Nicki French – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (UK 12″ Promo)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1995

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is a Christmas song written by Johnny Marks and originally recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958; it has since been recorded by numerous other music artists. By the song’s 50th anniversary in 2008, Lee’s original version had sold over 25 million copies around the world with the 4th most digital downloads sold of any Christmas single.

In 1995 British singer Nicki French covered the song with a euro-House production by Mike Stock, and Matt Aitken of SAW. The track was recorded at Union St. London and remixed by Peter Day. “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was only issued in the UK as a white label 12″ promo.

This one did not have any cover art so I put together a custom sleeve.

Schroeder – Linus & Lucy (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988

To me the Peanuts gang is always associated with the Holiday Season, so here is a little something to keep you dancing all the way into the New Year.

“Linus and Lucy” is a popular instrumental jazz standard written by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi, appearing in many Peanuts animated specials. Named for the two fictional siblings Linus and Lucy van Pelt, it gained its greatest exposure as part of the A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. It is one of the most recognizable pieces by Guaraldi and has gained status as the signature melody of the Peanuts franchise.

In 1988, a Electro cover version was produced and arranged by Tom Bennett Davis under the alias of Schroeder. It contains edits by Carlos Berrios and Omar Santana. The record was released on the Pow Wow Records label.

The song did not chart.

Terry Hall 1959-2022

Terry Hall, lead singer of the English 2 tone and ska revival band The Specials, has died.

The news of Hall’s passing was shared on the band’s verified social media accounts, who on Facebook wrote that he died “following a brief illness.”

The post called Hall “our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced,” going on to say that “his music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.”

Hall was reportedly 63 at the time of his death, and is survived by wife Lindy Heymann, a filmmaker, and children Leo and Felix Hall.

Originating in 1977 in Coventry, England, the Specials found success in the late ’70s and early ‘80s, with their debut self-titled album.

The original lineup of members included Hall, who replaced vocalist Tim Strickland shortly after The Specials’ formation, along with Jerry Dammers, Roddy “Radiation” Byers, Neville Staple, John Bradbury, Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez.

The Specials are known for tracks including “Gangsters” and “Ghost Town,” the latter of which remained at No. 1 for three weeks in the UK in 1981, going on to spend 10 weeks in the Top 40.

The band, also known for its staunch opposition of racial injustice, frequently commented on politics and social reform in England and beyond. “Forty years ago the Specials embodied the state of the nation – seven voices as one from a typically dispossessed UK town,” the band’s official website says by way of description.

Hall also formed bands Fun Boy Three in 1981 and The Colourfield in 1984 – known for the hit song “Thinking of You” – before going solo with a pair of albums in the ’90s.

Spandau Ballet – She Loved Like Diamond (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982

“She Loved Like Diamond” is a song by the English new wave band Spandau Ballet, released on 11 January 1982 as the third single from what would be their second album, Diamond. The music video and cover art for the single focused on the sexual themes in the lyrics and the allure of the title character. In writing the song, their guitarist/songwriter Gary Kemp was influenced by American Jewish music with an eastern European flavour that he had heard in movie themes and musicals. Most reviews singled out lead singer Tony Hadley’s performance as the main problem with the recording, which only mustered a number 49 peak position on the UK Singles Chart. The poor showing prompted the idea to release another song from the album, but the band realized that getting a new single to succeed would require a remix of the disappointing work of their current producer and decided to discontinue their association with him in doing so.

“She Loved Like Diamond” was released on 11 January 1982, and only got as high as number 49 on the UK Singles Chart. The number 30 showing of “Paint Me Down” meant that the studio performance of that song that they filmed for the British music chart television programme Top of the Pops went unaired, so it was clear that an appearance there to promote “She Loved Like Diamond” was not going to happen.
