and production was top notch. Great beats as well. People may dismiss dance music as an escape, but records like this stimulated thought and commentary. Paul, thanks for bringing this one back into the light especially with all that is happening in the world today.… Read more »
