Berlin – Sex (I’m A…) (Australasia 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

12 Inches of “Sex…”

“Sex (I’m A…)” is a song by the American band Berlin from their second album Pleasure Victim. The song was co-written by group members John Crawford, Terri Nunn and David Diamond and sung as a duet by Crawford and Nunn.

Released as the album’s second single in February 1983, the single became a cult hit on American radio and brought the group into the mainstream. Despite the significant attention, the song’s racy lyrics resulted in it being banned from several radio stations. Perhaps because of this, the single ultimately peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in late March and early April 1983.The song was also the first single release from the band’s new label, Geffen Records.

As a bonus I have included the “Instrumental Version” which I lifted from the U.S. 12″ promo.

Xcellent new-wave-synth-pop mixes! Sex reminds me of Giorgio Moroder productions and The Metro of Ultravox and early Kim Wilde stuff. Wiki has listed quite a few cover version of this song, all in all another interesting day @ BTG!

Back when it came out, this was played all the time on 6-UVS (one of the Perth university radio stations).

It made it to #62 on the Billboard 100, and it was well-known enough for Weird Al Yankovic to include it in the “Polkas on 45” medley on his second album, so someone must have been playing it on the radio… 🙂

Yes that’s it! I didn’t recognise the song but knew all the lyrics! Of course, from the hilarious Weird Al Polka Medley! LOL

Thanks…it’s nice to have the instrumental version in crystal clear sound. I wish they’d release the single remix of “Now It’s My Turn” on CD 🙁

Awesome post, Paul! Thank you! Berlin’s back catalog has been hugely neglected with so many 7″ and 12″ mixes that have never been made available on CD. I even wrote to Cherry Red Records (U.K. label which specializes in reissues) about reissuing the band’s back catalog with bonus tracks, but I never heard anything back. If you have any more Berlin, like “Now It’s My Turn [Edit/Remix]”, as Jon mentioned, or “Like Flames [Extended Version]”, please post. Thank you.

The extended mix of Like Flames can be found of the Japan “Dancing in Berlin EP” CD but the single version has never made it to CD.

I haven’t even hit download yet, but I’ve certainly hit ORGASM!! Man Paul, you pull out the best 12-inches, you incredibly “hung” DJ!!! No, seriously!! Your record collection is, …..HUGE!!! I love this song. It was so daring when it first came out, and still continues to titillate and inspire and make us all hot-under-the-collar, if not other places as well. A New Wave classic. What’s cool about the record is that it really doesn’t use any expletives. Just acceptable words. Makes me laugh though, it seems that the girl in the/a relationship can be of many things, but the… Read more »
