a-ha – The Living Daylights (Germany 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

NEW 2020 Transfer!
Meticulously Remastered!

Originally posted March 26, 2011

“The Living Daylights” is a song performed by Norwegian pop group A-ha for the 1987 James Bond film of the same name. It was written by guitarist Pål Waaktaar. After first appearing in the context of the film, a revised version was included in the band’s Stay on These Roads studio album, which came out in 1988.

John Barry was listed on the credits as co-writer and producer, and the initial release of the song was his version. A second version of the song, re-worked by A-ha in 1988, later appeared on their third album, Stay on These Roads.

When interviewed on a late-night show in 1987, Barry said that he found working with the band exhausting secondary to the band’s insistence on using their own version of the song for release. In an interview with Hot Rod Magazine, keyboardist Magne Furuholmen said that “[the band’s] fight with Barry left a rather unpleasant aftertaste. Apparently, he compared us to Hitlerjugend in a newspaper interview.” Waaktaar stated that although Barry produced the track, he never contributed to the songwriting process and should not have been credited as such (the band Duran Duran made similar claims after they worked briefly with Barry on the theme to the previous Bond film, “A View to a Kill”, in 1985). However, Waaktaar has also said: “I loved the stuff he [John Barry] added to the track. I mean, it gave it this sort of really cool string arrangement. That’s when it, for me, started to sound like a Bond thing.”

“The Living Daylights” was released in the summer of 1987. The song peaked at number five in the United Kingdom and number one in Norway. In the United States, the single failed to chart.

The song remains one of A-ha’s most played songs in live concerts and has often been extended into a “sing-along” with the audience, as featured on the live album How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head. In live performances, Paul Waaktaar often included the main James Bond Theme in his guitar solo.

The Living Daylights was John Barry’s last James Bond film score. John Barry maintained he wrote the iconic James Bond theme tune but composer Monty Norman was given the credit. Norman won a court case over ownership. John Barry was one of the all great film composers. Imho his film music had an elegance and atmosphere very few composers have rivalled. Classic examples: https://youtu.be/v1F5z57mLIg https://youtu.be/bPGXbLH0D1s A-ha is my all time favourite group. Some of their music actually has a John Barry type vibe. Hunting High And Low is how imagine a Barry Aha song might have sounded. I find the… Read more »

Sorry, false alarm it seems. I tried again and it worked fine. Must have been a software glitch. Yesterday it appeared the archive contained “A Man Could Get Arrested” as well.

An underrated Bond theme. I assumed that a-ha were difficult to work with after John Barry’s comments, but I then read an interview with Morten Harket in which he said Barry was not the most pleasant guy. He said that Barry spoke badly about Duran Duran when they met, which a-ha understandably found uncomfortable. Disappointing.

Well I was one of the people who did buy a copy of the single back in the day 😁. To John Barry’s credit he helped to produce great tracks with both bands and I think this version is much better than the one a-ha produced without him.

Hot Dog! As a huge Bond music fan, I’m thrilled to have this extended version courtesy of you Paul. Interesting trivia with this one. I just love the “liner notes” you provide with each audio presentation. Paul. This past week has been monumental with the records you’ve selected. We’re all basking in your audio miracles!

Paul, have a fabulous weekend and my best wishes to the community here. Take care Guys!!!!

Oh, my first comment got lost? Hm. Then here I go again:
Brilliant redo of a brilliant song, Paul. And then again I must admit that I belong to the probably very few people who prefer the later rerecorded version from the album.
Love the sound of your new transfer which is even better than the one from 2011. Well done and thank you, Paul.
I´ve already started into an extended weekend as it is Labor Day over here. Enjoy your weekend, Paul and Jeff and all the family members from BTG 😉

One of my favourite bands. Morten Harket also made some great solo albums. This must be a french pressing because of the “Maxi 45t” sticker which means “maxi 45 tours”. Thanks Paul.

Thank you!
