Burning The Ground Exclusive
Happy Halloween, everyone!
For the final installment of this year’s Spooky Season Spins, I wanted to do something a little different. Instead of featuring another individual 12-inch single, I’ve put together a special compilation called “Burning The Ground: Dark Side Of The Dance Floor.”
This nearly two-hour collection brings together 18 tracks of dark new wave, gothic rock, post-punk, industrial, and synthpop from the 1980s.
Every track in this compilation comes from a previous Burning The Ground vinyl post. These are recordings I’ve already shared on the blog, but I thought Halloween would be the perfect opportunity to revisit some of my favorites and bring them together in one collection.
One of the things I’ve always loved about ’80s alternative dance music is how easily it can shift from something haunting and atmospheric to something powerful enough to fill a dance floor. The darker side of the decade gave us some incredible records, filled with icy synthesizers, pounding electronic rhythms, sinister vocals, and unforgettable melodies.
I didn’t want to put together a collection of the usual Halloween novelty songs. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of walking into a dark, smoke-filled underground club sometime in the 1980s, where you never quite knew what the DJ would play next.
The collection opens with the dramatic “Pimpf” by Depeche Mode, followed by Propaganda’s mysterious and unsettling “Dr. Mabuse.” From there, we move through Fad Gadget, Kirlian Camera, Xymox, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Killing Joke.
As the compilation progresses, the atmosphere shifts toward the darker electronic sounds of Peter Murphy, Cabaret Voltaire, I Start Counting, Anne Clark, and Front 242.
Naturally, Ministry’s “(Every Day Is) Halloween” had to make an appearance. After all, what would a collection like this be without one of the most recognizable alternative Halloween anthems?
I’ve also included Dead Or Alive’s wonderfully sinister “Something In My House,” Soft Cell’s haunting “Martin,” and Duran Duran’s atmospheric “Secret Oktober.”
The collection closes with Depeche Mode’s short but eerie “Interlude #1 (Mission Impossible),” bringing everything to a fitting end.
Although these recordings have all appeared on Burning The Ground before, I spent considerable time putting this collection together. I carefully selected the running order, adjusted the levels, and worked on the spacing and transitions so the songs would sound good together.
Rather than treating this as a continuous DJ mix, I wanted to preserve each individual recording while creating a listening experience that flows naturally from beginning to end.
For longtime visitors, I hope this collection brings back memories of some favorite Burning The Ground posts. For newer readers, perhaps it will introduce you to a few recordings you missed the first time around. You can always explore the archives to find the original vinyl posts.
Most of all, I hope it captures a little of the atmosphere and excitement of those alternative dance floors that made the 1980s such a special time for music.
So turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and enjoy a trip to the dark side of the dance floor.
Thank you for spending another Spooky Season with me here at Burning The Ground.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Thank you so much Paul for your hard work with this Halloween compilation and this entire spooky season! Happy Halloween to all here!!
Thank you so much, Retro Hound! I had a wonderful time putting this year’s Spooky Season Spins together, and the compilation was my way of giving everyone one last Halloween treat. It means a lot to know that all the time and effort are appreciated. Thank you for being part of the Burning The Ground family and for all your support. I hope you had a fantastic Halloween, my friend!
Greetings Paul,
this is a very nice surprise and an excellent idea: showcasing not only a different side of the 80s but also the care you take in selecting and preparing each record you share here on your wonderful site!
Thank you for this spooky, moody, chilly and very interesting home made compilation Paul.
peace,
dj
Greetings, Don Julian! Thank you for such a thoughtful and heartfelt comment. It really means a lot that you recognize the care I put into selecting and preparing the music I share here. One of the things I’ve always loved about the ’80s is how much incredible music existed beyond the mainstream. There was a darker, more mysterious side to the decade that deserves just as much attention. I thought Halloween was the perfect excuse to bring some of those sounds together. It was also a wonderful opportunity to revisit past Burning The Ground posts and give these tracks a… Read more »
Outstanding Paul, thank you so much! A bunch of these were from before I started visiting, so it is great to get them (though 24 bit would have been more amazing!). I was just about to say what Toxicaudio said – the Xymox track is so great, really happy to have that one! I have the video on a Telegenics tape, and the audio is Hi-Fi stereo and it sounds decent but your vinyl transfer is better of course. There isn’t a bad track in here, such a great curation. I’ll be listening in order fully later today. I must… Read more »
Thank you so much, JP! I’m really happy you’re enjoying the compilation, especially since some of these tracks were posted before you discovered Burning The Ground. Believe me, I would have loved to offer the entire collection in 24-bit! Unfortunately, with nearly two hours of music, the file size would have been massive. Since this is a compilation of previously posted vinyl transfers, I felt 16-bit was a good compromise. I wanted everyone to have a chance to enjoy these tracks together, especially since many of the original posts are no longer available for download. I’m glad you mentioned Xymox.… Read more »
Thank you, Paul. What a fantastic collection to wrap up Halloween. I can finally add Xymox to my collection-man, what a great track! Unfortunately, this is another 12″ record that had gone missing from my collection. My absolute thanks to you for this track alone. Wishing you all a great weekend and a happy Halloween!
Thank you so much, Toxicaudio! I’m thrilled that you can finally add Xymox back to your collection! “Obsession” is such a fantastic track, and that Club Mix is one of my favorites. It’s always a shame when a treasured 12″ goes missing, especially one this good. At least you have the music back now! I’m really happy you enjoyed the compilation. I wanted to end Spooky Season with something special, and it’s wonderful knowing these tracks are finding their way into everyone’s collections. Thank you for all your support throughout the series. Wishing you a fantastic weekend and a very… Read more »
How fun! Takes me back to Smart Bar, Berlin & Clubland – all Chicago legends of 80’s alternative music. Speaking of legends – it doesn’t get more iconic than Mr. Al Jourgensen (Ministry). Our careers crossed paths a couple times. In the early 80’s he managed a small resale vinyl record store on Clark Street. I’d stop by after picking up my weekly stack of promo vinyl from the record pool I belonged to (DJ International) before hitting Gramophone Records for hot new imports. I was usually hunting for second copies of some freshly released 12” promos. Al would have… Read more »
DJ Lollipop, what an incredible story! Thank you so much for sharing these memories. I love hearing firsthand accounts of the Chicago club scene, especially from someone right in the middle of it all. Smart Bar, Berlin, and Clubland were such important places for alternative dance music. Your encounters with Al Jourgensen are priceless! I can picture him behind the counter, surrounded by stacks of freshly acquired 12″ promos, already knowing which records to put aside for you. And the black nail polish story made me laugh! I’m very familiar with Ministry’s early synthpop period, and I’ve always had a… Read more »
Some choice tunes here… and some picks very reminiscent of reader input a couple of weeks ago 🙂
You have a good memory, Humph! Some of the suggestions readers made a couple of weeks ago definitely helped inspire this collection. I always enjoy hearing what everyone would like to see featured on Burning The Ground. Since all these tracks were pulled from past posts, I thought it would be fun to bring some favorites together for Halloween. Thanks for being part of the conversation, and Happy Halloween!
Mixtape! 🔥
That reminds me someone requested I post my team it’s for an old tape… need to find it!!!
You know it, ING! Nothing quite like a good old-fashioned mixtape! I still love the idea of putting together a collection of songs that takes you somewhere from beginning to end. Now you’ve got me curious about that old tape of yours! I hope you find it because I’d love to see what you had on there. Those old mixtapes are like little time capsules. Happy Halloween, my friend!
ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!! Thank you for this amazing treat! It will be perfect for Hallow’s Eve and beyond.
I was contemplating about sending you my self-made Halloween compilation, but I figured you would upload one for us. My compilation also includes Front 242 – Headhunter (V1.0)/Ministry – (Every Day Is) Halloween/Dead Or Alive – Something In My House (Mortevicar Mix)… so amazing! Maybe I will send it to you anyways for next year.
I hope you have a spooktacular Halloween!
Thank you so much, Axel! I’m thrilled that you’re enjoying the compilation! I wanted to give everyone something special to close out this year’s Spooky Season Spins, and I’m so happy it’s being received so well. Great minds think alike! I love that we both included Front 242, Ministry, and Dead Or Alive. Those three tracks are Halloween essentials in my book! I would absolutely love to see your compilation, so please send it along. I’m always interested in hearing what other people put together, and who knows, you might give me some ideas for next year! Thank you for… Read more »

Hi Kyle, I only shared this in 16-bit FLAC, but I added the three download options for the same file.
I was beginning to give up the ghost because I felt something was awfully wrong that you didn’t post today. I felt like Lunus waiting for “The Great Pumpkin” to arrive. I even thought that you might surprise us all with something on Halloween, but here you are sharing this outstanding compilation curated from your bewitching archive of hauntingly great tracks! Thank you so much, Paul, for doing this. As you know, I’ve been going through a lot lately, so this is the perfect “sonic storm” to bring some “Spirit” into my life!! I do hope you and the BTG… Read more »
Oh, Jeff, you gave me a good laugh with the Linus and the Great Pumpkin reference! I promise I wasn’t going to leave everyone sitting in the pumpkin patch waiting for something that never arrived! I had a little Halloween surprise up my sleeve, and I’m so happy you think it was worth the wait. I know you’ve been going through a difficult time lately, my friend, and I sincerely hope things start looking brighter for you soon. If this collection can help lift your spirits and take your mind off things for a couple of hours, then putting it… Read more »
Thank you for the Halloween treats.
You’re very welcome, Benjamin! I hope you enjoy the compilation. It was a lot of fun putting these Halloween treats together. Thank you for stopping by, and have a wonderful Halloween!
Is it me or with quite a lot of artists on this compilation having an association with a certain label. Could this be Halloween as seen through the prism of Mute Records and Artists.
You know, Aaron, that’s a great observation! I hadn’t really thought about it that way, but Mute Records certainly has a strong presence here. With artists like Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, and I Start Counting, it’s hard to overlook that connection. Mute played such an important role in shaping the darker side of electronic music during the ’80s, so I suppose it’s only natural that several of its artists found their way into this collection. I love your description of Halloween through the prism of Mute Records! Thanks for pointing that out, and Happy Halloween!
Holy smokes, this is amazing, thank you! I was 20 years late to the Propaganda party, but A Secret Wish is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Thank you, David! Better late than never when it comes to discovering Propaganda! “A Secret Wish” is an incredible album and one that has aged beautifully. Trevor Horn and the ZTT team really created something special with that record. “Dr. Mabuse” is such a dark, dramatic masterpiece, and the 13th Life Mix felt like a perfect fit for this Halloween collection. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. Happy Halloween, my friend!
