BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“I Ran (So Far Away)”, also released as “I Ran”, is a song by English new wave band A Flock of Seagulls. It was released in 1982 as the second single from their self-titled debut album. Since then, it has been their most successful single, topped the chart in Australia, and reached #7 in New Zealand #9 United States respectively.
The version featured on this 12″ is the video mix which omits most of the introductory section and begins with a cymbal crash but retains the full ending of the long version. This version was featured on some vinyl pressings of A Flock of Seagulls.

Many thanks for this one Paul.
TY
everyone is correct: there was the original 5 minute 12″ with the long synth intro, 12″ promos of the 3:58 US video/ official single edit (predicated by their deal with Jive/Arista here in the US, 7″ singles of the 3:58 version (which I believe were the stock copies in the US, and if that wasn’t enough, the 7″ version was shortened for conservative radio stations with a fade-out (ecch!).
Thanks Paul. 🙂
IT’S TRUE. It does sound better!
Oh, and this track sounds better than on the cd I have (Japan ALCB-196).
Thank you, still love this song as much as when I first heard it.
This short version is what is on the Australian 7″ single and is DAMN HARD to find on CD. Kudos for your rip, Paul.
Thanks so much for this BUT i hope youre tasking it easy DJPaul
Love this band. and this mix is boom! <3 xxxxxx take care..
youre much appreciated out here and 1 of the few blogs still goin after decade + xxxx
Thank you risildowgtn i’m still taking it easy. BTG has been around almost ten years hard to believe 🙂
Wow!! Almost ten years!! That’s incredible Paul and what a musical legacy you’ve created. Please do something special for the ten year anniversary. Hey, please take it easy and all. You certainly touch our lives and we would be forever lost without you.
Forever Friends!!
Jeff
I much preferred this single to “Wishing” This track was used for the game soundtrack in GTA Vice City in years to come.
Thanks for the info Junior 🙂
This version is on many compilations. I don’t think the 3:13 single edit has ever been 🙁
Actually it’s kind of the other way around. You can easily find the single edit (which actually runs 3:46) on Just Can’t Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the ’80s, Vol. 5. I don’t think there was ever a 3:13 version.
I got the 3:13 info from Wikipedia so it may not be accurate.
After doing such research the standard 7″ version runs 3:59 “Video Edit”, some promo 7″ singles (like the US promo) has either 3:32 edit and a bit longer 3:41 edit.
Good to have you back – and running 🙂
Great Flock this one, nice for compilations – enjoyed the full one for decades already.. Man your site is confronting like a mirror sometimes 😉
Thank you Dirk 🙂
T’anks! The version I wanted. 😀
You’re welcome Richard The Big Bunny 🙂
Thanks Paul a million. Was this the same as the 7″?
No the 7″ is a bit shorter 3:13 and fades out.
Incredible Paul!! Of course, I know this new wave classic, but you always showcase something rare which is what I love. These video mixes are gold!!
Please continue to take care of yourself and relax this weekend! Hey, I’ve preordered the box set too (Thank you Karen!!)!! I am really jazzed about the whole thing.
Jeff
That’s cool Jeff I have been hearing on Facebook that they plan to release even more material 🙂 Have a great weekend.
