Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988
BTG BARBIE Rewind: Bubblegum Pop Inspired by BARBIE!
“Barbie Dance Club” is a cassette single released in 1988 featuring three exclusive songs written for Barbie herself that were included as part of a 30-minute direct-to-video promotional VHS tape released in 1989. The video featured a Dance Club consisting of kids, ranging from 8-12 years of age, essentially giving promotion to outfits for the Mattel Barbie doll. There was also a special line of Dance Club dolls released all wearing club fashions the dolls included Barbie, Ken, Kayla, and Devon.
In the video you could learn to do the Barbie dance created by pop mega-star Paula Abdul. Watch the video
Singer/songwriter Stacey Piersa who would later write “Didn’t I Say I Love You” (from the Paula Abdul single “My Love Is For Real”) with Elliot Wolff appears in the video as a dancer. Elliot Wolff wrote Paula Abdul’s hit songs, “Straight Up” and “Cold Hearted.”
I was not able to find any information on who the female vocalist is on these tracks. None of these songs have ever been released digitally.

Cool little gem, I didn’t know you were also remastering cassettes, the quality is superb, love the adapted cover art! I’m glad the release of the Barbie movie is making people revisit these rarities, often considered just novelty toy songs but they really are pure 1980s Dance Pop nostalgic bliss. Also worth checking out the cassette single “Everybody’s Dancin” and the rare Barbie & The Rockers album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voLpt7jNG0I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENkqoViud7A

Has anyone heard Chasing a rainbow on Barbie – La Mia Discoteca from 1985? It’s an incredibly catchy Italo disco track.
I have not heard of it but sounds interesting.
the vocals of that song is Dora Carofiglio (Valerie Dore), how the song ended in between that crap compilation, God knows lol
Wow, is that really Dora? Thanks, that’s amazing to know. I love her vocals. She’s the best. I thought I had heard most of her Italo songs. I’m going to listen again now.
I’ve seen and heard a lot of crazy things from the 80s. But this is one of the craziest. Many thanks for the information and the digitization. Another piece for the ‘You must have heard that’.
BTG is the place for the crazy I love these kinds of things 🙂
Wow!! You are going full-in with the Barbie rarities! What a treat – we’re not worthy, lol… Can’t wait to sink my teeth into these danceable beats. It doesn’t get more Barbie pop than this, thank you Paul!! On a side note, I imagine you’ve heard Living Doll, credited to The Beach Boys but most likely Brian Wilson solo. It was a flexi-disc 45 that came with the California Dream Barbie in 1987. It’s pretty good!
I actually have never heard that song Retro Hound. I wish it had been released on a better format. Flexis are great fun but hard to get a good transfer out of. I hope you enjoy this particular slice of cheese 🙂
Thanks so much for posting this! I never thought I’d be downloading a children’s tape, but I’m glad I did and glad you posted. It was a fun listen.
You’re welcome, DaveR 🙂
Kudos for making a rare fun Barbie tape available for our enjoyment! Love the scanned tape itself! I love unique tapes like this! Thank you Paul!
You’re welcome, Modernaire 🙂
What a find!! Paul, this looks to be so much fun!! I really think I’m becoming a huge Barbie and Ken fan! The movie I am becoming obsessed with. Crazy!! I’m just loving the Summertime spirit of these songs!! Thanks, Paul, for bringing out my inner Ken!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff. I am so thrilled that you can find appreciation in everything I post. This will certainly make you feel good. Very Madonna/Debbie Gibson-ish. Enjoy! 🙂
