Burning The Ground Exclusive
Some records are simply made for Halloween, and today’s Spooky Season Spins selection sounds as though it crawled straight out of a crypt. We’re heading back to 1984 for a delightfully twisted slice of British gothic rock from one of the most outrageous bands to emerge from London’s underground scene. It’s Alien Sex Fiend with “Dead And Buried,” a sinister, hypnotic, and wonderfully deranged record that perfectly captures the darker side of the 1980s.
Formed in London in late 1982, Alien Sex Fiend became closely associated with the legendary Batcave nightclub, one of the most important gathering places for the emerging gothic subculture. Led by the unmistakable Nik Fiend and his wife, Mrs. Fiend, the band developed a sound that combined post-punk, psychedelic rock, primitive electronics, industrial rhythms, and a healthy dose of B-movie horror. Their music was strange, confrontational, and often darkly humorous. While many of their contemporaries approached gothic rock with a sense of seriousness, Alien Sex Fiend seemed perfectly happy to turn the whole thing into a gloriously demented nightmare.
“Dead And Buried” arrived in August 1984 on Anagram Records, a subsidiary of Cherry Red Records, during an especially productive period for the group. Following their 1983 debut album Who’s Been Sleeping In My Brain?, Alien Sex Fiend were quickly establishing themselves as one of the more recognizable names in Britain’s independent music scene. Their unusual appearance, theatrical performances, and unpredictable recordings helped them stand apart from the growing number of bands associated with the gothic movement.
Musically, “Dead And Buried” is a wonderfully unsettling experience. A relentless, mechanical rhythm drives the track forward while distorted guitar, swirling electronics, and eerie effects create an atmosphere that feels somewhere between a haunted carnival and an underground nightclub. Nik Fiend’s distinctive vocals are the real centerpiece. He snarls, howls, mutters, and shrieks his way through the recording with the enthusiasm of a mad scientist who has just discovered how to bring the dead back to life.
What makes the song especially appealing is its danceable quality. Beneath all the noise and theatrical horror is an infectious groove that would have sounded perfectly at home on the dance floor at the Batcave. Alien Sex Fiend understood that gothic music could be both frightening and fun. “Dead And Buried” captures that balance beautifully. It is creepy enough for a Halloween soundtrack but energetic enough to keep the dance floor moving.
The single was produced by Ken Thomas, whose work helped give the recording its thick, atmospheric sound. Interestingly, the single versions of “Dead And Buried” and its companion track “Attack!!!” are entirely different recordings from those that appeared on the band’s second studio album, Acid Bath, later in 1984. The 12-inch editions are also longer than their 7-inch counterparts, allowing the band’s hypnotic rhythms and bizarre sonic experiments additional room to unfold.
The record’s unsettling atmosphere extends to its accompanying material. “Attack!!!” is another extended excursion into the band’s chaotic musical world, while “Ignore The Machine… Dub” revisits one of their earliest underground favorites through a more spacious, dub-influenced arrangement. Produced by Youth, the latter provides an especially interesting contrast with the more aggressive material on the record.
Despite their unconventional sound, Alien Sex Fiend managed to make an impression on the mainstream British charts. “Dead And Buried” entered the UK Singles Chart on August 25, 1984, at No. 92 and climbed to No. 91 the following week. It eventually spent three weeks in the Top 100, a remarkable achievement for a record that sounded so completely unlike the polished pop dominating the airwaves at the time. The single was also a Top 10 hit on the UK Independent Singles Chart.
One of the most memorable aspects of Alien Sex Fiend was their ability to combine horror imagery with a playful sense of the absurd. Their influences stretched from punk rock and psychedelia to electronic experimentation and classic horror films. Unlike bands that relied on gloomy atmospheres alone, Alien Sex Fiend created an entire world of grotesque characters, twisted humor, and musical mayhem. It was a world that could be disturbing one moment and completely ridiculous the next, often within the same song.
More than four decades later, “Dead And Buried” remains a wonderful reminder of just how adventurous the independent music scene could be during the early 1980s. It also demonstrates why the original gothic movement was far more varied than its popular image sometimes suggests. Alien Sex Fiend were never particularly interested in following anyone else’s rules, and their willingness to experiment helped give their recordings a character that remains unmistakably their own.
For me, “Dead And Buried” is exactly the sort of record that makes Spooky Season Spins so much fun. It has the atmosphere, the attitude, the strange electronic textures, and just enough campy horror to make it a perfect October selection. There is something irresistible about a record that sounds like the soundtrack to a midnight séance taking place on the dance floor of a particularly disreputable nightclub.
So dim the lights, draw the curtains, and prepare to disturb the neighbors. Alien Sex Fiend are about to wake the dead, and judging by the sound of this record, they have absolutely no intention of letting them rest in peace.
Until the next Spooky Season Spin, keep those turntables spinning and the lights turned down low.

A fine choice. And, yes, Stuff The Turkey for Xmas would be remarkable.
Thanks, I’ll definitely keep “Stuff The Turkey” in mind.
Thank you,Paul. The Halloween weeks have left me completely disoriented-so many obscure songs and such a variety of genres. This week featured a lot of rock and goth rock. Sometimes I need something wild, and this week has really twisted my brain around. In any case, thanks a lot for that!
You’re very welcome, Toxicaudio! I think that’s part of the fun of Spooky Season. You never know what strange sounds might come creeping out of the shadows next! I’ve really enjoyed mixing things up this year, from obscure oddities to some wild goth rock. Halloween gives me the perfect excuse to go a little crazy with the music! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the madness, even if it’s left your brain a little twisted. Thanks so much for coming along for the ride. Happy Halloween!
Long-time lurker and a first time poster here at BTG.
Thank you for another great and wonderfully weird upload from Alien Sex Fiend! I was hoping something from them would appear and you’ve certainly surprised me with this. ASF really could (and should!) be considered one of Halloween’s house bands as such.
What a fun release and upload! I’m listening to this now as I write.
Thank you for all your time and effort to bring us continuously cool releases. Cheers!
~E
Hi Edward! Welcome to the comments section! I’m so glad you decided to come out of the shadows and say hello. I love hearing from longtime visitors, especially when they finally decide to join the conversation. I couldn’t agree more about Alien Sex Fiend being one of Halloween’s house bands! Their wonderfully bizarre sound and twisted sense of humor make them a perfect fit for the season. I’m happy I could surprise you with this one, and even happier that you’re enjoying it. Thank you for your kind words and for sticking with BTG all this time. I really appreciate… Read more »
I was expecting something closer to Mambo Witch, but this is quite catchy! Like you mentioned, this has a danceable beat while being punk around the edges. Between this, Mambo Witch, The Cutter and Skeletons, this is shaping up to be quite the eclectic Halloween party mix! This will really throw the neighbors for a loop. Thank you Paul!
You’re very welcome, Retro Hound! I love that you’re putting together a Halloween party mix from this year’s selections! You’re right, it’s quite a strange combination of sounds, but that’s exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted to keep everyone guessing about what might come next. Alien Sex Fiend certainly knew how to make something dark and bizarre that could still get people moving on the dance floor. I think your neighbors are in for one very interesting Halloween! Thanks for following along and for always bringing such enthusiasm to the comments. Happy Halloween, my friend!
Wild!! Definitely spooky!! This would be right at home on the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack. Not hugely familiar with the band, I enjoyed the writeup giving so much background. The most hilarious part being that the song entered the UK Singles Chart at #92 then climbed to #91 the following week!! For some reason this description very much amused me. That was quite the climb! I didn’t check but I can only assume that it unclimbed the third and final week, before unclimbing right off the chart… alas… Cool selection for Halloween, this was a really interesting listen.… Read more »
Good morning, JP, I must say to you again how much I adore your writing. Your insights, humor, and responses to Paul’s posts bring an extra layer of enjoyment to them. I’m wondering if writing is a big part of your daily life as you do seem to have a knack for it. This entire BTG Family is an exceptional bunch of people, and it’s guys like you that I love reading your “reviews” concerning 12-inch dance discs!! I hope you’re doing much better. I do tend to worry so and I want you to be alright. I’m mending a… Read more »
Aw thanks so much. I do try to write on a regular basis!
Sometimes I don’t have too much to say, other times quite a bit, but I usually like to say something. Your comments are always such a blast too.
It’s been a heck of a couple weeks that’s for sure, doing better, and it sounds like you are too, phew!
May you have a spooktacular weekend (and that goes for everyone else too) 🙂
You’re very welcome, JP! I love the comparison to Return of the Living Dead! This would have fit right in alongside some of those wonderfully twisted punk and horror tracks on that soundtrack. And yes, that spectacular climb from #92 to #91 must have been quite the celebration! You’re absolutely right about what happened next, too. The single eventually unclimbed its way down to #100 before disappearing into the graveyard of forgotten chart entries. At least it went out in appropriately spooky fashion! All kidding aside, I think it’s pretty remarkable that something this strange managed to reach the mainstream… Read more »
This record is a great choice. Without a doubt, ASF are one of my all-time favorite bands; they rank in my Top 10 for gothic music, alongside acts like Clan of Xymox, The Sisters of Mercy, and The Mission. They are, without question, a very peculiar and truly wild band. I was lucky enough to see them in concert, and I had a fantastic time. You never know when (fake) bones or skulls might come flying toward the audience—part of a stage show that channels a horror series, yet which the band cleverly twists into something humorous.
Thank you, Roger24! You’ve got some excellent bands in your Top 10, and Alien Sex Fiend certainly deserve a place alongside those gothic legends. What makes ASF so special is that they never took themselves too seriously, even while creating some wonderfully dark and unsettling music. I’m a little jealous that you had the opportunity to see them live! I can only imagine what an experience that must have been, especially with fake bones and skulls flying into the audience! That’s exactly the kind of twisted humor that sets them apart from so many other bands in the genre. They… Read more »
This is an amazing post, Paul. Although I don’t know much about this musical entity, I am familiar with a little bit of the “Bat Cave” and its history. I also know you’ve shared the band’s “Haunted House” with us too!! As a “terrestrial sex fiend” myself, I love how you’ve picked this track for a “Spooky Season Spin” because it’s quite out there and indeed perfect for Halloween!
You’ve outdone yourself this year with these spook-tacular spins, Paul!! And we do have two days left to see what you have in store for us!!!
Jeff
Thank you so much, Jeff! I had a good laugh at your “terrestrial sex fiend” comment! I also love that you remembered my earlier post of “Haunted House.” You’ve got quite a memory, my friend! Alien Sex Fiend certainly knew how to combine the bizarre with the spooky, and their connection to the legendary Batcave makes them even more interesting. I’ve had a wonderful time putting together this year’s Spooky Season Spins, especially finding some unexpected selections to keep everyone guessing. And you’re right, Halloween isn’t quite here yet, so who knows what else might come crawling out of the… Read more »
Thank you for highlighting another more obscure, yet perfectly fitting Halloween Spooky Season Spin!!! I love that you found this rare remix 12″! I’ve always loved how much this band embraced remixes to deliver danceable grooves for the Batcave dancefloor.
You’re very welcome, Axel F80! I couldn’t agree more! One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Alien Sex Fiend is how they managed to combine their wonderfully bizarre sound with rhythms that could fill a dance floor. Those extended 12-inch versions and dub mixes really gave their music room to breathe and become even stranger. I can only imagine how incredible these tracks must have sounded blasting through the speakers at the Batcave! I thought this one would be a perfect addition to Spooky Season Spins, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your continued support,… Read more »
Excellent Paul! Now hoping for a rip of ‘Stuff The Turkey’ in just under two months time…
Thank you, Ian! You’re already thinking about Christmas, and we haven’t even finished haunting everyone for Halloween! I have to admit, “Stuff The Turkey” would certainly make for a wonderfully twisted holiday selection. Leave it to Alien Sex Fiend to bring a little madness to Christmas! No promises, but I’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks for the laugh and for your continued support, my friend!
Cool, thanks!
Counting down the minutes until “Dig It” by Skinny Puppy makes an appearance. 🙂
You’re very welcome, David! Now there’s a band that would fit right in with Spooky Season Spins! Skinny Puppy certainly knew how to create some wonderfully dark and disturbing sounds, and “Dig It” would be a great choice. I can’t give away what’s lurking around the next corner, but I’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!
A bonus dub by Youth! 🤯
I guess I need to brush up as I don’t remember knowing of his production work that far back!
All time fave Youth moment – the remix he did for Erasure’s Chorus. It should’ve been the album version!!!
I can’t say I got into ASF, but I agree about the indie scene in the ‘80’s, it was awesome!
ING, I thought you might find that Youth credit interesting! It’s amazing how far back some of these connections go, especially when you start exploring the independent music scene of the early ’80s. And what a great choice mentioning his remix of Erasure’s “Chorus”! I know how much you love that track, and I can certainly understand why you’d want that version on the album. That’s one of the wonderful things about 12-inch singles. Sometimes the remix becomes just as important as the original, if not more so! I completely understand Alien Sex Fiend not being your cup of tea.… Read more »
