Burning The Ground Exclusive
I thought I would throw everyone another curveball today! We have lost so many great artists this year, and there are still quite a few I haven’t had the opportunity to pay tribute to here at Burning the Ground. Today, I want to shine the spotlight on one of the most unforgettable entertainers of our time, the legendary Tim Curry, who passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80.
CHART PERFORMANCE (1979–1980)
| Chart | Peak Position | Weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Austria (Ö3 Top 40) | #9 | 6 |
| West Germany (Official Singles Chart) | #26 | 14 |
| US Cash Box Top 100 | #85 | 3 |
| US Billboard Hot 100 | #91 | 3 |
For many of us, Tim Curry will forever be remembered as the outrageous Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Others may remember his memorable performances in “Annie” (1982), “Clue” (1985), “Legend” (1985), or his terrifying portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s “It.” But beyond his remarkable acting career, Curry was also a gifted singer with a powerful voice, a wicked sense of humor, and a theatrical style that made him unlike anyone else.
While his acting career often overshadowed his musical endeavors, Curry released three solo albums for A&M Records: “Read My Lips” (1978), “Fearless” (1979), and “Simplicity” (1981). Each album gave him an opportunity to explore a different side of his musical personality, blending rock, pop, and theatrical flair with his unmistakable vocal delivery.
In 1979, Curry released his second album, “Fearless,” produced by Dick Wagner and Michael Kamen. The album became his most commercially successful, reaching No. 53 on the Billboard 200. Its standout single, “I Do The Rock,” became his biggest U.S. chart hit, peaking at No. 91 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Co-written by Curry and Michael Kamen, “I Do The Rock” is a wonderfully eccentric slice of late-’70s rock filled with sharp humor, clever wordplay, and a dizzying collection of pop culture references. From John Travolta and Farrah Fawcett to Albert Einstein and Friedrich Nietzsche, Curry name-drops his way through the song with the kind of sarcastic wit and theatrical delivery that only he could pull off. Backed by a driving rock arrangement, the song is equal parts satire, attitude, and pure Tim Curry.
Although “I Do The Rock” barely cracked the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 91, and fared only slightly better on the Cash Box Top 100 at No. 85, the record found a much more enthusiastic audience overseas. In 1980, the single climbed all the way to No. 9 in Austria, spending six weeks on the chart. It also reached No. 26 in West Germany, where it enjoyed an impressive 14-week chart run. Not bad for a record that received relatively little attention on American radio!
It’s interesting that European audiences seemed to connect with Curry’s unusual brand of rock more than listeners here in the States. Perhaps his theatrical personality and offbeat sense of humor were simply better appreciated across the Atlantic. Whatever the reason, “I Do The Rock” remains one of those wonderfully strange records that could only have come from an artist like Tim Curry.
For today’s post, I am featuring the 1979 U.S. promotional 12″ single released by A&M Records (SP-17093), titled “Specially Edited Selections From Fearless.” In addition to “I Do The Rock,” the record includes “Paradise Garage (Edited Remix)” and “Charge It (Edit).” This promotional pressing is an interesting piece of Curry’s recording history and a nice collectible for fans who appreciate the more obscure corners of his discography.
While “I Do The Rock” may not have set the American charts on fire, it certainly demonstrated that Curry’s talents extended far beyond the stage and screen. His recordings captured the same fearless personality that made his acting performances so memorable. Whether he was playing a flamboyant mad scientist, a sinister clown, or delivering a tongue-in-cheek rock song, Curry always knew how to command an audience.
With Halloween just around the corner, it also seems especially fitting to remember the man who gave us not one, but two of pop culture’s most unforgettable characters, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise. Few performers could make us laugh, sing along, and scare the daylights out of us quite like Tim Curry.
His passing is another heartbreaking loss in a year that has already taken far too many beloved entertainers. Thankfully, he leaves behind an incredible collection of films, television appearances, stage performances, and recordings that will continue entertaining generations to come.
Rest in peace, Tim Curry (1946–2026). Thank you for the music, the movies, the laughter, and all those wonderfully strange characters that made you one of a kind. You will be greatly missed.
I hope everyone enjoys today’s unexpected selection. If you’ve only known Tim Curry from his acting career, give this one a spin. You might just discover another side of this remarkable entertainer!

Thank you sir
Thank you very much for this one Paul.
Thank you, Paul. Oh man, who could forget Dr. Frank-N-Furter? But! I’m here for the B-side! “Paradise Garage.” This track has total disco vibes. Thanks for reminding me of this song! Have a great weekend, everyone—baby’s got a dream and she can boogie; daddy’s got a groove that’s coming clean.
Toxicaudio, I love that you went straight for the B-side! “Paradise Garage” is such a fun track, and you’re right, those disco vibes are impossible to resist! Tim really knew how to bring his theatrical personality into his music, and this song is a perfect example. I think his musical career often gets overlooked because of his acting, which is a shame because he recorded some great stuff. And I see you couldn’t resist throwing in a few lyrics! Now you’ve got that groove stuck in my head! Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Wishing you and everyone else in… Read more »
Tim Curry was one of a kind. His music career definitely takes a backseat to all his amazing acting roles so this is such a fitting tribute. Thank you so much for highlighting him here Paul! I know most will jump to Dr. Frank-N-Furter (spooky!!!) when they first think of him but I am totally in the Clue camp – his portrayal of Wadsworth the butler (he buttles!) was something else. I don’t think any other actor could have pulled that off. Legendary. The lyrical delivery on I Do the Rock is just so unexpected and so perfect. A totally… Read more »
JP, I love that you’re in the Clue camp! Tim was absolutely brilliant as Wadsworth, and you’re right, I can’t imagine anyone else pulling off that role quite the way he did. His comic timing, facial expressions, and sheer energy were incredible. And “he buttles!” still makes me laugh! That’s one of those movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of. I also agree with you about his vocal delivery on “I Do The Rock.” He had a way of making even the strangest lyrics sound completely natural. I’m really glad I could bring this one… Read more »
Fantastic!! You’re absolutely right Paul, this could only come from Tim Curry. What a performer! This deserves to be right up there with Do You Think I’m Sexy?, which itself was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I’m actually floored, as Tim Curry had so much more to offer than the acting roles he made famous (and deservedly so). He certainly left his mark. Big thank you Paul for this wildly entertaining curveball! Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Retro Hound, I love that you brought up Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” I hadn’t really thought about the two songs together, but you’re absolutely right! Both have that playful, tongue-in-cheek attitude that makes them so much fun. Tim had such an incredible presence, and I think a lot of people never realized just how talented he was as a recording artist. It’s a shame his music was so overshadowed by his acting, although what an amazing acting career he had! That’s one of the reasons I love throwing these little curveballs at everyone. Sometimes the most unexpected… Read more »
I LOVED this album and have the original vinyl somewhere. It may sound completely crazy, but when he passed recently, I(as a medium–take it with a grain of salt, but I believe it) saw him around me quite a lot in spirit singing I Do The Rock and dancing like a person who had been in a wheelchair for years and was thrilled not to be there now and he looked young and outrageous. Good for him, wherever he may be–I can still probably sing every word of this album, if I try–thanks for reminding us.
Donnalee, thank you so much for sharing such a personal and touching experience. I don’t think it sounds crazy at all. We all have our own beliefs and ways of connecting with those who have passed, and I respect that. I have to say, the image of Tim looking young and outrageous, singing and dancing without a care in the world, really made me smile. If there’s one person who would make a grand entrance into the afterlife, it would certainly be Tim Curry! I also love that you still remember the words to the entire album after all these… Read more »
Dick Wagner? Michael Kamen? Wow! Don’t remember it, but very much reminds me of Lou Reed! thanks! Tim Curry, respect!!
Raymond, you have a good ear! Dick Wagner actually worked with Lou Reed on his “Berlin” album and played guitar on the classic “Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal” live album, so there’s a connection there! I can definitely hear a bit of Lou Reed in Tim’s vocal delivery, too. Curry had such a unique style, and I think his music deserves more attention than it gets. Glad I could introduce you to this one, my friend! Thanks for listening!
This wasn’t a hit? It used to be played quite a lot on my local radio stations in New Orleans. I knew it wasn’t a Top 10 but — given how often I heard it — I would have sworn it was Top 40. Thank you for sharing this and bringing back good memories.
VanceMan, isn’t it funny how a song can get so much airplay in one city and barely make a dent in the national charts? “I Do The Rock” only reached #91 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it sounds like New Orleans radio really took a liking to it! That’s one of the things I miss about radio back then. Local stations weren’t always playing the same records as everyone else. I’m glad this one brought back some good memories for you. Thanks for sharing them!
Thank you for this absolute gem. I thought this song did chart in Canada. One of the greatest under rated vocalist EVER.
Jeffery, I couldn’t agree more! Tim had such a powerful, distinctive voice, and I always felt his music deserved far more attention. You may be right about Canada. I did find that the single was released there in 1979, but I haven’t been able to confirm a Canadian chart position. It’s certainly possible! Thank you for the kind words, my friend. I’m glad I could give Tim a little musical spotlight today. He was truly one of a kind!
Thank you for this! I was just talking with my wife about this song, because they would play the video for this (and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”) before screenings of Rocky Horror in my area, but she doesn’t know it.
Tim Curry was such a legend, they didn’t dare make a movie called Legend without casting him in it. 🙂
David, I love that they played the video before screenings of Rocky Horror! What a great way to introduce audiences to Tim’s music. And I bet there were quite a few people who discovered “I Do The Rock” that way. I got a good laugh out of your comment about “Legend”! You might be onto something there! Tim was absolutely unforgettable as Darkness in that film. He could completely disappear into a character and still make it unmistakably his own. Thanks for sharing that wonderful memory, my friend!
I am so sorry I have missed much this week. Besides having surgery on my wrist, I have had computer network issues. Also, my arms are a bit sore from the four vaccinations I’ve received too. I can’t really type great, so I’ll keep this one short. Thanks so much, Paul, for this song! It has always been a favorite of mine after hearing it on a college radio station. I picked it up on a Rhino compilation (I think) back in the eighties. This song was my absolute favorite! I hope you and the BTG Family have a rocking… Read more »
Jeff, my friend, you have really been through it this week! I’m so sorry to hear about your wrist surgery, and then having to deal with computer problems and four vaccinations on top of that. That’s enough to wear anybody out! Please don’t ever feel like you need to apologize for missing a few days here. You’re part of the BTG family, and we’ll always be here when you’re ready to come back. I’m just happy you stopped by, especially when typing isn’t easy for you right now. I love that this song has been a favorite of yours since… Read more »
Wishing you a speedy recovery Jeff! When you’re not here you are sorely missed. But, you also need to take care of yourself. Rest up and see you next week!
Thanks so much, Retro Hound. I really appreciate you as a person and friend.
Jeff
Oh no Jeff! I thought something was up when you hadn’t posted. Sounds like a trifecta of not very good things… although wrist surgery makes network problems sound pretty great in comparison!
Hoping that you heal quickly and wishing you all the best! Have a great (or at least pretty not terrible) weekend 🙂
Hey JP,
Yes, things are a bit rough right now. At least BTG is keeping my spirits up right now. Thanks for your care and concern. You’re a wonderful person JP!
Jeff
Jeff, I was just thinking yesterday that you hadn’t posted anything this week. It’s so nice to hear from you again. Your posts are a real asset here and always bring a smile to one’s face. In any case, I wish you a speedy recovery and a relaxing weekend.
Toxicaudio, you and this wonderful group of individuals always make me smile! I so enjoy connecting with others who share the passion for wonderful dance records! Paul has made a very special place here in cyberspace. Especially with awesome folks like you sharing their thoughts and personalities with the world!
