Re-Rip Newly Remastered!
Originally I posted this one on June 29, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon Super 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!
“Who’s Leaving Who” [sic] is a song written by Jack White and Mark Spiro, first recorded by Canadian country singer Anne Murray in 1986. It achieved a bigger popularity in Europe when it was covered by British Hi-NRG singer Hazell Dean in 1988.
The song was first recorded by Anne Murray for her 1986 album Something to Talk About. The song was released as the album’s second single, following her Canadian and US number one country single, “Now and Forever (You and Me)”. The single failed to reach the same level of success, peaking at number 93 on the Canadian singles chart, and failing to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Its biggest success was on the adult contemporary charts, peaking at number 15 in Canada and number 26 in the U.S.

I love this version!
Both Hazell Dean and Anne Murray did this great classic pop song justice in their own distinctive ways. Obviously I heard Hazell Dean version (and my still my favouarate especially the three 12″ versions) first, it being a big chart hit in the UK, Europe and South Africa. Thanks for sharing Anne’s version! 😉
What may be considered a classic is now new to me. I did not even know that Anne Murray sang this first. I, of course, heard the Hazell Dean version and now I have a “renewed” appreciation for this version. Thank you DjPaulT

Even though I love Anne’s version and the remix, I can understand the lack of success on both the country and pop charts. Conservative country probably deemed it too outrageous and pop radio too confusing. At least there’s lots of love for it here.
Btw, I’ve always thought this would’ve been the perfect pop single for Laura Branigan in 1986.

I cannot believe i’d be saying this Paul, but i prefer this over Hazell and i am a die hard PWL fan (what’s wrong with me??) Always love her unique vocal kinda similar to Karen Carpenter.
First time i am hearing this today. All this time i thought Hazell did the original. I wonder if there are anymore dancey 12″ mixes she released. Curious to hear that now.

Thanks for bringing these re-rips on Paul; I know you’re making so many of your “worshippers” EXTREMELY Happy!!! I really like Anne and it was so cool that the show “Family Guy” had her as a guest voice too. I think that it’s great Seth McFarland is a big fan and how he got the character of Stewie enchanted by her.

What a terrific song, and sadly overlooked. It deserved to chart at least Top 40 and a better chance in the clubs. The first single from this album, “Now & Forever”, had the makings of a stellar comeback and should have been more supported at pop radio. I still love this Anne album and listen to it a few times a year. The b-side of “WLW?” is another great track, “Reach For Me”, which also would have had hit potential in ’86. Oh well, 20/20, I guess. Oh I totally agree DanaDotCom. I think this was only 12″ that she released. Correct me if I am wrong. Would love to find more 12″ singles from Anne.

I actually found out that there is a Canadian 12″ for “Heartaches” not sure if it has mixes or not. It’s not listed on Discogs but the catalog number is Capitol Records SPRO304.
