Andy Summers – 2010 (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1984

“2010” is a 1984 single released by the guitarist for the band The Police, Andy Summers for the soundtrack of the film 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

“2010” was a modern new-wave pop version of Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra (the main theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey). Though Summers’ recording was included on the soundtrack album and released as a single, it was not used in the film. For the B-side to the single, Summers recorded another 2010-based track entitled “To Hal and Back”, though this appeared in neither the film nor the soundtrack album.

Thank you SO much for this, Paul! I remember the first time I watched this music video on WTBS’s Night Tracks. Your transfer sounds wonderful, but unfortunately there are four odd speed fluctuations at 0:47, 0:50, 0:52, and 1:56.

Thanks, Paul! I haven’t heard this in a long time. Folks, 1)if you like the bass on this tune, check out Padlock by Gwen Guthrie…an underrated song if you ask me. 2)Another great classical work that was covered in a funky way is Night On Disco Mountain on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack! Have a great day, Paul and everyone!

Primarily, I’m a lover of dance music, but I’m also a fan of soundtracks and classical music. I love this theme and I am familiar with this cover version. Paul, this is so excellent of you to post this. I can see the love pouring out from the community here. This is pretty amazing and thanks for tearing into your sealed mint copy.

Love seeing this pop up!! BTW, I’d love, love any other Police-related posts you might want to make in the future … any member or together.

This is wonderful to hear – I didn’t know Andy contributed to this soundtrack. Thanks again Paul!~

Andy Summers is a great guitarist, love his work in The Police. I’m still hoping the deluxe edition of Reggatta De Blanc will see release soon.
Also Sprach Zarathustra as a theme remains awesome no matter what genre the backing is. Thanks for sharing this funky version, Paul.
Peace,
dj

I’m familiar with this! I don’t think it charted, but was very cool nonetheless. Fresh off the Synchronicity tour, Andy Summers and Stuart Copeland went to work on soundtracks and they were hot & in-demand! I’m excited for the exclusive B-side as well. Thank you Paul!!

WOW!!! This has been on my want-list for such a long time! I actually started to believe that it didn’t actually exist! Thank you so much for a superb transfer of this eclectic selection! (also perfectly timed with the upcoming Synchronicity Box later this month)

Well, I was watching this movie last night (LOL!) Pitty this was not included in it! MANY THANKS for this 12″! It somehow reminded me of a project called “Splash Band” (on ZYX records) that made synth/dance versions of themes from (mainly) John Carpenter’s movies. Some of those were pretty good. I wonder what record will be tomorrow’s “disco mix”! 🙂 Paul, could you consider ripping Toto’s “Georgy Porgy” 12″ or Cheryl Lynn’s “You Saved My Day” (disco mix) sometime in the future – if you have them? The re-issues sound very bad and the original vinyl copies are out… Read more »
